There was a great article in ESPN Insider on Brave's youngster CFer Schafer. He got popped, while in the minors, for using performance enhancers, and got a 50 day suspension. While out, it really got him to do some "soul searching" about why he played the game. Plus, some of the adult "mentors" re-entered his life and really helped him with an attitude adjustment. Just an all-around good article.

Marty commented that a plaque is waiting for Chipper in Cooperstown. Do you guys think it's a sure thing he gets in? I know he's a very good player...I'm just not sure I consider him a "great" player.

Offensively, he's a no brainer. His adjusted OPS+ puts him tied for 48th in MLB history. Career .955 OPS's simply don't grow on trees -- on a rate basis he's comparable to Michael Jack Schmidt (though he's 1300 PA behind him).

I've seen conflicting reports on his defensive value, ranging from absolute butcher to slightly above average.

On balance, that makes him a solid outer circle HOF in my book. Though the same could be said about Ron Santo, and he's still on the outside looking in. Combine that with the steroid era crap and the fact that he'll probably end up short of 500 HR and/or 3000 hits (he'd need to keep up his current pace for 5 more years, through age 41) and I think he's going to have a hard time getting in.
