What were we saying about that DP earlier being the #1 web gem for the day? I don't think so. :O)

Happy Easter! Now lets see Harang hang the ultimate egg on the Buccos.

Is that a worse base running error by Bruce than what he did yesterday?

Didn't the Reds have a play on?

Exactly, the runners were moving on the pitch.

That is probably the easiest triple play you will see.

Harang has moved the ball around very well. But how is that different from Volquez and Cueto nibbling? If you had to explain it to Volquez and Cueto.

The plate is 17" wide. Divide it into half and throw to one-half of the half plus the quadrent of the hitter. Those guys are good enough to do that. Even if their stuff moves off the plate it's good enough that most hitters won't hit it. Key idea: you don't have to hit the black every time---just as a tennis player doesn't have to hit the lines to win a point.

And that's how I'd explain it.

Is it really a baserunning snafu or just a unfortunately placed hit? Did anybody goof up in the double steal?

Yep, just poor luck. Can't blame Dusty for that one either. It was actually a nice time to try one IMO.

Not sure this was bad baserunning. Just this team's new strategy. It was agressive baserunning with both runners moving before the pitch. A soft liner to SS and the triple plauy was a certainty. If the runners aren't going on the pitch, its one out.

That's my big problem with building an offense around the running game. Getting on base is hard enough. When you avoid making an out, why give the defense a second chance to get you on the bases?

Yeah it seems like "aggressive baserunning" is one of the most difficult things in baseball to get right ... in other words to make it a clear positive and not an overall detriment to the success of your club.

It works better when you get on base a lot. Funny how that works. Squandering your few opportunities with outs on the bases is just compounding a big problem.

Very nice outing for Harrang. I would have liked to have seen us capitalize on some of those other baserunners, but a complete game shutout is nice. The triple play was on an aggressive play and I'll take that in any winning effort. EE and Phillips are still looking good and Taveras had another good game.

One game at a time.

It's amazing to see FCB do the old "dine and dash" or, in this case, crap on Harang and then disappear when Harang ends up pitching well.

And for those not keepng score, 5 of Harang's K's were agains LH hitters.

I still don't get the lefty comment. For his career, Harang has K'd 19.4% of righties he's faced and 19.6% of the lefties he's faced!?!

Great game for Aaron Harang. It was as pretty of a three hitter as I've ever seen.

Harang anchors this pitching staff. In his two starts, he's given up 1 run and only 10 hits (14 innings). The rest of the staff has been horrible--16+ innings allowing 22 hits and 14 runs! On a team that will be challenged for getting runs, we have to have good pitching and so far only Harang has produced among the starters.

Excellent start by Harang. Big win for the Reds.

It shouldn't have been that close. The Reds blew too many scoring opportunities.

Bruce is struggling right now, but he'll be fine, IMO. I remember he started out very slow during the spring and then turned it on.

I haven't read the whole game thread, but were folks blaming EE? I thought that's one of those plays that happen in Little League and all the kids cry because they don't know what happened. It happens. You run and the ball is lined or looped and you're toast.

Pirates hitters touched star in training Johnny Cueto for 5 runs yesterday and 2 others for 5 more. Let's give Aaron some credit here.

I think the bigger story is this offense's performance vs a dubious pitcher (Snell). He imploded last year. His command left him. And so far this year he has an ERA over 7, and a Whip of 2.00.

Thank God for 1st innings - where we seem to do most of our damage. After that? Phftt!

The Reds begin a 10 game road trip tomorrow night - three in Milwaukee, four in Houston, and three in Chicago. The goal should be a .500 road trip. A .500 road trip would put the Reds at 7-8 when they return home on April 24th vs the Braves. Anything better than .500 would be a huge plus.

Wow, I just finished watching the game on DVR. I almost just decided to check the score to see who won and not watch it, that would have been a poor choice.

Since Harang is from San Diego, like Ron Burgundy, I think that Bill Kurtis would say something like this:

His name was Aaron Harang. He was like a walking god among mere mortals. He had a breaking ball that could make even the fiercest of hitters fall to their knees in despair and mechanics so fine they made Nolan Ryan look like Tim Lincecum. In other words, Aaron Harang was the balls.

Jun 13 CIN/BOS W,3-1 7.0-IP 4-H 1-R 1-ER 0-BB 7-K 0-HR

Sep 12 CIN/ARI L,2-3 7.0-IP 4-H 1-R 0-ER 1-BB 4-K 0-HR

Sep 17 CIN/STL W,3-0 9.0-Ip 6-H 0-R 0-ER 0-BB 4-K 0-HR

Those are three "great" starts well within the calendar year. There are several other very good starts, but you said "great" so I limited it to that.

Come on guys it was Easter, most any other day you probably have a point, but FCB's never struck me as someone to shy away from an argument (even at a moment when his side is looking particularly bad).

PS - A career first for me in defending FCB.

Last season has to factor into Harang's projected performance going forward.... Harang doesn't get an '08 mulligan because of Dusty. Last season is part of his performance history and it colors what to expect from him going forward.

That said, I think the argument is that you're dramatically over-correcting in response to last season.

Lots of guys find the Lord after the All-Star break. I like true believers, hotheads, and long scoreless streaks.

Truth be told, I don't blame everything on the players, as I genuinely believe there is next to no pressure to actually perform as a Cincinnati Red.
