Phillips still cleaning up! I think I'd rather have Janish batting cleanup right now honestly.

Matt700wlw

Dusty gets set on some things to the point of it being stupid....like Phillips in the 4 hole.

Sans Bruce, who probably doesn't need the added pressure of hitting cleanup, I'm not sure who Dusty can use. Votto can't hit everywhere unfortunately.

Reds Fanatic
04-25-2009, 02:07 PM
Hairston just got thrown out of the game. That call was horrible. A called 3rd stike that was not close when Arroyo's ball was a strike and it was a walk. Dusty just got tossed too.

Matt700wlw

a fiesty bunch, these Reds.

CTA513

_Sir_Charles_
04-25-2009, 02:08 PM
LOL. If you look at Gameday, not a single pitch to Hairston was in the zone. Not ONE of them.

Matt700wlw
04-25-2009, 02:08 PM
Dusty is still in the dugout :)

nate
04-25-2009, 02:08 PM

Why exactly should the Reds be headhunting?

_Sir_Charles_
04-25-2009, 02:21 PM
I'm waiting for a high FB that Hanigan ducks out of the way of. I can't find the youtube of that highschool battery that did that to the ump, but it might get the point across. (joking of course, but you get my point)

Reds Fanatic

Exactly, the only one to be mad at is the Ump right now. Escobar seemed to complain for no reason yesterday, but the plunking of Votto did seem intentional.

These umpires have been awful. Absolutely awful. The guy that umpired last night needs to be sent to the minors for a while. That 1-2 pitch on Shafer last night was clearly strike three.

Reds Fanatic
04-25-2009, 02:24 PM

Exactly, the only one to be mad at is the Ump right now. Escobar seemed to complain for no reason yesterday, but the plunking of Votto did seem intentional.

Concerning throwing Hairston out of the game, while the pitch may have been debatable (I tend to think it was a ball), every ump in the league is goiing to throw you out if you clearly get in his grill and then draw a line in the dirt demonstrating how far outside you thought the pitch was.... Hairston didn't give the ump a choice on that one....

Matt700wlw
04-25-2009, 02:26 PM
Arroyo seems to have settled down...now the Reds offense needs to get going.

Reds Fanatic

I agree. I'm not mad at the ump for tossing Hairston & Baker, I'm mad at him because of his unfair zone. The exact same pitch is a strike to Reds batters but a ball to Braves batters. Repeatedly.

Man, that strike 2 pitch to Diaz was a cartoon curve.

Reds Fanatic

nate

04-25-2009, 02:33 PM
Absolutely horrible call at third.....go Reds!

_Sir_Charles_

Wow. The Braves screw up getting Hanigan caught in a rundown and everyone is safe. Arroyo ends up on 2nd. Arroyo bunted in front of the plate. Ross throws to 3rd and somehow Hanigan beats the throw to 3rd on the rundown.

_Sir_Charles_
04-25-2009, 02:43 PM
I'm not one to normally complain about an ump, but this is simply ridiculous. All 3 of those called strikes to Votto were out of the zone. Heck, the pitch he called a ball was in the exact same spot as 2 of the "strikes". I've yet to see anything remotely close to that pitiful being called for the other team. Does this ump live in Georgia by any chance?

OnBaseMachine
04-25-2009, 02:43 PM
All they needed was two weak groundballs to make this a 6-4 ballgame and they couldn't even do that.

I'm so glad I decided to stay home instead of going to last night's and today's game.

That said, at what point do we start "playing the game the right way?"

Matt700wlw

I think part of the defensive inning Dickerson is having stems from the at bat he had in the last inning..... maybe a little bit of looking back when he should've been looking at the ball off the bat...

I'm an optimist...but I've got nothin'. 9-2 Braves after the 2 run jack to Escobar of all people.

Somebody should knock him down after a home run like that.

Okay, this annoys me. The Reds simply have no clue on how to use Herrera. You don't bring him in after Arroyo. You completely negate his effectiveness with his change of pace. After any other starter, sure...just not Arroyo.

Hopefully Danny suceeds despite the dumb move.

Wow..... as OBM said, in the span of 6 outs, the Reds went from two groundballs in the infield making it 6 to 4 to the keystone cops losing by a touchdown.

Truthfully even then Hanigan essentially ran himself into an out and got away with it.

Given the excitement generated by the road trip, this hasn't been the kind of series so far that you'd hope would reinforce the walk up numbers...

We need some late inning heroics..... ouch......Escobar makes it 9-2.

Yeah, I don't want to ever hear the Reds complain about poor attendance again. Everytime the Reds get a decent crowd, they go out and embarrass themselves. Maybe one of these days they'll actually try to improve the team. With this pitching staff, the Reds had a chance to add a bat and make this team a legit contender. Instead, they made excuses and stood pat.

I hate to keep being negative, but I could easily see the Reds finishing 1-5 on this homestand. They are well on their way to 0-2 today, and tomorrow Owings is going against Kenshin Kawakami, a guy the Reds have never seen before. Then the Astros roll into town with Oswalt, Wandy Rodriguez, and Paulino pitching.

Pinch hitting is pretty tough. Nix is something like an average major league bat who can play neutral defense in the corner outfield. I don't mind having him on the bench.

That's part of it. A lot of his value was in his supposed excellent CF defense. I don't know how well he plays in CF, but it is pretty clear that he's not an excellent defender in left.

Yep, but I don't see the Reds sitting Brandon, Edwin or Gonzo. Too much money invested there. Gonzo is coming around the past week. Not many hits, but he's making HARD contact. And his defense is coming around nicely. Brandon, no matter how bad he looks at the plate, he always still contributes with his glove. Edwin though....it's got to be getting close to decision time on Edwin. He's not hitting, he's not fielding, he doesn't even look like he's trying.

Adam has VERY limited experience in the OF. If we're gonna push someone off position, I'd be in favor of it being Edwin. We know we're going to have to make room in the IF in the next year or so anyway with our current prospect group and Edwin seems like the likely candidate. He certainly hasn't earned any favoritism based on his defense. Votto has. Brandon has. Gonzo has (maybe undeservedly).

As per usual, Phil. While the Bravos are considered inferior to us by many, they can hit and score runs. Though they didn't need much offense today (as most teams don't against the Reds), they poured it on against our expensive starter. All the while, we had trouble with fly balls and infield grounders. Perfect. If you ignore the problems of the club and "fix" them with bargain basement players from the minors or the trash bin, you get this kind of game. I'm still praying for 81-81.
