Votto back, but not in lineup

By Hal McCoy

Staff Writer

Sunday, August 17, 2008

CINCINNATI — Joey Votto was in uniform Saturday, Aug. 16, returning from bereavement leave, but in no mood to play baseball, to smile or to chat about his ordeal.

Reds manager Dusty Baker understands fully. He had hoped to keep Votto on bereavement for 10 days, "But we had to activate him because the rules say only seven days for bereavement, and that time is up."

Baker did not put Votto in the lineup Saturday night, nor does he plan to start him today, and said, "I was hoping to let him workout Saturday and today and with an off day Monday, he would be ready Tuesday. But the rules say he gets only a week, so he had to be on the roster."

To make room for Votto, the Reds had to return infielder Adam Rosales back to Class AAA Louisville, but not before he got his first major-league hit.

Asked if Votto might pinch hit, Baker said, "I don't know if he'll be emotionally and physically ready. He hasn't hit. But, we'll see."

Javier Valentin, playing most of the time during Votto's absence, started Saturday and will start this afternoon.

Then put him on the DL......and let Rosales at least start a few. Is it too much to ask for someone to ask Baker...why he never started 1 game?

Not trying to sound cold to JV at all...but his heart is not in it....why force him to be here?

I think having the reds pre-game show with STL highlights and another lovefest over pujols.....wow...he is good? really? i did not know that....thanks ernie and bert.........is really put me in a foul mood.....that and fracturing my thumb in 6 places during a company softball game. :thumbdown

Dickerson K's, end of 2.

Dickerson is going to swing and miss his fair share of the time, but it sure is nice to see a leadoff hitter with a sense of the strike zone.

In 2007 at AAA Dickerson fanned 131 times and had 52 walks in 354 at bats. Also last year, 2007, he had 31 Ks and 7 BBs in 114 AA at bats.

The year before, 2006, he had 162 Ks and 59 BBs.

This year his minor league numbers were 102 Ks and 54 walks.

From what I've seen, Dickerson is a great athlete with tremendous speed, whose hitting against righties seems to be major league level. I think he can definitely help the Reds as a platoon centerfielder or, if not, a fourth outfielder.

But I think it's premature to annoint him the centerfielder of the future. His "sense of the strike zone" hasn't been great in the minors and the Reds need to watch closely during this extended trial.

RedsManRick

A low batting average coupled with a high IsoD is evidence that a guy has good plate discipline but problems making contact. You cannot sustain the walk rates Dickerson has sustained with poor plate discipline -- period. Like Dunn, he strikes out because he works deep counts and swings and misses a fair bit.

See...even Pujols hustles...:)

Good players tend to. I know that probably rubs some the wrong way....

(and before this turns into a Dunn shouting match, Dunn hustled; others, well, others didn't).

David Weathers is terrible. He retired the first two and then allows a single, walk, RBI single.

Weathers is pitching well beyond his physical capabilities. If anything, he's been a nice surprise this season.

Guys with about 15 times his stuff (Affeldt) are actually worse pitchers, IMO.

They are a wrecking crew. There's not an NL team with a chance to stop them in the postseason. In fact, it's the Cubs WS to lose.

Bruce K's on ball 4. He's 2-for-4 today with a walk and the times he made outs he worked the count to 3-2.

Cordero's earning his black eyes. Dusty's been taking cheap shots before a single pitch was thrown.

Was at the game today.

Edison pitched very nicely, and it was good to see him not lose his mind after trading brush-backs with Loshe and hitting Lopez.

He also undressed Ankiel and Glaus during that tough spot (forget the inning...bases loaded and only 1 out). Serriously. He made them look silly. They are a couple of very tallented hitters and he just made them look dumb.

I am not pimping for Javy as a long-term solution to anything (except an endorsement deal from Old Country Buffett), but he ran out one infield hit and made a nice diving grab today. The diving grab was a real rocket-shot.

We actually stuck around for the game and paid attention to it. With a lot of these miserable performances we stick around through the scoreboard stumper and then bolt.
