I guess Kissimee is a long trip from Sarasota, so everyone who had the moxie to ask for a day off did?

I read earlier today that it's a 2.5 hour drive from Sarasota to Kissimmee and that the 'regulars' were all playing in minor league games today back in Sarasota. :)

I wonder if our B team will be able to hit Oswalt today considering how much trouble he usually gives our A team during the season. :bang:

Homer put down Matsui, Pudge and Tejada in one, two, three fashion with ease.

It looks like the guys competing for jobs are all starting: Bailey pitching, McDonald/Nix and Rosales/Janish. The fact that Castillo is not in there probably means he is headed for AAA. I wonder if Herrera and Bray will pitch?

I listened to the pre-game in my truck before coming in from lunch : Dusty did not comment directly about who the 5th starter would be, but everything he said about Homer (all positive BTW) sure gave the indication he was going down and Owings would be the guy.

Oswalt is perfect through two as well.

Bottom 3:

Bourn doubled, Johnson and Oswalt struckout, Matsui RBI single, and Pudge made an out to end the inning.

EE playing in a major league game means the FO doesn't think he'll need any time on the DL. great news.

I think Dusty prefers Janish because he's a good defensive SS, especially with the uncertainty of Gonzalez. Then again, if Gonzalez goes to the DL, Janish and Rosales will both make the team.

Assuming he's done for the day, what a fantastic spring Homer Bailey had. Definetly gives alot of hope going into the regular season.

I thought about going to today's game but the weather scared me off. Lots of rain. I'm surprised they didn't get rain there. I suspect that also played a part with first string not wanting to go.

Both Thom and Kent Merker seem pretty high on Bailey today.

I really hope he's able to harness that pitch because he could really spin it when he first came up. Just needed to tighten it up a little to get it called for strikes. (I thought he showed signs of doing it when he was recalled in late 07 -- but then in 08, for some reason, he got away from the curveball.) If he can command the fastball and curve, watch out.

He's the true utility guy on the roster IMO. If Gonzalez gets DL'ed, I think SS goes to a combo of Janish and Hairston.

I still think Micah gets that #5 spot but boy is Homer making things interesting! Good for him to finally be putting things together and won't that be a great thing for the Reds to have in their back pocket going into the season. :jump:

I read somewhere he was one of the team's better hitters in HS.
(Hitting Cleanup or Fifth).

It's probably harder to forget than to learn (to hit).

I'm not a fan of trading away pitching this early in the season, especially for a club that's not known for having a decent stockpile of pitchers over the past few years. You never know who might go down with an injury and then you're stuck if you've traded away too many players from AAA who are nearly ready for the big leagues. That may just be me though. *shrugs*

Good for Homer to have a great outing today! :)

As far as hitting goes, Homer Bailey is no Micah Owings, but he certainly doesn't embarrass himself at the plate. Of the Reds pitchers, he's easily the second-best hitter still in camp.

If I felt Homer could ever improve the time it takes him to deliver the ball with a runner(s) on, I'd never want to trade him. But the fact is, so far, any runner steals on him at will. Today is a good example, if I'm not mistaken, all runners stole every base available while he pitched.

In the bigs, thats a disadvantage that quickly erodes the advantages of great stuff.

Greg Maddux didn't care too much about the runners on base.

Its just the spring and who knows what Dusty and Dick told Homer today. They may have told him to just go out there, locate all your pitches, and not worry too much about the runners on base.

Lots of errors by the Reds and hits by the Astros in the 8th. The Astros lead it 7-2 going to the 9th. Mercker thinks the Reds are just sick of ST by now and ready to start the season. I think everyone is.

True but since 2007 the losses to the Astros seem to have a late inning meltdown component versus the just getting blown out portion of recent games versus the Dodgers
