I notice both McDonald and Janish are in the lineup and also notice they have averages higher than the ones they are replacing. Should be interesting to see how this turns out.

Guys, hopefully the reds knock the astros back to whatever grungy part of the universe that they originally came from early and often. However, worst case scenario we get out of Houstan with a split.

Lets sit back and enjoy the game and while we're at it, lets let the mods enjoy it too....

On paper, I'd predict that this Reds lineup will have a tough time scoring.

On the other hand, the Astros really only have one tough lefty in the lineup for Arroyo to deal with...

Lead off single for Willy T.

Taveras tries to lay down a bunt...pops it up. I haven't been very impressed with his ability to lay down bunts. Seems pretty erratic with it

Grounds a single up the middle though. :O)

So far Gamecenter is showing Hampton's pitches rangeing from 82-87. In fact they are listing many of them as changeups. IMO, that's because they are so slow that they are not changeups, simply slow pitches.

Any reading on the speed that Hampton's throwing on TV?

Pence with sharp ground ball with eyes. Single to left
Blum single down right field line, Pence advances to third.

Hampton pitching

Hairston out on a soft liner to Tejada

Phillips golfing on the slider too...(not all the Reds here...Hampton's got a good one)...Hampton squeezed there...grounder to pitcher.

Arroyo's all over the place in terms of speed...as usual. Kind of hard to gauge him. But he's mixing his speeds and locations very well and he's getting his breakers over for strikes.

EE is taking his time on the throws. Earlier he missed getting a DP because he didn't rush his throw. Still, he got the force comfortably with a good throw. Impressed with his defense so far.

For those not watching the FSN "feed", not only did the camera pan to the high fly by focusing on the Crawford boxes, you never did see the ball get caught by Hairston, but you did see the ball strangely appear in the screen as it fell into the LF stands. Which is where Hairston apparently tossed it after he caught it.

F- to FSN for that whole sequence.

And, defensively, this team seems different with Janish out there. No knock on Gonzo who has been a good shortstop for years, but Janish is a really good defensive shortstop.

Certainly agree with the last part. As for the first part, I think EE's defense has been noticeably better in '09. And it wasn't remarked upon a ton, but that was a really nice and deft play EE had in the 8th last night to turn the 5-3 DP and get the Reds and Weathers out of trouble. Major league quality play.

Bottom of 5th. 2-1 Reds

Arroyo pitching

Blum leads off with a sharp single to right. He's really been swinging a hot bat lately.
Pudge with a soft flyout to McDonald. 1 down. Blum holds.
Bourn up...infield at DP depth...really nice curve from bronson...K's swinging. Nice work there.
Hampton with a hard hit ball to Edwin who throws out Blum at 2nd. 3 down.

Arroyo is cruising, but Hampton's making hitters look silly as we go along. Time to get to him!

Top of 6th. 2-1 Redlegs

Hampton pitching

Votto looking better this ab...staying back more...but still down on a soft grounder to Berkman.
Phillips out on grounder...a high throw made it interesting, but 2 down.
Encarnacion safe at first on sharp liner to Tejada who juggles it. Probably a single
McDonald up...Hampton starting to lose the zone a bit...Walks on 5 pitches. 1st & 2nd with 2 outs
Hanigan getting frozen on some nice pitches in this ab....K's swinging. 3 down.

2-1 Reds middle of 6

Berkman ... oh my. BIG dinger. 2-2. He just sat back on that curve and PUNISHED it...glad we turned that DP.

Hampton pitching

Janish leads off with another single on the first pitch. Gonzo should be watching his back. :O)

Taveras with a grounder up the middle...infield single as Tejada has no play. 1st & 3rd with 1 out.

Bottom of 7th. Reds up 4-3

Arroyo still in (good call IMO)

Blum with a soft single to right. 3 for 3. Still swinging a hot bat.
Pudge up...Bronson nearly picks off Blum with a nice quick throw...grounder into a 4-6-3, perfect. Nice pitch by Bronson. 2 down.
Bourn flies out to Hairston at the warning track.

4-3 Reds after 7. That should be it for Arroyo. The Astros are getting their timing down on his stuff.

Rhodes warming up now...MUCH better choice to replace Bronson.

Chuck Norris has nothing on Joey Votto!

I wish we had a cleanup hitter.

Arroyo indeed back to the mound. And immediately gives up yet another hit to Geoff Blum (Blum is now 3 for 3).

Blum single.

Bronson, thank you, but I've seen enough for tonight.

Time to pull Arroyo.

Three hits for Blum? Good grief.

Fourth hit in a row off of Arroyo. Rhodes is up in the pen.

The lefties are 6 for 11 against Bronson tonight...

Arroyo is only at 75 pitches, but the Astros clearly have him measured. Masset would be a nice choice up, given Masset's ability to throw hard, for a nice contrast from Arroyo.

2-1 count on Pudge.
