View Full Version : 3/28/09 vs. Rays

VR

Top 6, Jay Bruce (2-3) gets what looks like a 2 out, 2 rbi single to put the Reds up 2-1.
EV goes 5, gives up 1 run (what the?!), 4 bb's, 3k's.

Bray in to pitch the 6th....needing to prove he's ready to start the year in Cincy. My vote? Go to AAA, keep DRH up.

I will say from listening to it that Volquez appears to be in the same "dead arm" period for command that Owings, Bailey, and a few others are in. But major props to Volquez, like Owings before him, for working through the walks and limiting the damage.

Game underway, Arroyo works out of trouble in the top of the first, with the help of a nice defensive play by Rosales, apparently.

Infield hit for Taveras, beats out throw to 1b after a diving stop by Morgan Ensberg of a ball he hit down toward 3b.

Hairston draws a walk. Votto up with two on and no one out.

Flies out to FL. Phillips now up.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:20 PM
Phillips draws a BB to load the bases.

Jay Bruce up, lefty against nasty lefty.

membengal

Bruce Ks on a 2-2 breaking ball.

Adam Rosales up.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:24 PM
Rosales flies out, inning over.

0-0 after one.

Again, this is the 3/29 Reds/Rays game, since a thread has not been opened by the mods, we are using yesterday's aboritive thread...

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:29 PM
Arroyo gets through the top of second without incident.

0-0 game, middle of two.

For those of you wondering, Marty B has quietly begun his whispering campaign against Bruce. Marty B was displeased over the K with the sacks full.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:31 PM
Dickerson with the bunt single off the tough lefty. Nice play from Dickerson.

Marty and Jeff like them some Dickerson.

membengal

Ground ball moves Dick to 2b. I missed the other out, Arroyo is up with two gone.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:34 PM
Arroyo flies to RF.

Actually, that was apparently the second out, Marty B misspoke a minute ago. No one will criticize him for that in front of a regional audience, so he gets a pass. Unlike poor Reds who displease him.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:35 PM
Marty B just said "tired old Ed Smith" for approximatley the 454025th time since coming on the air today.

Taveras up.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:36 PM
Taveras flies out.

After two innings, 0 - 0.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:39 PM
Single for Tampa starts the 3rd, a blooper blooperson for Rey Olmedo.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:41 PM
Kazmir unequal to the task of laying down a bunt, Ks.

One out, one on.

Arroyo sounds sharper than he was in the first inning.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:42 PM
Arroyo induces a nice 5-4-3 DP, 0-0 middle of three.

Reds' starting pitching has been right frisky in the last week. Hope we are not looking back on this as fool's gold when the games start next week.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:50 PM

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:53 PM
jay bruce, already tired of marty b starting to slag him, homers to RF, driving home Votto.

2-0 Reds.

Jay Bruce will eventually be just fine against lefties. He's 22. Marty B, and anyone else who is "concerned", needs to chill and let him grow into the very good ballplayer he is going to be.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:53 PM
Rosales flies out to end the inning.

2-0 Reds after 3.

membengal
03-29-2009, 02:57 PM
Hairston commits an error to start the 4th at SS. Ground single follows. And then another single to RF.

Runners at 1st and 2nd, no outs.

2-1 Reds.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:00 PM
walk loads the bases.

no outs.

Morgan ensberg up.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:03 PM
Line drive to SS, Hairtson makes a nice pick to keep it from short-hopping.

One out.

Runners stuck. Bases still loaded.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:04 PM
Single to RF scores one, but the second runner makes a BAD decision to test Jay Bruce, and Bruce throws him out at home.

Joe Maddon not happy about it, comes out to discuss with the ump.

Life's hard, Joe.

2-2 game. Now two outs.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:05 PM
Rey Olmedo continues to torture his former team, a bad hop single puts Tampa up 3-2.

It gets worse. Kazmir just doubled to deep LF.

5-2 Tampa.

two come home.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:06 PM
Another hit moves Kazmir to 3b.

