Aaron Harang (6-17, 4.78 ERA)
http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_421685.jpg

There is no other way to put it -- this will be the most critical season of Aaron Harang's career. The belief among all concerned was that Harang's 2008 season was a fluke. After all, a dependable starter like Harang, who won 16 games each in 2006 and '07, doesn't normally just fall off the map and go 6-17. It will be on Harang's shoulders to prove that it was a just one bad year.

During the offseason, Harang dropped 25 pounds and worked on his endurance. His body, especially his legs, didn't respond well to a difficult task of having to pitch three times in eight days. During an 18-inning game on May 25, Harang had to pitch four innings of relief on short rest but still returned to make his next start without an extended break. In the final 18 starts following that bullpen outing, Harang went 4-11 with a 5.71 ERA and also missed a month with a sore right forearm. His ERA was 3.50 during his first 11 starts. On the first day of spring, Baker did not waver when he said that Harang would still be his ace and Opening Day starter. That was despite the emergence of Edinson Volquez, who won 17 games and became an All-Star.

This will be the fourth straight year that Harang gets the Opening Day assignment, which is the longest streak since Jose Rijo did it four times in a row from 1992-95.

vs.

Johan Santana (16-7, 2.53 ERA)
http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_276371.jpg

Santana has a 1-0 record in four appearances (three starts) against the Reds. His lone victory came at Shea Stadium on May 10, 2008, in a game the Mets won, 12-6. He had a no-decision in his other start against them last July 17. Santana pitched merely four innings, his shortest workday in 34 starts, in Great American Ball Park. He surrendered 16 hits, three of them home runs, and eight runs in 10 innings. His 6.75 ERA against the Reds (17 1/3 innings) is higher than his ERA against any other opponent by nearly two runs.

Santana has started merely three Opening Day games, losing to the Blue Jays in Toronto in 2006, beating the Orioles in 2007 and beating the Marlins in Miami in his Mets debut last season. He allowed five baserunners and two runs in seven innings of what became a 7-2 Mets victory.

Santana's performances in his first games -- whether or not they were Opening Day games -- haven't been consistent with his other work. In the four seasons in which he has been a full-time starter, he has a 2-1 record and a 6.10 ERA in his season debuts. Santana pitched merely 20 2/3 innings in the four games. Each was staged in a dome or a park with a retractable roof -- two in the Metrodome in Minneapolis, and one each in Safeco Field in Seattle and Rogers Centre in Toronto.

As we move onto a new season, it's fun to look at the past. Here is a team shot of the 1909 Reds that took the field 100 years ago. This squad finished 77-76, good for 4th place in the National League:

C/O Trent:

Just heard one Met beatwriter bet another that Micah Owings will have two hits, including a homer, off of Oliver Perez on Thursday.

The rest of the rotation looks like this:

Wednesday vs. Mets: RHP Edinson Volquez vs. RHP Mike Pelfrey
Thursday vs. Mets: RHP Micah Owings vs. LHP Oliver Perez
Friday vs. Pirates: RHP Johnny Cueto vs. RHP Jeff Karstens
Saturday vs. Pirates: RHP Aaron Harang vs. LHP Paul Maholm
Sunday vs. Pirates: RHP Bronson Arroyo vs. RHP Ian Snell

Today's transaction, the Reds officially purchase the contract of OF Laynce Nix from Class AAA Louisville. Nix will wear 17, Darnell McDonald will wear No. 16.

Bronson Arroyo has started throwing right now (9:50). Dick Pole's headed out to the bullpen. I'm gonna head downstairs.

UPDATE (11:03 a.m.): Players are out in the rain throwing right now. There's been reports of snow flakes coming down. I haven't seen 'em yet.

So, talked to Bronson Arroyo who said he threw 40 pitches in his bullpen and felt great. He still hopes to throw on Thursday.

He said the 40 pitches was a bit more than he'd usually throw this far out, but he thew a few more "just to let them know I'm not full of (it) when I said I'm good to go."

After the swelling from the cortisone went down, Arroyo said his arm felt great. He compared what he was doing before to shooting free throws with a glove on, you can do the action, but you have no touch.

Bullpen coach Porky Lopez caught his session.

Micah Owings also said he hasn't been told he'd start on Thursday for Arroyo.

* Willy Taveras said he feels "a lot better." He had been sidelined with the flu, but said he'd be available if needed today.

I'd say the Reds might have the upper hand pitching-wise in three of those games: Wednesday's, Friday's, and Sunday's (provided Owings goes Sunday). They're definitely underdogs against Perez and Maholm.

I'll buy the Perez game based on Owings being somewhat unproven, but Maholm? Granted, he looked fantastic this spring, but I'm hesitant to count Harangatang out yet. I think he bounces back big-time this season.

What can I say, I'm usually pretty optimistic...but on opening day...Let's start our drive to the Series!!! :O)

Perez came back from the WBC in terrible shape. He gained weight and his mechanics were off. In his last preseason start, he only lasted 2/3 of an inning. He was so bad that Manuel didn't leave him in to get his work.

He'll probably come out and throw a no-hitter now, but he's been god-awful over the past few weeks.

These are the plays that have haunted the Reds over the last several years. Not the errors, but the little plays that could have been outs....allowing innings to continue, pitchers to get more wear, and never get noticed in the box score. Being able to execute in all situations just wears down an opponent, knowing they need to earn every thing.
Winning teams get it done....let's hope the trend ends in '09!

I cannot underscore enough, for those of you who are not watching, that the two steals so far have clearly been off Harang. Whether or not Hernandez is or is not a good catcher in terms of throwing out runners we won't know until a pitcher does a better job holding runners close and keeping them from getting running leads.

The first steal Hernandez made closer than it should have been. The last steal, the throw was on the 3b side of the bag, but it wouldn't have mattered, the bag was so clearly stolen. Heck, Phillips was even late getting to the bag it was so stolen.
