Keppinger strikes again. A routine groundball turned into a single.

OnBaseMachine

And now Jolbert Cabrera botches an easy double play. Instead it's only a fielders choice.

Edwin takes a Rudy to bring up Bruce with the bases full; Cain walks him, forcing in run #3.

08-31-2008, 01:26 PM
Bruce walks in a run. Reds should have about 19 runs in this game.

Must say, watching the team this week, Joey Votto is a terrific young hitter. So consistent, still very young. Hope they can find a spot for Votto going forward, even when Alonso comes up.

Doc. Scott

Then Votto gets caught stealing as the Reds give away another out.

Doc. Scott

Yeah the Reds taking him off the DL too soon didn't have any affect on him what so ever.

There's a reason why Kepp has been a journeyman player. You're seeing it here. Play him in spots and he can look awesome, but play him everyday, and you get a guy who is going to hit .260 with no pop and little defensive powress.

The injury IMHO didn't change any of that. He is what his is--a backup.

Doc. Scott
08-31-2008, 02:07 PM
I don't think Keppinger's injury had anything to do with his subsequent slump at the plate. He's just regressed towards the mean. The real Jeff is somewhere between the Boggsian exploits of 2007 and this year's Oesterisms.

It might have further hurt his already-poor range afield, but since the guy just can't play shortstop in the major leagues I think you'd all be complaining about it regardless of whether or not he'd broken his kneecap.

I hope the Reds keep him and use him as a utility player and pinch-hitter in 2009; he could have a lot of use filling it at six positions. And he'll hit much better than many players of that ilk.

Don't look know, but with that scorless inning, Arroyo has his ERA down to 4.97.

Who would have thought he could ever have done that.

It was a 6.52 on June 24.

Since that time he has been (assumimg win today), 9-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 starts, averaging about 6 2/3rds inning per start, and includes 9 quality starts.

Of course, that's always true. When you go to the Big Lots to get a bargain, you usually get something that breaks after two uses. That's a lesson that most of our recent GM's didn't understand because we have a team full of Keppingers, Freels, Hoppers, Bakos, and Pattersons with a Cabrerra, Hariston, and a Andy Phillips thrown in on occasion.

Sometimes these acquitions work out for a brief time and sometimes they do not. That's the gamble.

Well considering he's at 116 pitches, and would likely need about 140-150 piches to get the complate game, I'd guess no.

And considering thet he was pinch hit for already, and is out of the game, I think that probably clinches it.

SWEEP? If it happens, it will be the 5th sweep of the year for the mighty REDS (minimum three game series). All of them at home...
(1) May 12-14 vs. Marlins.
(2) May 16-18 vs. Indians.
(3) May 30-June 1 vs. Braves
(4) July 3-6 vs. Nationals.

The last time the REDS swept a team on the road was July 16-18, 2007 (Braves). They have played 31 series' (min. 3 games) on the road since that sweep... and were swept by the opposing team 6 times.

The way I hear it, the Reds will release Patterson and Majewski when the following occurs:

I really like the 'stuff' that Affeldt brings to the mound. If he could be more consistent with his location he'd be close to unhittable.

I'd love to bring him back next year but with one caveat---the Reds would have to be convinced that they have a chance to win the division. Otherwise, Jerremy is way too expensive.

Is this young nucleus starting to mesh?

Certainly was a good series. I'd love to see some more of the young ones in the bullpen.

Can Arroyo win 16 or 17 this year, is there still time?

He has 5 more starts, giving him a potential 18-10 record. If two of those 5 are losses or no decisions, he could be 16-12 or 16-10. Chances are, he'll finish with 15 wins. Not bad.

That would make him very attractive in winter trade talks.

Can’t say much for the competition, but I don’t care this time, it’s our turn for something to work out good regardless.
