View Full Version : SI.com calls Kotsay, Dennys Reyes best FA fits with Reds

Just read article on SI.com listing their top 50 MLB freeagents and a prediction for where a best fit might be for each. The article listed Mark Kotsay (age 33) and Dennys Reyes (age 31) as fits with the Reds.
The rationale given for Reyes was that the Reds will need to replace some FAs they will lose in the bullpen. No real specific rationale stated for Kotsay - in fact, it starts out saying he'd be a reasonable value as a 4th outfielder, but then goes on to say he'd probably get a lot of at-bats for the Reds. It did also say he probably helped his value in general by playing some 1B for the Red Sox.

I don't know.....neither name makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. I'd rather re-sign Affeldt (the article called the Giants his best fit) than Reyes. And Kotsay.... doesn't do a lot for me.

Other names of interest:
Dunn - Angels best fit
Griffey - Mariners best fit (they worked real hard on that one!!!)

maybe on reyes. no on kotsay.
but those articles are just filler that you have to take with a grain of salt.

Ugh, I think I just threw up a little. If that's all the reds do then I don't plan on spending one dollar on them this year

Article didn't make any statements regarding whether there was any interest indicated by the teams, but yeah.....it's hard to get too excited about those names.
Reyes is a lefty specialist, and we are thin on leftys, so he'd be OK for the right $.

Why would you not want Kotsay? I guess hes good enough for the Redsox but not us?

Kotsay has averaged less than a .750 OPS every year since 2004. I am sure that the Red Sox did not plan on starting Kotsay with a healthy Mike Lowell, but Kotsay should not have a place on the 2009 Reds.

If Kotsay will take a very low salary, around $1M and be willing to be a backup, he would make a fine backup CF. He provides strong defense and veteran leadership. But I doubt he will agree to either condition.

I agree. For a reasonable salary, I think he would make a good utility OFer/1Bman. Backups don't typically give you starter stats, that's why they're backups.

I have to be honest with you guys. Even if its not Reyes or Kotsay that we sign, I do project us to have a few guys signed of that caliber, but none bigger. No big names coming to Cincinnati this offseason. Best case scenario maybe Ibanez, but nobody bigger named than that.

There's terrible value in the market this off-season. The big spenders are going to go wild, I think. I wouldn't want any big name players if it means excessive salary. The future is already in the system, and I'd rather see the money spent on extensions for those guys. Still, I'd want to see Walt talking to the FAs, though, even the big-name players. Just in case one slips through the cracks.

Dennys Reyes is a perfect replacement for Affeldt. If we re-sign Affeldt, we lose that sandwich pick. You can get the same production for Reyes and still get the pick.

Problem is if the Reds sign Kotsay then Dusty will start him every day in CF and hit him leadoff because Dusty doesn't understand OBP.

"Gotta love Kotsay dude. Who else am I gonna lead off with, Kotsay got speed dude. I hit behind Hank. Hank pees gold. Gotta love Kotsay dude."

There, that will be every response dusty gives for why Kotsay will start 162 games for cincy.

I agree 100%. Looking down the list of the "top 50" free agents, the list started getting really ugly after the obvious plums at the top. Use the FA market to fill short-term gaps only. But absolutely Walt needs to talk to the FAs to possibly sneak out of the pile with a good one or 2.

Also: good point on the Reyes vs. Affeldt discussion. I hadn't considered the sandwich pick possibility. Stat-wise I prefer Affeldt, but Reyes could be an OK replacement if used properly.

Reyes has inconsistency written all over him. Check out his career stats. It seems every other year he bombs.

Actually, there is more of a correlation between number of wins and the attendance at games, when compared to a team with a lot of "star" players that lose. Obviously, there are exceptions to the rule (ie Yankees and Rays), but generally speaking if you win with bums the fans come to games, but if you lose with stars fans will stay home. Although, I think in this case you might be right because I am not sure if Kotsay will help the reds win; it depends on the role/paycheck he would be willing to accept (both need to be minimal).

Ya a guy with a user name of a middle of the road utility guy must know more about baseball than Theo Epstein, a major league GM with a few World Series under his belt.

Please don't tell me that Katsay is dating Dusty's daughter:eek:

Yeah, I checked out his numbers on baseball cube the other day. he has a higher BB/9 than Affeldt over his career (and Affeldt has a bit of a wild streak), doesn't strike out many, and strikes me as more of a LOOGY. Outside of having a sub 3 ERA 2 of the past 3 years, nothing just really exciting about his stats.
