I bet it is a really sloppy game with a lot of turnovers. After last game, Painter probably won't even start anymore. That to me is insane. How can a guy have a fairly good Senior season and then come back for a fifth year and play this terribly. Purdue did lose Jaycen Taylor the RB, but how can just one RB, especially when they have the returning starter anyways in Kory Sheets, affect the passing game that much. Painter has to be hurt or on drugs, hallucigens probably.

I'm sure most of you know, but I keep seeing "Florida @ Georgia."
I hope this isn't influencing your picks. As always the game's being played in Jacksonville.
Guess who I've got.
Some talking head on (might have even been Craig James, but I don't know) on the UC - OSF game on Thursday night was trying to make the case that a 1 loss SEC team should get the nod over an undefeated Penn State team for the national championship game.

I could live with that if that 1-loss SEC team wears Orange and Blue. Although, you understand, I may be a little bit biased. ;)
Edit:

Reads like a smart guy.
Could Penn State get through an entire SEC East schedule without a single loss? With only one?

The SEC isn't even all that good this year. Even the top teams like Georgia and Florida have obvious flaws. In the past years, the talk of SEC dominance was deserved. This year, I think it's a myth

Come on now, you know Penn State would go 2-6 in the SEC :)
In all seriousness, VANDERBILT was being talked about as a threat to win the SEC this year. Shows you the strength of that conference this year. Auburn is awful, Tennessee is awful, Miss is average at best, Miss. St isn't any good, Kentucky isn't any good, Alabama has played a cream puff schedule, Georgia's D hasn't been any good and their O-line is decimated, and Florida has been downright schizo. Color me unimpressed.

I agree with you, cin. I do think the SEC is down a bit this season.
Schizophrenic is a great word to describe the SEC this season. It's simply very difficult to get a really good 'read' on the historically "top teams" of the conference.
I'm really looking forward to the bowls this season. Should be very interesting.

Unfortunately, I think that the Big 10 is also down this year. Wisconsin has been a huge disappointment and I don't think Minnesota or Michigan State really deserve to be ranked.
Unfortunately, I think that the Big 10 is also down this year. Wisconsin has been a huge disappointment and I don't think Minnesota or Michigan State really deserve to be ranked.
The Big Ten has been in a downward spiral for several years now, but I think things might finally be starting to change. D'Anotonio is a really coach and will bring that program back to being a top 20 team consistently. Brewster is doing some good things up here in Minnesota and some of the other doormats are at least becoming somewhat respectable. But they still have a ways to go to get to where they used to be.
When the Big Ten's top 3 programs, OSU, Michigan, and Penn State, are at their historically normal strength, the top 3 of the Big Ten is as good as any conference out there. The whole "conference superiority" argument was never about top team, but OSU's struggles in the past 3 big OOC games they've played has led some to turn it into that. But if you look at the sum total of the data, it's simply not the case (i.e. Michigan pretty much handling a good Florida team last year). The SEC's strength has come from quantity of good teams, not that their top ones were so much better than the other conferences top teams. In recent years, they've had several good teams as opposed to just a couple. And that makes it tougher to get through their schedule. But their top teams generally are pretty comparable with other good conference's top teams. It's in the next tier where they've been better.
At the same time, teams from the SEC get conference credit to make them perceived to be better than they actually are (see Kentucky the last couple of years). With the exception of that one undefeated season, Auburn has been incredibly over-rated for years. Tennessee hasn't been a legitimately top tier team in years. Until this season, Alabama has been very pedestrian for years. South Carolina has never been that good, but the name of their coach gives them the benefit of the doubt. Ole Miss had basically one good season. Vanderbilt is not the pushover they used to be, but they're still not a strong program. Arkansas had a good couple of years with McFadden and Jones, but other than that, average is a good way to describe their program.
But the top programs are really great programs. It's the next tier that distinguishes them. And I think Penn State this year could play with any team in the SEC. And if they get a chance to play one of them, I think it will be areally good game, with PSU haven't a good chance to win. OSU is the team that's struggled with the SEC (and as we've seen, it's not just the SEC), but that has not trickled down to the rest of the conference. It's an OSU problem, not a Big Ten problem.

