Homer throws a 1-2-3 first inning. He was mostly throwing fastballs with a few changeups mixed in.

Top 2:

Doumit fell behind 0-2 after looking bad on a breaking ball on the previous pitch. Next pitch Homer jams Doumit and he grounds routinely to third base, but the Reds had the shift on so it's an infield single.

Smart play by Votto not to try for the DP there.

I noticed how he's holding his glove lower on D now too.

If he tries for the DP there we would have an answer for our 5th SP problem. Due to Bailey's broken face :D

LaRoche grounded out on a 2-1 changeup.

Hinske gets ahead 3-0, two of which were borderline. Two called strikes. 3-2 now. Strike three called. Great job by Homer to come back and get him. Two outs.

I know it's only spring, but Homer Bailey isn't the same pitcher that many were ready to give up on a year ago....

I hope it carries over. He really could be something.

Homer's hit a hiccup here in the 4th...

OnBaseMachine
03-21-2009, 02:04 PM
Homer has struggled with command in the 4th inning. He got ahead 0-1 on Sanchez and then walked him on four straight balls. He then got ahead 0-2 on McLouth, threw a 1-2 pitch that could have been strike three but was called a ball and then McLouth homered a pitch later. Doumit singles and LaRoche walks.

Homer looked great the first three innings but has been struggled with command this inning.

Maybe the long reliever role isn't a bad idea? I remember when Reitsma was a starter, he was good for about 3 innings, too

Did I say he did? Either a kids a starter, or he's not. The jury's still out on Bailey. My original take stands, he could be valuable this year as a middle reliever. If he eventually proves he can pitch 6-7 inning quality starts, all the better.

I'm afraid we'll see stretches like this throughout the season too... We'll lose a lot of 2-1, 3-2 games.... It's a shame too, we have a very good staff, but abandoned putting together a decent offense this off season...

Dusty is upset:

Dusty Baker was regular-season mad after the Reds spring training loss Saturday.

The game ended on a called third strike to Joey Votto with the bases loaded. Home plate umpire Wally Bell rang Votto up as he started toward first.

"Was that pitch even close?" Baker said.

The media's conclusion was it wasn't, that Bell didn't want to go extra innings.

"That's bull," Baker said.

I think the umps have to call it straight in spring training. Votto shouldn't be forced to swing at a really bad pitch because the ump has a reservation for surf and turf somewhere. If spring training really doesn't matter to the point where an ump can make a call because he wants to go home, then give all the fans paying money for seats their money back.

I was listening to yesterday's game while outside digging up a garden and I hear voices in the background as you always do in Spring Training games, folks yacking away, etc. I thought I heard one of my younger brothers voice. I knew he had planned a trip to Spring Training so I called to see if he was there. Sure enough this was the weekend and he was at the game. "How far are you from the booth?" He said he was down behind the dugout about 100 yards away. Well, I know my brother is loud, but his conversational tone isn't THAT loud.

So today he calls me as he's driving up I-75 heading to catch his plane in Tampa and he told me after he got off the phone that they realized there was a crowd mike about ten feet from them. I was hearing him! How's that for ironic?
