That's probably the opening day lineup except for possibly SS....and pitcher, obviously.

If either Hairston or Gonzalez plays SS, they will most likely bat 2nd.

Owings threw a scoreless first inning.

Bottom 1 against Joba Chamberlain:

Taveras made an out, Dickerson doubled, Votto walked, Phillips and Bruce both made outs.

On Owings days he could bat further up in the lineup if Dusty was feeling "daring"

Wow! Owings really is looking sharp this spring. Makes it hard to temper excitement, knowing that none of this counts until next week.

Top 3rd:

Berroa singled, was then picked off first base by Ramon Hernandez. Pena made an out. Gardner singled but was caught stealing by Hernandez.

So far I like what I have seen/read about Hernandez behind the plate...

Owings walked Swisher to begin the fourth, then rebounded to strikeout Teixeira and Posada. Nady reached on an error by Bruce which ended up leading to three unearned runs. 3-0 Yankees after 3 1/2.

Owings: 4 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Lots of baserunners allowed by Owings for the second straight outing.

To be fair, it should only be five baserunners through four innings. The error extended the inning and the next two batters got hits.

Debbie Downer.

I'm thinking more like Micah Maddness. :)

I don't know about what happened after the error but, so far, that's a nice performance against a good lineup.

Is there anyone out there that doesn't think the # 5 slot will be much improved this year?

What Hernandez has done defensively in this game is also encouraging.

From Fay's blog:

Owings gave up three runs in the fourth. All were unearned as thje result of Jay Bruce's error. He dropped a popup. It was Brandon Phillips' ball. Bruce came all the way in to the infield first on the play. The other day Phillips went dep into right to takea ball that Bruce should caught. They got to get that stuffed worked out.

Actually, the play that Fay is referring to from the other day was Willy Taveras' ball. That's the game that was on TV. Phillips ran halfway into CF and and Taveras pulled up the and ball ended up dropping. I can't really blame them too much during ST because most of the time the wind is playing tricks with the ball.

That's not a bad line for Micah against a tough Yankee lineup. Too bad about the error but he's still pitching quite well. :)

I think it will definitely be much improved. That assumes Owings and/or Bailey stay relatively healthy this year of course.

Another nice outing for Owings today.

Debbie Downer.

Well, it is the truth, is it not?

He doesn't have a long history of allowing tons of baserunners, I don't believe, so I wasn't trying to over-emphasize it. He has earned the #5 job at least for now.

I was just messing with you, Doc. At the time you posted that he had allowed more baserunners than what I'd like to see. Although an error did lead to a couple of extra runners.

A Yankees lineup minus A-Rod, Jeter, Damon, Matsui and Cano? That's five of nine starters not in there.

It's not like it's something out of AAA, but the lineup NY ran out there today is about average for a NL team these days.

Just putting it in perspective.

True, but Ramon Hernandez also erased two of his baserunners with a pickoff and a caught-stealing; plus, Nick Masset did a great job going sac fly-DP grounder to keep Owings' ERA down. It's not like the rest of the crew was working against him the entire time.

Managers also need to practice their argument techniques in spring... ;)

For me, these are the most annoying of fielding mistakes. If I'm Baker, I'm all over them for this kind of stuff. At the same time, if they need to spend some time working on it, they should. Having great range, like Phillips does, is good, but the downside is he flies into areas other guys can patrol more easily. They need to sort this out.

The Reds score two runs in the sixth inning. Votto and Phillips walked and Bruce and Hernandez each singled in a run. Bruce is 2-for-3.

4-2 Yankees after 6.

I'm really confused on how a manager gets tossed during a ST game. I can't fathom how that happens, I really can't. I'm not mad that it happened or anything just would like to see it, I wonder if someone finds a clip or something if they could post it.

Thanks

Baker was ejected for the first time ever from a spring game.

Chris Dickerson asked the home plate umpire where a pitch was. The umpire wouldn't answer Dickerson, who had been rung up on a called Strike 3 in his last at-bat. Baker came out. "I got upset," Baker said.

Baker spent the rest of inning in the dugout.

"I told him I ain't leaving," Baker said. "It's a long walk. I didn't want to hold up the game."

I understand that players don't need to insult umpires but is it really wrong to ask where a pitch was in the strike zone? Seems a bit inflexible to me.

Stuff like that is why players like playing for Dusty.

Some complain about him always referencing his playing experiences, but he does know what makes players tick.

If someone asks that question to me I tell them it was in the strike zone.

It depends how they ask. 99% of the time the player is wanting to create a conflict and will ask in a rude or sarcastic tone. If they do that then they won't get a respectful response.