You're right, it should be a good bowl season. It's unfortunate that Michigan is having a historically bad season. If Michigan was anywhere near their traditional status, the Big 10 would be looking a whole hell of a lot better right now.

By the way, did anyone else see the Hook N' Ladder play that Purdue used to beat Michigan? It was a beauty.
Also, a big comeback win for Dantonio and his program. Down 24-13 in the 4th, rallied to win it with a 44 yard fg with a few seconds left in the game

Michigan could be in trouble the next several years. D'Antonio is winning the in-state recruiting battle and that's never really happened before. I don't think Rich Rod is long for Ann Arbor.

I agree with you completely on this. When Rich Rod was initially hired, my immediate thought was "UH-OH!" as a Buckeye fan. But I'll tell you what, it's going to be awfully hard to recover from a potential 2-10 season. Michigan fans could handle a rebuilding year, anywhere from 5-7 wins. But we're talking historically bad now, and that's a whole other level. He won't be canned after the year, but if he has another non-winning season next year, LOOK OUT

As somewhat of a Michigan fan (hey, I have a diploma from there, I can't really help it), my first reaction was, "Huh?". He just seemed like an odd fit for the Ann Arobr / University culture there. Nothing about him said he would fit in in Ann Arbor. I also thought the change from their system to his system would be too difficult to achieve in a short period of time. And I really thought this season would be ugly. Amongst my fellow alums, I predicted 5-7 before the season started. They thought I was crazy. Looks like they were right, but in th wrong way.
I don't think he lasts 3 years there. They should have hired Brian Kelly or Skip Holtz.

Yeah Rich Rod's spread is really a 180 from what they did in the past, and I think what hurt him the most is that he is trying to implement his system with Lloyd Carr's recruits which were most likely designed for Lloyd Carr's system. I know that positions like fullback, offensive line, and WR probably wouldn't change much, but you need a pass catching running back and a slightly more mobile quarterback, and steven threet is no Pat White or Terrell Pryor. I also find it interesting that a lot of other coaches in the Big Ten did not take kindly to Rodriguez and the mild mannered Joe Tiller even called him a snake or something because of his reruiting techniques.
On a side note, rodriguez was at my high school last year in Michigan watching Mike Martin, one of their DL recruits who is getting some playing time this year, wrestle. He seemed kinda like a D Bag when I saw him and my dad said that he was being a dick to people asking for autographs, not that this matters when talking about what UM will do on the field, but it gives me another reason to not like Michigan, sorry MWM.
No worries. I'm a Buckeye fan first and foremost. Yes, I know. That's sacrilege and most of the Buckeye fanbase would disown me. But I started watching the Buckeyes in 1984 and have followed them religiously since. I went to MIchigan because they had one of the top grad programs in the country in my field. And I absolutely loved my time there. It's a fantastic school and a great town. I could no longer hate them. By the time I left I found myself actually rooting for them except that one Saturday in November.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't really support any big college football teams, but my parents went to purdue and my best friend is a tOSU fan so I support them more than anyone else. I'm at Johns Hopkins and the last time their football team mattered was...never. That is quite the dilemma you have, but I think UofM as a school is a great place and you certainly did the right thing by going to school there.

What's funny is that I had friends, and even one family member, be completely genuine in their disbelief that I even appplied to that school up north. I love sports and all, but they definitely aren't so important to me that they would ever factor in an important decision in my life.

I always watch the opposing team leaving the field when the crowd rushes the field like that and am amazed at the restraint of those players. The urge to shove those people out of your way has got to be nearly overpowering.