Arroyo has sufficiently ended the spell the Reds staff had put together on line-ups around Florida in the last week.

membengal

Another solid hit to LF scores yet another Ray. Dickerson may have misplayed that, listening to Jeff B.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:09 PM
Between the error to start the inning, and mistake to Kazmir, and that from Dickerson, pitching AND defense has conspired to ruin the Reds this inning.

6-2 Rays at the moment. Arroyo still trying to get back to the dugout.

membengal

Fly ball to RF finally ends the inning.

Eight run inning for Tampa.

8-2 Rays.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:16 PM

Arroyo coming to the dish, to get his bunt on.

He bunts, and runner moves to 2b.

Runner on his Ramon H.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:18 PM
Taveras Ks.

8-2 Rays after four innings.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:22 PM
Fly ball to RF falls between Bruce and Taveras. Each apparently thought the other had it. Neither did.

Runner on second. "Double".

Marty B now slagging on Taveras' D. Marty B is grumpy today.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:24 PM
Base hit moves the runner to 3b.

No outs.

Reds probably wish this one had indeed been rained out.

We have moved to "getting their work in" stage in this one.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:26 PM
Fly ball to CF scores the runner.

Marty B is now noticing that the wind may be screwing the OFers up, as Taveras misjudged that, as Dickerson apparently did the inning before.

It would explain some of the OF issues that all three reds OFers have had.

One out.

9-2 Rays.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:26 PM
Ground ball single moves runners to 1st and 2nd.

Arroyo STILL "getting his work in".

Kazmir up.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:28 PM
Lead runner hung out to dry on missed bunt by Kazmir, thrown out.

Two outs.

Runner on 2nd.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:29 PM
Unfortunately, Scott Kazmir is having the game of his life with the stick.

Singles up the middle, runner scores.

10-2. Rays.

Marty B now turning an angry eye on Arroyo.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:30 PM
Today's game from Arroyo counts exactly as much as the 19 straight shut-out innings the Reds starters had earlier this week, by the way.

Just sayin'...

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:31 PM
Another single moves runner to second.

Dusty Baker chewing the toothpick, decides Arroyo has "gotten enough work in", pulls Arroyo after Arroyo gives up his 14th hit in 4 2/3.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:32 PM
That gives Arroyo a chance to say this in response to a question about how he could have given up 14 hits in 4 2/3:

I hung a curveball.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:34 PM
Viola in, I think.

Gets a flyball to end the inning.

10-2 Rays middle of 5.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:38 PM
Hairston flies out.

Votto up.

Jeff B notes Rays outfielders are not having an issue with the wind, putting it back onto miscommunication as to the Reds' issues.

Or, if I may, large hidden fans that the Rays are nefariously turning on when they hit fly balls...

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:40 PM
Two more outs in quick succession.

10-2 Rays after five.

membengal

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:47 PM
Fly ball ends the inning.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:54 PM
No problem, hoped it was useful for someone.

Dickerson singles, with two outs, I think, to extend the inning.

Jeff B now saying that he DOES think the wind has been tricky for the Reds OFers today. They're there. They have a better shot at knowing that than we do.

Hanigan up for Ramon H now.

membengal
03-29-2009, 03:56 PM

1st and 2nd, two outs.

Darnell McDonald pinch-hitting for Viola. Rays deciding whether to leave Kazmir in.

membengal

Only three of those runs against Arroyo were earned. Hairston is brutal at SS.

membengal
03-29-2009, 04:00 PM
The game w/in the game continues. Even in a blowout loss, interesting things to follow. For instance, Bill Bray on to pitch the 7th. The murmuring is that he is potentially facing demotion. So the inning is of importance for Bray.

One pitch, fly ball out to CF.

membengal
03-29-2009, 04:01 PM

True, not a good play to start the inning.

Still.......14 hits. 14. Not a good day from Arroyo, regardless. Note, I am NOT worrying about the bad day, it's spring. But, not a good day.

membengal
03-29-2009, 04:14 PM
Middle of 7.

And, yeah. I think Janish needs to be on this team, someway, somehow. If Alex G can't go some games, I don't want Hairston at SS in the late innings of a close game. Kepp either.

More like Kepp/Hairston.

The Reds have to do something about the SS situation. The key to the season might be the health of Gonzalez, and that's not a good thought.
