From the Gameday preview

MILWAUKEE -- Reds manager Dusty Baker has seven extra players at his disposal and a tightrope to walk when determining how he'll use those September callups.
Of Cincinnati's final 17 games, 16 are against teams that have a fighting chance at making the playoffs. That might prevent Baker from fielding a lineup of fresh faces with little big league experience.

"I'll use them in spots and try to get them a start if I can," Baker said. "But for the integrity of the races and the team, you have to go with your best lineup. Everyone we're playing still has a chance for something. I'll probably play them a lot more than I played when I came up. Some will pinch-hit. Some will pinch-run. We'll see what they can do in the clutch. It depends. I told them all to be ready to play."

Infielders Paul Janish, Danny Richar, Adam Rosales and pitchers Danny Herrera, Jon Adkins, Adam Pettyjohn and Josh Roenicke were officially called up Tuesday from Triple-A Louisville. Adkins faced two batters in the 10th inning on Tuesday and was the winner in a 5-4 victory in 11 innings over Milwaukee.

Janish played 31 games for the Reds during his earlier callup. Rosales and Herrera got brief big league exposure in their previous promotions. Richar, acquired in the Ken Griffey Jr. trade, played 57 games for the White Sox last season. Adkins and Pettyjohn are 31-year-old veterans. Only Roenicke has never been in the Majors before.

"This is an invaluable experience," Baker said of the younger September callups. "Hopefully in the near future, we'll be in the situation on the other side of the coin. You have to feel excitement but control adrenaline and have the coolness of mind to handle different situations and pressures. People say, 'I know I can do it,' but until you're in that situation, you just don't know."

Pitching matchup
CIN: RHP Bronson Arroyo (14-10, 4.84 ERA)
In his last start on Friday, Arroyo struck out the first three Cubs he faced on 10 pitches before getting a big lead and cruising thereafter for his 14th win of the season. The 31-year-old right-hander went 6 1/3 innings and gave up just one run on four hits, striking out six, in the Reds' big win over the Cubs. A high pitch count drove Arroyo out early, as he threw a season-high 122 pitches before being chased midway through the seventh inning. The right-hander has faced the Brewers twice this season, going 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 11 2/3 innings. Lifetime, Arroyo is 7-4 with a 3.62 ERA in 14 appearances (11 starts) against Milwaukee.

MIL: LHP CC Sabathia (15-8, 2.77 ERA)
Sabathia did his part on Friday against the Padres, but the Brewers couldn't close the deal in time for his 10th National League win. Sabathia allowed a leadoff baserunner in five of his seven innings, but he limited the Padres to one run on five hits and went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a go-ahead single. The lead got away from reliever Eric Gagne, but the Brewers rallied to improve to 11-1 in Sabathia's starts.

Tidbits
Baker said that Chris Dickerson's sore left ankle hadn't improved enough for him to start. Dickerson missed his third straight start on Tuesday and wasn't expected to be in Wednesday's lineup. "He's still sore, and I didn't want to take a chance on him rushing that," Baker said. "Plus with CC, he won't play [Wednesday] and then we have an off-day. So that gives him a good three or four days to get this thing better. We'll need him for Arizona and [Brandon] Webb on Friday. I'll need all the left-handed hitters I can get."

The Brewers had the bases loaded and one out and failed to score. And didn't have the bottom of their lineup at bat.

The Reds had a line drive out and a ground ball in which the third baseman made a great throw. And then with two outs, another line drive out. They did at least get their bat on the ball but didn't get much luck. Sabathia ia a pretty tough pitcher to do that against.

Getting runners on base is no guarantee that they will score. Even for the opposition.

You tell Caberra to take first pitch strikes all the time, and he'll be an even worse hitter.

You can't make great pitchers throw first pitch balls just to make the hitter better. Surprisingly, great pitchers throw alot of first pitch strikes.

FWIW, I don't think Dusty views 100 pitches as a magic number of any kind. Seems to me, just from following all these games, that he views 120 as a magic number. Many of the Reds starters seem to get pulled after a good performance in the 120 range.

That was an error all the way. Giving him a single is a joke. Jeff Keppinger is NOT a shortstop. He's awful.

I heard a little bit of the game last night and in the 8th inning, I think, EE had to make a diving stop on a ball and threw in the dirt. Marty and Jeff were both saying that they didn't think the Reds could win with him at 3rd. Of course I'm sure Keppinger got a free pass.

Tony Cloninger
09-10-2008, 04:19 PM
And Votto needs to learn to get in front of the ball........I mean we already know Keppinger has no great range but that is one of the very, very rare times he has thrown a ball away like that.

Please don't tell OBM that 120 pitches is the magic marker for pitches....for Dusty.....he goes into a chicken little dance anytime a pitcher is at or near 100 pitches. ;)

Arroyo with 120 pitches today. Dusty has an enormous bullpen and just can't help but push starters to the limit every day. This is precisely what happened in Chicago. Come August & September, he leaned even more heavily on his horses. Of course, back then he had a playoff race as justification. Now he's using other people's playoff races...

The man just doesn't seem to have a sense of proportion when it comes to the value of a single game versus management of assets for the long term. It's not just stupid, it's selfish.

And who comes out to pitch the 8th? One of the fresh arms? Of course not.

They were just messing with him. After his homerun everyone just sit on the bench and ignored him for a minute. That trick is usually pulled on rookies after hitting their first major league homerun.

I don't blame Weathers. I blame Dusty for using him 3 days in a row. If you're a reliever, sometimes you get the bear and sometimes it gets you. Got a day off tomorrow and then down to Adam Dunn Land.

Okay, YOU may not blame him, but I sure do. His numbers may look good this year and last year, but a lot of it is smoke & mirrors. He's extremely hittable. I've seen VERY few innings out of him the past 2 years where he didn't cause himself some trouble only to luck out of it. He didn't get his usual breaks today. He needs to be gone yesterday.

He is what he is. All he can do is go out there and give his best. It is Weathers' fault that he allowed 2 runs.

But is Dusty's fault that he overused Weathers and put him in to the game in a situation in which a allowing runs would cost us a game.

I didn't get to see the game today and only got to listen to a part of it, but what a disappointment. Up 3-1 in the 7th and leave the bases loaded? An error early on leads to a run (as they always seem to do with the Reds) and that's what beat us?

The team is playing better, but the flaws stick out. This should have been a sweep were it not for the error and some real shoddy pitching by Weathers. I might remind Dusty that there was no reason to leave Weathers in there to get his brains beat out. The reason he didn't use Bray is that he's not dependable if used too much. He pitched the last two days, so he was out. Same with Burton. All that was left was Weathers (who is supposed to have a rubber arm and he proved it today) and the kids. The kids will rot on the bench before he'll put them in a pressure situation.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda.

Low expections + playing out the string = meh.

We stole a couple from the Brewers and now they returned the favor. The worst thing about this one, for me is not tagging CC for the loss.

In the end, the "Meat Loaf" philosophy for this series is fine with me.

Weathers has that front-door, two-seamer that can freeze LHB. I didn't see the 8th inning, but it sounds like that K pitch wasn't working for Stormy today

Hindsight is 20/20, but giving Votto the day off and playing Phillips/Rosales at 1b/2b would've made sense...unless Dusty wanted Votto to get some ABs versus a tough LH like CC? (re: learning curve for Joey, not "playoff integrity")
