From Fay: Jay Bruce was scratched from Saturday's line with a sore right hand. It's been bothering him since he was hit by a pitch by Yovani Gallardo on Monday.

Laynce Nix will start in right and bat sixth.

Man! Talk about some bad luck this inning. A bunch of bloop, seeing eye singles. Gets the job done though.

And that was a terrible throw to home by Hairston who fields the ball behind the SS, very shallow. Yet still throws it wide. A good throw would have saved a run.

Good grief this is pathetic. This guy is not that good against anybody.

Overall, he's 1-2 vs the Reds, with a 4.24 ERA. But in the past two seasons, Rodriguez has a 2.96 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 29 starts at home.

Could be a tough luck night for Aaron if this offesne doesn't come through. But they did this to him last season also - no run support.

True. But 2 of those runs were via freak, seeing eye singles. Yeah, I know they still count, but it has to be frustrating to see that kind of tough luck. Plus having a gamey armed LFer, who fields a shallow hit ball, and can't throw out a Carlos Lee.

There's honestly no excuse for Nix to be up in that spot. For one thing, he should never be in the starting line-up against a lefty anyways. Just a horrible match-up. It's frustrating because its such an easy hole to fill. You just have to have a better RH option that Darnell McDonald. Instead, as much as I like Nix, he was completely overmatched in what might be our only chance of the night.

Nobody's going to be successful with Harang on the mound. However, I would have not wasted the resources on him and went with Hanagan. Hernandez has not shown himself to be better IMO. Not that that switch makes this team a contender.

When you hit .208 as a team, and combine it with a non-existent slugging%, it's pretty much immaterial how effective your starting pitchers are on any given night. The only early positives for this offense are that they can't stay this bad (can they?), and that there has been an increased Walk rate from a few unlikely candidates. Let's hope the increased BBs are indicative of an improved plate approach, rather than simply a side-effect of playing the walk-happy Brewers' staff. It's a hard offense to watch, with nowhere to go but up.

If Walt had landed us the proper veteran RHH power bat for LF, and a new SS, how different might things have looked? Dye's 1100OPS, and Escobar's 900+OPS to-date would have looked pretty good at the top of the order, but 'Wait' Jocketty went a much different route.

I totally agree. I'll go a step farther. This team is impossible to watch right now. Tonight, I just refused to get frustrated. After I saw that Harang was going to allow a bunch of runs, I just checked the score a few times. Yes, it's good to have pitching and defense, but without offense, your pitching has to be so good that 6 or 7 hits aren't going to do it (and a few runs).

The Dye trade should have been made even if they did want Homer (whom I firmly believe will never amount to much). It would have made a differene, but a better SS might have made more (providing the new SS could hit).

When the attendance drops below 10K on a lot of nights as the Reds go far south of .500, it will be because of boredom. Even if you win every game 2-1 or 3-2, watching this offense is certainly not entertainment. It's torture.

They may get frustrated and decide to hack (more likely BP than Edwin) but over time a hacking approach well net a lower production. It may take a little time for pitchers to realize that the "new" Brandon won't get himself out on a pitchers pitch and that he's willing to take a walk, but it will happen and they'll have to start throwing him strikes. If they don't he can lead the league in walks, pounce on the few meatballs he gets and be a very valuable offensive player.

I'm probably one of the biggest Dunn supporters here and I couldn't agree more. I think a lot of people predicted this less than good offense last season. They really needed to replace Dunn's production and they didn't do that.

Context after 10 games:

Offense: ranked 13th in NL, 27th in mlb (3.8 R/G)

Defense: ranked 11th in NL, 18th in mlb (5.1 R/G)

actual W-L: 5-5
pythag W-L: 4-6

I think the Reds have come out of the shoot being roughly similar to the horse that they have been projected to be (http://www.redszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74707&highlight=projected+reds): a roughly average pitching staff and a below average offense.

I think some hope is offered by the notion that while the BB% for EE and Phillips would seem to be in for a steep correction, they're also better hitters than their first ten games (expect a regression there too!). Same thing with Bruce.

Gonzo and Ramon are question marks, really, I think, but, RH still will be better than his first 10 games even assuming his decline over the last few years is real.

Votto is really the only guy to expect a significant regression from offensively.

Pitching-wise, Volquez is going to be better, at least there isn't a real reason to expect his control/stuff is going all Dontrelle (a guy who clearly was tracking toward doomsday before his great bang). It's reasonable at least to believe that the early control issues of Volquez, Arroyo, and Cueto will take care of itself. Based upon velocity/command/stuff, it appears that Harang's projection is a realistic one (i.e. he's not toast, just expect the normal effects of age)

Harang has to be the unluckiest pitcher in the game. The Reds offense has scored three runs in his three starts.

I agree that he doesn't get much support, but he pitched his way into that loss tonight. His stuff wasn't bad, he was hitting 91-92 pretty consistantly on Houston's gun, but his location stunk. They were hitting balls off him pretty consistantly and pretty solidly. Sure, some of them were seeing eye grounders, but still well struck.

As for the offense, yeah, they struggled but you've got to credit Wandy for that. That was the best I've ever seen him pitch BY FAR. He simply pounded the strike zone and his stuff had quite a bit of late movement. I've always known he had quality stuff, but he's also always been a bit of a head case. If you get him in trouble, he collapses...we just never got him into trouble. And he kept himself OUT of trouble by limiting the walks. That being said, the Reds still showed "fairly" good patience at the plate and took Wandy deep into counts...he just won those battles tonight.

Oh well, hopefully we'll still take 3 of 4.

And btw, I live about 40 minutes from Minute Maid and we left our house 2 1/2 hours prior to game time to see BP. LOL. It flooded worse in south Houston yesterday than it did during any hurricanes I've seen in the past 20 years here. We consistantly saw cars buried by water up to the middle of the windows. Crazy, CRAZY afternoon.

Combination of our offense and the gem thrown by Wandy. I'm not sure the best offense in the bigs would've gotten much done on him last night. I wasn't blaming Aaron for the loss, just saying that he wasn't exempt from any of the blame. He wasn't "on" last night, that's all.

It's hard to argue that it wasn't on the offense today. Still, it doesn't help that we have two of the worst relievers in baseball (Burton and Lincoln) getting as many innings as they've gotten.
