It's beginning to look like Dickerson is done for the season.

I guess this one will do until it does. Kelch and Welsch doing the game on the radio. Has Marty taken off for the season?

I'm a big jinx. Saturday I mentioned that Cordero had thrown 12 consecutive shutout innings, so what does he do? Serves up a lead off homerun to Rickie Weeks to begin the 9th inning. Today I point out that Harang hasn't allowed an earned run in 16 innings...a minute later Hermida homers.

OnBaseMachine

I love sac bunts in the 1st inning.

OnBaseMachine
09-22-2008, 01:19 PM
The sac bunt didn't help any as Votto followed by popping out for the second out. Hairston remains at third.

That's too bad. I was hoping he could some more plate appearances before the season ended.

The Marlins have a nice young nucleus to build around - Hanley Ramirez, Jeremy Hermida, Dan Uggla, Cameron Maybin, plus other good looking bats like Chris Coghlan, Logan Morrison, and Mike Stanton in the minors. Add in Ricky Nolasco, Andrew Miller, Ryan Tucker, and Chris Volstad and they have the makings of solid pitching staff. With a new stadium to open in a few years, the future of baseball in South Florida looks bright.

3-0 Marlins in the second inning and they have two on with nobody out. Harang seems to only be topping out at 88 today.

That the Billy Beane theory. At the end of the day regardless of talent the save percentage doesn't vary too much.

But, as someone pointed out, obtaining Cordero has stengthen our whole bullpen. While our 9th inning save percentage has remained constant, we aren't blowing games in the 8th innings like we did last year.

When we lead after 7, we have lost only a handfull of games this year.

A bullpen 10 deep and Dusty feels the need to push Harang to 122 pitches and have Weathers set up. Again, maybe it's not "abuse", but it is a risk not worth taking. There's every reason in the world to give some meaningful innings to Roenicke, Herrera, and Masset. I guarantee that if Dusty was asked about letting Harang pitch the 7th, the phrase "get him a win" would be said. Misplaced priorities.

You stand a chance of having Patterson and Hairston platooning next year, along with Bako and Hanigan.

I could see Bako coming back next year, but strictly as a backup to Hanigan. If Hanigan and Bako make up the catching corps next year, then Hanigan will clearly be the #1.

Let me be the first to say, let's trade him for Milt Pappas....

Would you trade Votto for Don Drysdale, Orel Hershiser, Catfish Hunter or Vida Blue?

I've never understood the similarity ratings at baseball-reference.com.

Bringing Paul Bako back next year will be indication the Reds aren't serious about winning. Paul Bako is about as worthless player as you can find.

He handles the pitching staff well.

I'd want someone younger than those one. I would though, trade Valentin for a "bucket of catfish".

You're close, RMR. Here's what Dusty said after the game.

“Been a long time since we scored Harang a lot of runs and they came just on time,” said manager Dusty Baker. “We extended him, left him in there (122 pitches) to get him a victory.

You're close, RMR. Here's what Dusty said after the game.

I swear I hadn't seen anything before posting that. Dusty is just that transparent.

Dusty allowed his ace SP to throw more than 120 pitches with the explicit intent of increasing his chances of accruing a meaningless stat. Meanwhile, said SP struggled with a mechanical flaw most of the year which made him extremely ineffective for long stretches. Said flaw manifested after he came back on short rest after throwing 60+ pitches in relief.

Now, I can't prove causality here any more than anybody else. And I'm not inside Dusty's head. But when people make fun of us "stat types", I can't help but wonder who would benefit most from getting their head out of the stat book and watching a game from time to time.

Wait, isn't he supposed to be terrible? I demand regression!

I'd give him a guaranteed two years. The guy's valuable.
