Kc61
09-20-2008, 04:09 PM
Jerry "can't wait to see him leave, he's about to revert to form, he's Dusty's guy, we can do better" Hairston gets a single off Sabathia to increase his .390 OBP and .332 average. Keppinger "it's not the injury, he's reverting to form, let's get rid of him" also singles.

And then Joey Votto, who looks like a tremendous young hitter, the kind the Reds have been lacking, singles home the run.

No homers. No balls hit to the moon. No walks. Just hits and a run.

I'm sorry, but that single doesn't make up for how putrid he's been since June.

Nice to see Votto get off the hook against Sabathia with a nice line drive single.

Agree.

The Reds would be making a huge error if they let Hairston walk. What a year this guy is having and, by all accounts, it's simply a matter of being more selective at the plate. Whether he splits a position, platoons, or is the first guy off the bench, he has been terrific and should be kept.

He is consistent like Hatteberg, but adds much more since he can play many positions.

It would be a huge loss to let him go, regardless of his baseball card, and even with his tendency to get injured.

I agree that Kepp hasn't done well lately and generally has been less than stellar against righties. I would be happy to retain him, but only as a backup. Still, I think Kepp was set back by his injury and hasn't been the same.

I do appreciate Kepp's play with the Reds overall, with all the shortsop injuries he has been very helpful to them.

OnBaseMachine
09-20-2008, 04:35 PM
Jeff Keppinger is just a liability in the field everywhere isn't he? Sabathia hits what should have been a doubleplay but somehow Keppinger can't get to the ball and it goes into center field. First and third with one out for Cameron. The REds defense have turned two outs into two singles this inning.

Cueto doesn't have his put away slider today.

OnBaseMachine
09-20-2008, 04:50 PM
Braun singles on a 2-2 fastball. I hate that pitch selection there. Braun eats fastballs for breakfast. I figure this will be the inning they get to Cueto, he just doesn't have his put away stuff.

OnBaseMachine

RBI double by Fielder. I still can't get past that pitch selection to Braun. He had an 0-2 count and threw nothing but fastballs. Should have buried some breaking stuff and forced him to chase. I wonder who is calling pitches?

OnBaseMachine
09-20-2008, 04:56 PM
Again, 0-2 count on Hart and they go back to the fastball.

HokieRed
09-20-2008, 05:01 PM
This 0-2 stuff has happened with Cueto before. Pitch calling sometimes makes no sense on this club.

OnBaseMachine
09-20-2008, 05:09 PM
Cueto has actually been tough on 0-2 counts this year (.381 OPS) but that's because of his filthy slider. Since coming back from his injury his slider has flatted out a bit. He'll be fine with rest.

Sabathia just got a very generous strike call at Cabrera's ankles. I wish Cueto was getting that strikezone today.

Matt700wlw

Hart K's. Very gutsy outing today by Johnny Cueto. He didn't have his strikeout pitch (slider) today but still managed to put together a very good start. He's at 102 pitches and lacking his best stuff so hopefully Dusty does the smart thing and pulls him

Cueto: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 102 pitches.

OnBaseMachine

He'll give the Reds an extra right handed bat off the bench and I hope he gets used next season like he has so far since joining the Reds.

I was thinking how useful Owings would be in a middle relief situation.
How many times have we seen a pitcher starting to struggle in the top of the 6th or 7th, but the manager is somewhat slow to get the hook because he doesn't want to burn a pitcher when the pitchers spot comes up in the bottom of the inning. Now, you bring in Owings, he bats for himself and then you can decide whether or not you want him to pitch in the next inning.
