Volquez has thrown 117+ pitches in three straight starts...it will be interesting to see how he bounces back tonight.

I look for Pujols to have a huge game tonight. He's 0-for-8 in this series so he's long overdue.

OnBaseMachine

Schumaker grounds out.

Volquez gets ahead 1-2 on Miles and comes back to walk him. Man. You can't walk weak hitters like that with Pujols on deck.

OnBaseMachine

Pujols walks. Volquez is no where near the strikezone tonight. He looks tired.

I raised this in a ST game thread but I am concerned by the Reds being so brazen in the lineup that they put that many batters up in a row with names starting with a J.
What if St. Louis brought Joel, Josh, or Jason (not that one he's hurt, the other one) out of the pen?

OnBaseMachine
09-18-2008, 07:17 PM
Lopez flied out and Glaus popped out. No score after a 1/2 inning.

Maybe they are trying for an Astros thing with the Killer B's?
The Jostling J's?

All they had to do is have Jeremy start, Javy catch and teach Josh to play third and Jerod to play third. That would be the ultimate J lineup.

Last time Lohse pitched against the Reds he was ejected for coming up and in to...was it Volquez or Cueto?

What's George Grande doing not calling a Redbird's series? (not that I mind...)

Pujols homerun. That's what happens when you walk weak hitters like Izturis and Schumaker. Pujols was long overdue.

That happens when a guy gets tired. Volquez is in unchartered territory in terms of innings pitched plus Dusty has overworked him lately.

Tony Cloninger
09-18-2008, 08:10 PM
Yes....i agree with that OBM....but Volquez has problems with pitch counts all year.

For all the stuff this guy has....he sure let's a lot of bad hitters foul pitches off him and frankly....he messes around with bad hitters then loses his mechanics.

Mel Queen pitched good too and then was done. That team was in 1st until around June with good pitching and decent hitting....at least for that year anyways. Hitting was way down all over the leauge.....no team scored 700 runs, i think.

Ted Abernathy was the middle/set up and closer all in one.

He's most likely pitching like this because of his heavy workload. This is the first time he's ever thrown this many innings in his career, plus he's coming off three straight games in which he threw 117+ pitches. With only a handful of games left the Reds need to take it easy on him. For the first time in the longtime the Reds actually have some good young pitching, I'd hate to see it ruined.

I'm sorry, it's not just Bako, it's bunting. I hate bunting. It is usually counter-productive, even when it works.

See THIS site (http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2006/07/empirical_analy_1.php)for an analysis of bunting. The chances of scoring one run with a runner on second and no outs is 60%. THe chances of scoring one run with a runner on third and one out is 66%. Of course, there is also a significant chance the bunt does not work, and you end up with a runner on second and one out, with a 40% probability of scoring.

I just hate giving up outs.

Finding a new shortstop has got to be the number one goal in the offseason for Walt Jocketty. All Keppinger can do is hit weak pop outs/ground outs and watch routine groundballs roll into the outfield. He's a solid sub and that's it.

He's lost something since the injury. Either that or we're seeing why he's never stuck anywhere

Keppinger fouls off a high pitch. 0-1. Called strike two. Ball up and away. 1-2. Ball low. 2-2. Ball up and away. 3-2. Keppinger flies out on ball four. He's awful. Awful. The Reds have three black holes in the lineup when Patterson, Bako, and Keppinger play.

i wouldn't go so far as to say he's awful, he's just getting too much playing time...he's simply not an everyday player...unfortunately, the reds have too many players like him...

He's lost something since the injury. Either that or we're seeing why he's never stuck anywhereI think it's the latter. There is a reason why most players never stick with one club. There is also a reason some don't make it. Kepp was exposed with everyday play.
