It was a nice play, not great. Of course, compared to what we are use to recently at ss, I can understand the excitement.

I think it was more because he looked good doing it. It was an easy play, or at least one that I'd expect even mediocre fielders to make most times, but you could see that Janish had really good footwork, getting himself in a position to field that ball in a perfect position where he could get back up and be in a position to make a clean throw to first.

Just watching these first few games, the Reds defense really kills any chance of winning. Extra outs, extra runs, this is really the team's fatal weakness.

When you watch the game focusing on defense instead of hitting you really start to understand why the Reds constantly lose. So many extra outs given to the other team, one after the other.

Correct, except it's not poor management. It's an unwillingness (understandable) to tell the fans what's really happening -- the team is being built through the farm system. No big free agents. No new major contracts.

The Reds are just biding time until the lineup has Alonso, Frazier, Bruce, Votto, maybe Valaika, Bailey, Roenicke, Viola. Many of the current guys are stop gaps and this is the result.

That is how I saw it. but Berkman is an up and down player offensively. not nearly the consistent threat Pujols is. I think Votto has a better year than Berkman this year.

In the macro, I think the defense is going to be monumentally better. Greatly improved at the corners w/ another year for those two. Improved cohesiveness up the middle w/ Gonzo and BP. No contest at catcher and the 3 outfield positions. Not even close, actually.

So, yes....there will be speed bumps, but the table is set for much better d on the field and on the bench.

Not to interfere with the game thread, but I respectfully disagree. I feel the opposite. Many Reds over the last few years could not make up offensively for their failure to play defense.

Janish in the 8 hole will be just fine if he continues with the leather. It would be nice to have occasional defensive innings when the pitcher only has to get three outs.

Not to interfere with the game thread, but I respectfully disagree. I feel the opposite. Many Reds over the last few years could not make up offensively for their failure to play defense.

Janish in the 8 hole will be just fine if he continues with the leather. It would be nice to have occasional defensive innings when the pitcher only has to get three outs.