Yeah, that was certainly a bad coaching decision. TTU was up by 5 after scoring so a field goal wouldn't have beat them anyway, and I doubt that Texas was going to miss the extra point (if they attempted it). Reward outweighs risk in this situation by a lot, not to mention that TTU was kicking off from the 7 yard line, which probably made a touchdown more likely than if they were kicking from the thirty.

OSU should win next week at Evanston. When you look at these two teams on paper, they are pretty much even. They both do a good job at stopping the run. OSU has the #1 pass defense, while the WCs are #9. But OSU's passing game is pretty poor right now, so I expect the WCs to follow the PSU game plan and stack the line and make Pryor beat them with the pass. I don't expect a high scoring affair.

Just bought my OSU vs. Illinois tickets for the game in Champaign in two weeks. On the bright side of OSU losing to PSU, the prices for tickets have tanked the last couple weeks. I got some 10th row seats up from the endzone for only $50 each ($60 with Stubhub fees). Couple that with a UI friend and a free place to stay and it should be a good weekend trip.

I will be in Northwestern this weekend. Unfortunately the NW ticket holders raise the prices quite a bit for the OSU game. I think I paid around $80/ticket a week or two after the USC loss.

They still were at the time I posted the schedule. :p:
Updates:
OSU's Ray Small has been suspended for Saturday's game due to a violation of team rules.
Also, NW'erns RB Conteh is out due to a knee injury. Sutton is already out for a wrist injury.
Good lord, college football refs are so gullible. Russell was actually in bounds when he hit Kafka on that first drive after half time, and he gets flagged for a late hit just because the QB went flying out of bounds. That's throwing a flag out of emotion rather than actually seeing a foul.
Terrelle Pryor - WOW!!!!!
That drive at the end of the 3rd quarter was unreal. Two plays very few QBs in the country could make, he makes to recapture momentum from Northwestern.
Hmmmm..... a little confused by the fake punt and deep throw on this past drive with a 3 TD lead with 8 minutes to go. That's very un-Tressel like and not sure I like it.
The Gophers laid one huge egg vs the Wolverines today. Geez!
And W. Michigan beat Illinois 23-17.
Well, PSU blew their chance today. Their offense has not looked as good the last few games and thy've been playing not to lose starting with the OSU game. Too bad, I think they're a legitimately top tier team this year, but their coaching staff decided to go into conservative mode once a national title shot was in view. I swear, Big Ten offensive coaching is just irritating to watch. PSU has a lot of talent on offense, yet they choose to play like it's still 1980. When they were finally willing to break tendencies early in the year, look what happened. So why they chose to go back into typical PSU offense mode the last few games is beyond me.
Looks like Florida now has the inside track at the national title game as I just don't see Texas Tech going undefeated. That leaves Alabama and Florida playing for the shot to go in the SEC title game. I hope they wind up playing USC. That would be a good game. Given a month to prepare and on a neutral site, I don't think anyone can play with the Trojans. But they might not even get the chance. Sad state of affairs without a playoff system.

I don't see how you can say that. They had a hiccup against Oregon State. It happens. Florida had a hiccup against Ole Miss. USC has been pretty dominant in most of their wins. It's my opinion, but I don't think there's any team that could beat them on a big stage with time to prepare.

But they've beaten exactly zero good teams since September (and that wasn't the same Ohio State team that Penn State beat), and they won't play any more. Florida will have beaten Georgia, LSU, Florida State, and obviously Bama. Teams do slip up, but it's obvious Florida has played and beaten much better competition. If they win out, there's no doubt they belong in the title game, as much as that pains me to say.
It sucks for USC, but the PAC 10 is horrendous. Worse than any Big Ten hater would accuse the Big Ten of being.
As long as the Big 12 champ comes from the South, I think that team vs the SEC champ is the logical and most fair choice. If Mizzou pulls an upset and wins the Big 12, then USC slides in.

