The facts that Soto is a catcher, is in a larger market, and on a playoff team make it a lock that he'll get it.

I agree but its unfortunate because Votto had one hell of a year and his numbers reflected that of a ROY award.

One thing I dont like is that I didnt really hear too many people talking about position or defense last year when it was Braun v the rest.

I agree that Soto will get it because he plays 1. catcher 2. plays for a winner 3. plays in a larger market.

BUT........in my non-homer opinion, Votto's numbers were harder to come by playing on a losing team and in a weaker lineup.

Soto will still get it.

I think that is because since Soto is a catcher, he is filling the most important defensive position on the field.

Does anyone know who votes on this? If it's the sportswriters it will be Soto hands down, people might not agree that hype has anything to do with the voting but Soto's name was floated around all season. He got voted to an All-Star game and that alone would probably be enough for some less informed writers. Votto was largely in Dunn's, Griffey's, and BA minor league player of the year Jay Bruce's shadow for a good portion of the season.

Yea but Braun so so god awful terrible last year at 3rd base yet won the award pretty easily over Tulo.

Soto will win ....but it doesn't mean he is the better player. I hate this political stuff that goes on. I wish they would really give it to the better player

Question is, would the Reds trade Votto straight up for Soto if they could? HELL YES. Would the Cubs do that deal? HELL NO. Because a catcher with those numbers is way more valuable than a 1b with those numbers, period.

I wouldn't call him Johnny Bench until he puts up big numbers two years in a row.

And Votto isn't Don Mattingly yet either. The reality is, if Geovany Soto was a Red and Joey Votto was a Cub, nobody here would be claiming Votto is the clear choice, and no one here would dream of trading away Soto for Votto.

Personally, I think it's a lot harder to put up good numbers in a crappy lineup than it is to put up good numbers in a really good lineup but that's just my opinion. Either way, I'm just happy Joey had a fantastic year and I hope he continues to put up great seasons with the Reds for a long time. :)

.324/.370/34/97 - Braun

.291/.359/24/99 - Tulo

Although Braun was attrocious, and Tulo was phenominal in regards to D, I think Braun sitll had the edge. Since Votto and Soto are extremely similar, you have to give it to the catcher who puts up those numbers while handling the pitching staff.

Votto does have slight advantages in most offensive categories but he is still a first basemen where you are expected to hit well and soto has hit well in a position (catcher) which is more of a defense first spot and has still hit just as well as Votto.

Any other year I think he wins it but it is just an extraordinary season for a rookie catcher.
