Gotcha. I was looking at the game day and trying to figure out why you were getting them and why I wasn't lol.

Fay must not have been paying attention - LaRoche singled instead of walking as Fay reported.

Homer: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 4 GO/0 FO

I would really like to see Bailey do very well today and this spring, of course I really want all of the younger pitching to have an exceptional spring and season.

I want all the young pitching to do well but nobody more so than Homer Bailey. Homer is the one guy on this team whose emergence could make this year really memorable.

Reds' 3rd: Bankston walks. Dickerson singles to center. Keppinger hits into a 6-4 DP. Keppinger just got to first to avoid a triple play. Bruce 4-3.

Excellent third inning by Bailey.

Pirates' 3rd: Wilson L6. Jaramillo K on an off speed pitch. McCutchen K. (15 pitches, 10 strikes). That's probably it for Bailey. Excellent outing. 3 IP, 1 hit, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts.

Quantum leap in effectiveness for Homer to start this spring. I still am rooting for him to go to AAA and dominate before a mid-season call-up, but this is very encouraging. I hope we get some more chatter from the writers about how his stuff looks (as opposed to him being nicer to them this spring).

From Fay:

What impressed me about Bailey so far that he's been able to spot his fastball. I believe all four Ks today came on offspeed pitches set up the by the fastball.

I'd agree that Bailey and Owings are ahead right now. It's early, but with so many people in the mix, you can't afford bad outings.

Perhaps but it could also be that he's finally realized that he's got a decent shot to pitch and be successful in the big leagues and that it's about time he really showed what he can do when he pitches instead of throws to batters. ;)

If his slider is looking like it was at the end of last year.... he can be really good this year if he can throw his fastball for strikes.

Wouldn't that be sweet. It would be nice to have to make adjustments seeing good pitching, they may not have the offense, but, it is possible that they can have very good pitching this year. That would be an exciting change.

Anybody think Flores has a chance to make this team? Might have accomplished for them what Rhodes is likely to do and at a much lower cost. Will be interesting to see. I remember watching him in Oakland being pretty effective for a couple of years.

yes -- with Bray slow out of the blocks, I think they're looking closely at him and Danny Ray -- does Bray have options left?

Agree with lollipop, Bray's annual slow start opens the door a bit for another lefty to make the team out of camp until Bray is ready. I am rooting for Herrera myself.

I hope so. He's a phenomenal character guy. If you look at his numbers, you really have to wonder why he hasn't been given more of a chance. He has a reputation of being a lefty specialist, but in the minors, the results weren't much different than they were against right-handers. So far, in the majors, it's been a little bit of a different story, though.

I can't remember if he was optioned last year, but I know he has one or two options left.

edit: Yeah, he was optioned for most of April last year, so he has only one option left.

Anybody know what velocity Homer is working at? If he's spotting that fastball at 94 or so, that's his ticket. But if he's just getting ahead with a straight 91, that's a hitter's adjustment (or late ST bat speed) away from major regression.

Nobody has reported an exact number, but Hal said last week that his velocity looked great.

Truism says pitchers are ahead of hitters at this time. Still, the prospect of Bailey at 91 with control is more promising than 94 without. In other words, he may be intentionally sacrificing some velocity in favor of command. It wouldn't mean he could not reach back for 94 in certain situations.

Whatever the case, it is very encouraging to read all the positive reporting about Homer. Doesn't mean he's going to win 15 games this year, but it does indicate he has turned around what was significantly negative momentum. Best news of ST, so far.