Well, that all might be true. Some people go on the resume, others go on who they think is the better team. I go on the latter. And for the record, it might be tough to beat all of them, but LSU is really not that great this year. I'm surprised Alabama had such a hard time with them. And Georgia is showing that, much like OSU, they weren't deserving of the hype this year. And beating Florida State isn't saying all that much these days. If Florida wins out, I'd have no problem putting themin the national championship game. They would deserve it. But I believe USC is the better team and would win a game on a neutral field with time to prepare. Beck, I think that would be a good national title game. But Oklahoma and Texas are both one loss teams they'd have to leap frog. And USC doesn't play anyone the rest of the season, so I just don't see them getting the chance. It totally blows that we have to sit here and talk about resume and style points. The SEC is generally the best conference, but this year the Big 12 is stronger, IMO. I think the SEC is a little over-rated this year. So if we're talking one loss teams, I think Oklahoma would have every bit as much claim to the national title game as Florida. Heck, between Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Alabama, and USC, I don't see a team that's really good enough to claim to be better than the others. I think they're all pretty close. It's a shame that multiple one loss teams will have have to sit out while one gets the chance. It's a crying shame.

Yeah, I think the Big 12 is the best overall league, too.
I think Florida is the best team right now, and don't imagine they'll be given much trouble by Bama. Bama is really good, but I don't think they can score the 30 points necessary to beat the Gators.
USC may well be the best team, and even though it's not their fault, the schedule really hurts them. I don't like the BCS, but it is the system we use. I just can't in good faith put USC over 1 loss teams from the top two leagues.
How good would an 8 team playoff look this year?

Well, that all might be true. Some people go on the resume, others go on who they think is the better team. I go on the latter.
Well here is what I have to say about resume. If you go solely on who you think is the best team, you are not rewarding teams for their accomplishments. In my opinion, the 2004 Buckeyes who beat Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl were good enough to win a BCS bowl (given Troy Smith's eligibility status when bowls were determined). Can I seriously put a 7-5 team in a BCS bowl? Heck no!
WEEK 11 WINNERS - the state of Michigan rears it's ugly head!

As we head down the stretch here, I wanted to point out a few interesting things real quick.
1. If MSU beats Penn State, the Buckeyes and the Spartans likely finish tied with one loss apiece, giving OSU the automatic Rose Bowl berth thanks to the win over the Spartans. After the PSU loss, it appeared as if all hope was dead. Nice to know there's still a chance.
2. Everyone nationally seems to be ignoring the fact that if Oregon State wins out, they win the Pac 10. Where would USC fit in here? The Beavers would get the Rose Bowl bid, it's unlikely USC can jump so many teams for a title game berth due to their weak schedule, so where do they go? You'd have to think they'd still get a BCS bid, but where to?

Which is weird, because all I heard from friends and the media after the PSU loss was that MSU would go over PSU or OSU since they did not play any FCS opponents this year. But I went to the Big 10 website and looked up the rules to determine the Big 10 BCS rep and here they are:
1) An ineligible team shall not be considered in the standings for determination of the conference representative.
2) If there is a tie for the championship, the winner of the game between these two teams shall represent the conference.
3) If there is still a tie for the championship, or if the tied teams did not play each other, the team that played more games against Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams shall be eliminated.
4) If there is still a tie, or if the tied teams did not play each other, or if both teams played the same number of games against an FCS team(s), the representative shall be determined on the percentage basis of all games played.
5) If there is still a tie, the most recent team earning BCS automatic selection shall be eliminated.
I'm not really sure where people were getting that from since it's clearly behind head to head results in the pecking order.

Your friends would have been correct if it would have been a 3 way tie. In that case, OSU would have beat MSU, MSU would have beat Penn State, and Penn State would have beat OSU. So, Michigan State gets the nod in that scenario. But if OSU and MSU both win out, they have 1 conference loss, and OSU beat MSU, so they get the nod. Penn State's loss to Iowa pretty much killed any chances of there being a 3 way tie.

