So, the excuse was we need McDonald to play CF while Taveras was out. Now that he is in LF, what is the excuse for keeping him over Jonny Gomes?

Matt700wlw
04-09-2009, 12:11 PM
Dickerson should get at bats against both righties and lefties if you're not going to have a LEGIT platoon partner.

Maybe McDonald can surprise us, but I'm not counting on it.

Reds aren't comfortable with Jonny Gomes playing in the outfield, presumably.

In the pregame show, Dusty says they're on the honor sytem. If Bronson says he's ok to go, then he's ok to go. He says it's up to the player to let him know if something's wrong.

Even if Arroyo gets out of this, his stay on the mound will be shorter because of these miscues. It's now a high stress inning, a lot of pitches. Just terrible.

I think it was more because he looked good doing it. It was an easy play, or at least one that I'd expect even mediocre fielders to make most times, but you could see that Janish had really good footwork, getting himself in a position to field that ball in a perfect position where he could get back up and be in a position to make a clean throw to first.

Just watching these first few games, the Reds defense really kills any chance of winning. Extra outs, extra runs, this is really the team's fatal weakness.

If Janish continues to play well in the field, I would give him a lot of playing time.

And it works the other way -- Mets would have scored already if not fo Hanigan's good throw.

That was not an easy play in LF, but I agree with Jax that a top notch left fielder with speed could have reached it. McDonald is not adding anything defensively, he should be sent down.

When you watch the game focusing on defense instead of hitting you really start to understand why the Reds constantly lose. So many extra outs given to the other team, one after the other.

Correct, except it's not poor management. It's an unwillingness (understandable) to tell the fans what's really happening -- the team is being built through the farm system. No big free agents. No new major contracts.

The Reds are just biding time until the lineup has Alonso, Frazier, Bruce, Votto, maybe Valaika, Bailey, Roenicke, Viola. Many of the current guys are stop gaps and this is the result.

Two botched double plays today and three in the last two games. I think the defense has actually gotten worse, if that's possible. Can't really fault the pitching when the fielders can't catch the ball. I don't care who you are, when you give teams four and five outs a game you are going to allow runs.

I don't know which Reds pitchers have a .241 BA, except maybe Owings who can hit but isn't ever exposed to serious right handed pitching.

Janish will never be a great hitter, but if he continues to play outstanding defense IMO he will be adequate in the 8th spot in the order. Last year he made contact most of the time and he's supposedly stronger this year.

I was being a little big sarcastic, but I know there are 3 pitchers on the reds staff who would hit around that average in AA or AAA, especially if they worked on hitting daily... Regardless of how good of a defender Janish is, there is no way it makes up for his lack of offensive capabilities. On the Yankees, yes... But, we can't have 2 automatic outs at the bottom of the order the way our line-up is constructed...

In the macro, I think the defense is going to be monumentally better. Greatly improved at the corners w/ another year for those two. Improved cohesiveness up the middle w/ Gonzo and BP. No contest at catcher and the 3 outfield positions. Not even close, actually.

So, yes....there will be speed bumps, but the table is set for much better d on the field and on the bench.

Not to interfere with the game thread, but I respectfully disagree. I feel the opposite. Many Reds over the last few years could not make up offensively for their failure to play defense.

Janish in the 8 hole will be just fine if he continues with the leather. It would be nice to have occasional defensive innings when the pitcher only has to get three outs.
