BP batting clean up is getting way too old this early in the season

I hope Cueto can build on his last start and Bruce/Votto continue their hitting. Good things can only come of it.

Matsui K's looking.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:16 PM
Borne w/ a double just off the tip of EdE's glove, down the line. Redskiller is up.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 07:16 PM
Bourn doubled. Not a bad pitch by Cueto, just a nice piece of hitting.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:17 PM
Redskiller is 11 for 66 on the season, including, shockingly, 3 games vs the Reds. But then again, he has played at GABP yet... :scared:

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:17 PM
2-2 on Redskiller...Cueto looking solid early on.

2-2 pitch was RIGHT onthe black, outside, but called a ball and Cueto gives him a BB.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 07:17 PM
The Astros are 15-1 in their last 16 games at GABP.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:19 PM
Cueto falls behind 1-0 on El Caballo (sp?) and gets him to ground into a tailor made 6-4-3.

Thru 0.5, 0-0 w/ the good guys coming up to bat!

reds44
04-27-2009, 07:21 PM
Even with the walk and double, Cueto looked good that inning. The pitch to Bourn wasn't bad and it looked like the 2-2 pitch to Berkman was strike 3.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:21 PM
I predict Dickerson w/ a 2-hit night tonight...even vs Roy O. Why not, right? :)

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:23 PM
WillyT one hops into a 5-3 GO.

Degenerate39
04-27-2009, 07:24 PM
I know Oswalt is tough but I really think Dickerson has to be sent down

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:24 PM
Great catch by a fan on a liner by Dickerson. Well done, sir!

That said, so far, 6 pitches, 6 strikes for Roy O and CD down swinging, and didn't look good doing it either. 13 K's in his last 20 AB's for CD. Rosales anyone? eek

Reds Fanatic
04-27-2009, 07:24 PM
13 Ks now for Dickerson in his last 20 ABs

Vottomatic groundout.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:26 PM
Joey Votto = good.

Not really news, just thought I'd throw it out there.

And just to leave Roy O over confident, Votto decides to ground out weakly, 4-3.

Thru 1, 0-0

HokieRed
04-27-2009, 07:26 PM
Rosales with a double and Bankston with a first inning jack. Hard to see how the status quo in Cinti can last much longer.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:28 PM
2nd pitch HAMMERED to the wall in LF, Dickerson picks it up quickly and guns down Miggy, easily, at 2B. Well done sir!

eta: Had him out at 2B by well over a step. Wasn't even close. he might be struggling at the plate, but  on his defense tonight!

Let's go Reds. Thanks for the PBP.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 07:37 PM
Phillips grounded out.

Bruce lines out to center. Hit it hard but right at Bourn.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:37 PM
BP with a, get this, GO 4-3.

Then Bruce stings a liner to straight away CF, but right at'em, 2 down.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 07:38 PM
BTW, this ump has a very tight strikezone. Cueto was squeezed on what should have been strike three to Berkman, and Oswalt has been squeezed on a couple pitches too.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:38 PM
EdE quickly falls behind 0-2, but holds back on a close one, up and away. 1-2.

Then he 2-hops down to Miggy, 3 down. *sigh*.

Well, at least it's moving along quickly!

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 07:40 PM
The Reds are going to need Cueto to pitch as well as he did in his last start because Oswalt is dominating so far tonight.

BCubb2003
04-27-2009, 07:40 PM
BTW, this ump has a very tight strikezone. Cueto was squeezed on what should have been strike three to Berkman, and Oswalt has been squeezed on a couple pitches too.

I'm beginning to think baseball has a tight strike zone.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:40 PM
Thru 2 innings, the pitch counts for both sides in this titanic struggle:

Roy O: 23 (16 strikes)

Cueto: 33 (21 strikes)

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:42 PM
Wow, all kidding aside, yeah, squeezed is being kind.

From 1-2, to full count on Pudge and he should have K'd twice. Then he fouls one off.

another foul...

Then he hits a liner scorched over Bruce's head, but Jay reaches up, sideways and is able to put the leather on it. Nice play. Not a GREAT play, but a tough catch nonetheless.