That may not be necessarily true. One could also say that MSU beat PSU (who beat OSU). ;)
I had an OSU alumni tell me yesterday that if it comes down between OSU and MSU, and who goes to the Rose Bowl, MSU would get the nod because there is a provision in the Big 10 guidelines concerning the number of opponents that were Division 1-AA. OSU had 1 (Youngstown State), MSU played none.
Now whether that is true or not I don't know.

Now whether that is true or not I don't know.
I was under the impression that if OSU and MSU finished tied, OSU would get the nod due to their win. Perhaps I'm wrong there, I'll try and look that up

That would be to tie braeker if OSU and Sparty had not played. but since they did play, head2head is the tie breaker. But we still have a few weeks of action. I'm roting for Sparty, that is for sure!!

I don't believe that MSU will beat Penn State though. I believe that PSU will come out fired up because they just got beat and blow out MSU, but they could also lay an egg. Other things equal, PSU is still the better team.
Maybe its because I haven't seen PSU enough this year but they do not impress me one bit. They did beat OSU but I chalk that up to having a Freshman QB making Freshman QB mistakes. Nothing jumps off the board about PSU to me. I am glad they didn't run the table because they would have been destroyed by good competition.

That was the case before Penn State lost to Iowa. Now we don't have to talk about it anymore unless OSU and Penn State both lose this weekend and then both turn around and win their last games...not too likely but who knows.
If both OSU and PSU win out then PSU goes to the Rose Bowl and OSU goes to either the Cap One or at large for the BCS depending on Oregon State and Utah/Boise State
If both OSU and MSU win out then OSU goes to the Rose Bowl.

This is true. I looked it up on the Big 10 site because I heard the same thing regarding 1-AA schools.
First tie breaker is head to head.
Second tie breaker is FCS schools.

Chris Wells is special. He's easily the best RB in the country and were it not for the games he missed, he should be right in the mix for the Heisman. He's the best OSU RB I've ever seen.
And Terrelle Pryor is going to be special as well. What he's doing as a true freshman is just incredible.

And Terrelle Pryor is going to be special as well. What he's doing as a true freshman is just incredible.
The most impressive thing to me is how much teams are respecting his ability to pass, when he only throws 10-15 a game. Imagine next year and beyond when he throws 25 times to what will likely be better receivers. Then add his running ability and the ability of Herron and incoming freshman Jamal Berry...OSU is going to have a top tier offense in all likelihood, especially if Posey and Thomas develop into the real deal.
His poise in the pocket is outstanding, and when he does run, he just glides past pretty speedy defenders. Tressel is barely tapping his true potential. When they go spread almost full time next year, we will get to see Pryor in his true comfort zone.

Assuming that Penn State beats MSU (highly likely) and Oregon State wins out (fairly likely), Ohio State is the first team left out of the BCS games.
SEC: 2 (Alabama and SEC #2)
Big 12: 2 (Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma: Pick 2)
Pac 10: 2 (Oregon State and USC)
Big 10: 1 (Penn State)
ACC: 1 (Probably Miami)
Big East: 1 (Cincy or Pitt)
Non-BCS: 1 (Probably Utah)

What is going to possibly shake the BCS up even more is not only possibly a couple key games coming up this weekend; but also conference championship games, such as in the SEC and Big 12.
The way it stands now, in the SEC you've got Alabama vs Florida. In the Big 12, Missouri vs Texas Tech.
Could be interesting.
I'd like to see the Big 10 add (entice) another team (and a quality team too), split, and add a championship game.

Northwestern. They are the only private school in the conference, so it would make sense to me to kick them out. They have different rules for their sports because the board of directors is big into Title IX. For example every other big ten team can keep 35 players on the baseball team while Northwestern can only keep 29. I went on an unofficial visit to Northwestern and spoke to the baseball coach and he said that the baseball team really couldn't compete with the rest of the big ten with the regulations put on them. They aren't much better at other sports either, so I think it would be to their benefit to move to another conference so they aren't the doormat of the big ten every year. They have had some recent success at football, but have historically not been very good.
