I've got a good feeling that Cueto is going to beat Oswalt tonight but I won't make that prediction. My predictions have stunk this year... before the season I predicted the Tigers to win close to 110 games and win the World Series. I was just a liiiitttttle off. ;)

Cueto got ahead 0-2 on Matsui, threw a nice pitch on the corner but the ump called it a ball. Now it's 3-2. He reaches on an infield single. I miss the defense of Brandon Phillips at second base.

He just earned himself the leadoff spot for next season.

Looks like a pretty small strikezone tonight. I thought Oswalt got squeezed a bit in the top of the inning and now it appears Cueto is getting squeezed. That looked like strike three on Matsui.

OnBaseMachine

Pence singles on a groundball to CF. Cueto's stuff still isn't as sharp as it was before his injury. Still, I'd say fatigue has more to do with that. It's still encouraging that's he pitched fairly well in his last few starts despite not having his great stuff.

OnBaseMachine

Yep. Jeff Keppinger is a joke of a defensive player. All three of those runs should be unearned but unfortunately you can't assume the doubleplay. No wonder so many teams gave up on Keppinger. He's a liability in the field.

I certainly hope we can find a shortstop who is durable as well as a good fielder (and can hit .270 or so). We see fantastic plays from most of the teams we play, but it's always the same for the Reds. A botched play dooms our team.

So Cueto's ERA will finish above 4.80 - it's hard to tell how much better his ERA would be if he had just an average shortstop behind him. Still, this was a very impressive rookie season by Cueto. He's going to be a stud.

Agreed.

I also thought Cueto tried to nibble too much keeping the ball down and in. He was throwing 94-95 and couldn't get a pitch over. His 2.2 innings showed 7 hits, 5 runs (so far) three walks. Horrible performance.

Cueto did show great improvement in the second half. He posted a 2.77 ERA in in five starts in August, and pitched well in two of his four September starts despite not having his best stuff after the injury.

You do have a point, plus we don't know for sure how long he was dealing with whatever arm problems he was having before it became more public knowledge. Though sometimes even though it was a small sample for Ramirez, it seemed at times that he had better control and location on his pitching than Cueto, maybe I am wrong, nothing new there, it happens.

OnBaseMachine

The Reds have played awful defense all season long but it seems like they always saved their worst for when Cueto pitched. I can remember earlier in the year at Shea Stadium when Griffey and Patterson got mixed up and allowed a ball to drop in to score a couple runs off Cueto. I remember Dunn misplaying a two out flyball in the 7th inning in Chicago back in July - that led to three runs off Cueto, and now tonight Keppinger cost him three or four runs. Nothing is more frustrating than watching the defense give away runs.

WVRedsFan
09-25-2008, 09:25 PM
Here's an interesting stat...every single Astro (including the pitcher) has a higher average than Bako, Richar, and Patterson. Four sure outs out of 9 (excepting Patterson's feak HR) and you don't win many games, especially facing Oswalt.

Cueto had exceptional command and control in the minors... he posted a phenomenal 2.12 BB/9 in the minor leagues. I don't expect control issues to be a problem for him in the future.
