How has Arroyo pitched so far this spring?

I haven't seen much about him in the news, beyond the fluff piece about his boat.

How has he pitched so far?

I remember he started horribly last season, but ended with just 2 wins less than Volquez's 17.

Arroyo mentioned an improved diet and workout this offseason. Dusty has him penciled in as the #3 behind Harrang and Volquez. If you can get 15 wins out of your #3 you are doing pretty well I think.

I saw a 2009 ERA projection for him around 4.90 (forget where), which I thought was harsh. While Bronson is turning a corner in his career (he turned 32 in February) he seems like one of those players that could turn into Jamie Moyer, with a nicer head of hair of course--rubber arm, unassuming, quietly effective, good control, junk pitches, getcha fishin.

I say 3.90 ERA this year.

Bronson Arroyo gave up two in the first. Could have been worse. Evan Longoria lined into a 6-4 double play. Arroyo ended up going 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out four.

“The way I got hit around the first it forced me to go to high pitch count,” he said. “That taxed me. I really tried to focus and make it through to the next innings. This early – even though we’re halfway through spring – you don’t realize what one long inning can do to you. It can take your energy level down a lot.”


Arroyo retired nine in a row before giving up a solo home run to Willy Aybar in the fourth.



“I got some good work in today,” Arroyo said. “Hopefully my next two starts we'll have good crowds. More of that game feel, tougher lineups, so you can get where you want to be. That way you can get into the sixth or seventh inning without feeling taxed.”


Arroyo is OK with the longer spring training becasue of the WBC.



“Hopefully, the last two starts you’ll be touching 100 pitches,” Arroyo said. “Those first couple of starts, you feel like if you don’t a really good start, you’re not built up enough to get deep into the game.”



Arroyo would like to the chance to throw to catch Ramon Hernandez again.


“That’s a little bit of a concern for me,” Arroyo said. “Based on fact I pitch a little unorthodoxed compared to the other guys. I hope Venezuela loses real quick. I’d like to spend some time with him.”

Paul Janish hit a RBI triple in the second, just missed going out.

By the way, Adam Rosales has clinched the "ceremonial first-pitch caught" title. He's out there pretty much everyday.

Jeff Keppinger singled in the first. I predict he goes like 5-for-9 over the next couple of days. He singled in the third.

Couple of notes:

--Bill Bray is dealing with a slightly strained left hamstring. He's thrown live batting practice. But they don't want to risk putting him a game, where he may have to cover first.

--Homer Bailey and Daryl Thompson will pitch in minor league intrasquad game on the Monday's off day.

That bothers me a little too. The more time Hernandez misses due to the WBC the more likely there could be minor problems becoming acclimated to the Reds pitchers. It may result in Hanigan seeing a little more time in April. Venezuela faces Puerto Rico on Monday night.
