0-0 Top of 2

Seems odd to call for an intentional walk in spring training. Seems like pitchers would be working on going after good hitters, rather than working on their intentional walks.

At this point, I think it HAS to be clear that Massett is AT BEST the long man in the BP. Owings and Bailey have made him look like fodder (as has his own pitching, but you know what I mean).

JaxRed
03-15-2009, 03:34 PM
Ward in for Votto, retired. Now at Mendoza line
Janish in for Phillips retired
Jones in for Bruce retired. Now hitting .080 that is not a typo.....

He's not a K an inning guy, he's been eminently hittable in his career, I just don't see why they hold a candle for him in that role. I would rather see Herrera be the 12th guy on the staff than Masset.

Agreed. If he continues to pitch sub-standard...dump him regardless of his contractual status or option status. We've got LOTS of options for pitchers who can easily replace him.

IMO, the 12th guy would depend upon what they do with Homer & Micah. If they go with Homer, then Micah's the long man. If they go with Micah, Homer's in AAA and it opens up a slot for Roenicke, Herrera or even Ramirez.

Yep, in more innings and against actual real-life competition.

Plus, we're still far removed from opening day. What if Masset's next 10 innings are lights out and Homer and Micah struggle? Shouldn't that trump the first 10 innings?

It's a few innings in spring training, people. Get a grip.

Trust me..... Micah is the guy barring a total collpase or injury, with Bailey going to AAA.

But Roenicke or Herrera make no sense as long men, and you want Rameriez in AAA as a starter.

You can send down those guys and not lose them. You send down Masset you've lost him forever. Jocketty liked this guy enough to trade for him, and he pitched well for us in regular season.

He's the long guy.

Get a grip yourself. I'm just offering an opinion. And MY opinion is based on more than the 17 whole innings he threw in Cincy in September. Please.

He DID have a track record prior to being dealt for the corpse of Griffey, Jr.

Masset BABIP:

2007 (White Sox): .362
2008 (White Sox): .364
2008 (Reds): .265

One of those things is not like the others. And I would submit that the one in Cincy is because he had half the innings as the other major league outings. Sample size, don't you know.

That must have been way underground. He didn't even do the job as spring closer well. If he had, he would have given up 2 instead of 1.

I didn't realize he had no options....that makes sense for a roster spot barring a trade.

While one shouldn't jump to conclusions based on a slow start to the spring....the guy is turning 27 in May, and outside of those 17 innings last year, hasn't done anything in his minor league career to make one believe he can be a viable long term option. 31-49 minor league record with a 6.4 k rate and 1.46 whip...bleh.

If he pitches poorly as long man in regular season, by all means waive him, and don't take long to do it. But I'd give him that chance, and I bet the Reds will too.

You do understand that his 2007 and 2008 BABIP for the WS were very unlucky?

You can't always simply dump guys who are out of options because they have peformed poorly in ST.

I bet that the Indians wish they hadn't rushed to judgement on Brandon Phillips.

You can pick up a lot of talent at the end of ST if you look at who's out of options.

Having said that, Masset does nothing for me.

BABIP in his minors outings since 06 ranged from .321 - .377

You do understand what a pattern is, don't you?

He's 27 with no history of any kind of success. He doesn't miss bats. His fast balla, she's a straighta. The parallels between he and Phillips are that they are both human and play baseball. After that commonality is acknowledged, your effort to draw a comparison between the two is laughable.

Oh, I agree. I was talking specifically about Masset. We've just got too many OTHER options with just as much (if not MORE) upside as Masset. I don't see much of a need for him in our bullpen this season.
