Reds defense making Volquez look bad yet again. Worst defense in MLB.

The entire "official scorer" business is just plain annoying. It's almost entirely political, meant to protect certain guys' stats rather than reflect the reality of what happened on a given play.

No errors so Volquez gets the earned runs while the fielders don't get any errors.

Poor base running and the Reds escape.

Where was Zito at to cover 3B?

Looking at it again - it wasn't Zito's fault since he was running toward 1B. Looks like the catcher should have ran down the line to cover 3B.

5 RBIs for Edwin... tied for most in a game this year. Done twice before tonight...

(1) Votto, Apr. 17 @ Cubs.
(2) Bako, June 9 @ Marlins.

Each time it has happened... Volquez was the REDS starter.

Chris was always known for the strikeouts in Louisville. I don't think that will change much now that he's here in Cincinnati. Still, 1 in 3 is a bit much.

As announcers point out, terrible pitch by Affeldt to Aurilia. This could be another adventure. Coco hasn't pitched in awhile, hope he has something in the tank tonight because he's likely to get a chance.

Why am I still watching these games?

What is there left to say? I know my season of posts has become as weak as the Reds offense. Last year I found statistical research far more interesting. This year I just can't bring myself to do it. I remember being interested in lineup construction but this year any thoughts would have just been killed by the fact that CF leads off, SS is second, etc. Hopefully energy will come back.

I just saw Dickerson's HR over on Gameday. Does his swing always look that nice? Compact but smooth, lefty grace. Good pop

Many would say that attempted steal was good baseball, but the pitcher wasn't throwing strikes and then Votto singles. It seems like a waste of an out.

Point well taken. This team is simply no fun to watch and discussion has pretty much dried up for now.

And it's a long time until Spring Training,

Dickerson seems to wait on the ball quite well. He has good bat speed and swings at the last possible moment. Generates excellent power that way.

He's very productive so far when he makes contact.

But of all these young hitters, Votto is the one who impresses me most. He makes consistent good contact. Bruce overmatched right now.

Volquez had trouble keeping SF off base (allowed 8 hits in 6 innings), but some shoddy defense by Phillips and Bruce led to 4 runs in the 4th after we had gone out in front by 4-0 on Edwin's grand slam. All of the 6 runs allowed by Edisonson were earned since no errors were given by the official scorer.

Both teams' defense has been less than desirable, though.

Riverside got crushed. That's the last time I'll watch them play this year.

Official scorers suck. This is two straight starts Volquez has been screwed by the official scorer. You would think clueless official scorer would favor Volquez in this case.

Volquez's ERA is now up to 3.04. It should be in the 2.75ish area if not for some incompetent official scoring in Volquez's last two starts. Seriously, I wish MLB would take care of that stuff instead of letting clueless homers make those decisions.
