Beautiful 10 pitch at bat by Votto. Watching on Gameday, and every pitch near the zone he fouled off, while all the clear 'balls' he took. Finally made Gallardo throw one down the middle, which he drove the other way to the warning track in left.

That knid of hitting will wear a pitcher out. BTW, Gallardo at 100 pitches after five....

I think command issues are mostly to blame. I don't think he'd have faired better pitching to the early 70's version of Johnny Bench.

I agree. It's mental. Not the catcher. Although, if Ramon knew him better he'd go out and break his thought process and just get him to throw instead of overthinking. Because that's what it seems like he's doing...too much thinking.

This game is only in the fifth. Yikes. You're probably looking at two basement dwelling clubs here, so sloppy games are the order of the day.

You do know they've played 6 games? This isn't like the NFL you can lose the first 10 and still be in the playoff race by the end of the year.

Nothing you can do about that -- pitch down in the zone and the hitter just gives it the Tiger Woods special out of the park.

The #1 pitcher of a team does not usally pitch against the other teams#1 pitcher, as it gets mixes up pretty quicky.

Just watch a few games and it becomes pretty obvious.

Otherwise, you'd see the average winning record of # 1 pitchers at around .500.

Days off even out. I certainly agree that it doesn't always align this way, but it does more than you think. I remember last year Harang faced Zambrano like three times...and Webb. Also remember that after the all star break, most managers restart with their #1s again.

Man does Alex G look lost at the plate. He didn't get a ton of swings in the spring, and is sure to be rusty from a year off to boot. I sure wouldn't mind seeing Janish get some starts while Alex G takes extra time off the tee and in BP to try and find some rhythm to his swing and approach.

It's an old wives tale. We are already off line, with skipping Owings.

It\s not enough to say that it doesn't always aling that way, as that suggest that it's about 80%.

It it was anyway close to being true, #1 starters would be posting .500 records by the bucket full. And they don't.

Harang's opposing starters in 2008: From ESPN's web site (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/gamelog?playerId=5181&year=2008)

3/31 Brandon Webb (#1)
4/5 Adam Eaton
4/10 Carlos Villanueva
4/15 Ryan Dempster
4/20 Yovani Gallardo
4/25 Jonathan Sanchez
4/30 Brandon Looper
5/6 Carlos Zambrano (#1)
5/12 Burke Badenhop
5/17 Fausto Carmona
5/22 Randy Wolfe
5/25 Relief appearance
5/29 Phil Dumatrait
6/3 Adam Eaton
6/8 Ryan Tucker
6/13 Justin Masterson
6/19 Eric Stults
6/25 Roy Halladay (#1)
6/30 Paul Maholm (#1)
7/8 Ryan Dempster

Harang then on the DL till August, where clearly there would be no pattern of going against a #1 guy.

8/10 Wandy Rodriguez
8/16 Joel Pineiro
8/22 Livian Hernandez
8/28 Brandon Backe
9/2 Ian Snell
9/7 Sean Marshall
9/12 Brandon Webb (#1)
9/17 Todd Wellemeyer
9/22 Ricky Nolasco (#1?)
9/27 Todd Wellemeyer

So in 2008, that means Harang faced six pitchers who were arguably their teams #1 guy, out of 29 starts. That is not at all what I expected...so I retract the argument.