1 down for Roy O.

Reds Fanatic
04-27-2009, 07:43 PM

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 07:44 PM
Nice catch by Bruce after he had Pudge struckout.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:45 PM
Roy O grounds one right back up the middle next to Cueto's feet, but BP ranges wide behind the bag and throws him out, 2 down for Kaz.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:46 PM
Cueto is pitching quite well tonight, but he's not getting many 1st pitch strikes.

That said, on a 1-1 pitch, Matsui (mini-Godzilla?) hits one solidly on the ground past Votto for a single.

Bourn up, 2 down, 1 on.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:47 PM
When Houston is making contact, about half the hits are hit pretty doggone hard.

Bourn w/ a harmless 4-3 GO.

Thru 2.5, 0-0

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 07:51 PM
Ramon Hernandez just took an 0-2 fastball right on the outside corner...and the ump called it a ball.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:51 PM
Well, the ump is squeezing both, equally, though. The 1-2 pitch to Ramon, the Latin Lover, was def. a strike on the outside corner, but called a ball.

Roy O is pumping in strikes, for sure tonight. Just wait for one, Boys!

Finally, a 6-3 GO on a 2 hopper by the Latin Lover. 1 down. AGon up.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:53 PM
AGon flails at the first pitch, then fouls the next off to fall behind 0-2, then chops one to the area the is between 3B and SS...Blum was gonna play it, called off by Miggy, then Miggy can't get it out of his glove, double clutches and AGon beats it out!

Our first hit!

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:55 PM
Cueto lays down a sacrifice, but it trickles foul down the 1B line. Then he takes a ball...1-1.

Then he foul tips the next one off...so much for the sacrifice.

Instead, he chops one down to Miggy for a 6-4-3 DP and that's the inning folks.

Also, Pudge is hurt...will update when we know more.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 07:55 PM
Berkman/Lee/Tejada due up for the Astros. Big inning here for Johnny.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 07:58 PM
Ok updated on Pudge.

Cueto's bat when he let it go, fell onto the back of his foot/ankle area. Looked like it hurt like a...well, it didn't tickle I'd guess.

He ended up walking off the field and is laughing in the dugout, so I guess he's fine.

And Cueto starts out Redskiller w/ another first pitch ball. Ugh.

2-0 now on him.

Redskiller chases one down and away and fouls it off, 2-1. Then Cueto pumps in a strike to even the count. 2-2.

SIT DOWN sir, right on the black at the knees, outside corner. 1 down!

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:02 PM
Cueto starts El Caballo (someone wanna spell that for me?), with a curve for strike one, then fouls off strike two, then a ball high.

Then Lee makes a really loud, really far strike.

Cueto seems pretty in control of things tonight.

Lee flies out harmlessly F8. 2 down.

Cueto just looking really sharp. Definitely carrying over from last game.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:02 PM
Wow, Dickerson doing GREAT in LF!

Cueto with a good pitch down below the knees, Miggy does down to get it and laces a SHOT into the gap in LCF, but Dickerson runs his butt off and slides behind it to keep it from going to the wall and makes Miggy slam on the brakes and kept him to a single. You won't see it on webgems, but the crowd game him a loud applause for the play. Really was great.

Great play.

Next pitch, EdE bobbles one and everyone is safe (ruled a hit).

1 and 2nd, 2 down.

Reds Fanatic
04-27-2009, 08:03 PM
Another nice defensive play by Dickerson to cut that off and hold it to a single.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 08:04 PM
Tejada ain't half the hitter he used to be but he still hits well against the Reds.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 08:05 PM
Error on EdE to extend the inning. Sigh.

GAC
04-27-2009, 08:05 PM
Good ol' EE.

I hate it when our defense puts a sound pitching effort at jeopardy. But we got out of it.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:06 PM
Then Cueto gets Blum to ground out weakly to 1B, flip to Cueto and he gets out the inning.

Good pitching that inning by Cueto, just good hitting my Miggy and even better defense by Dickerson!

thru 3.5 0-0.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 08:07 PM
If EdE makes that play, the Astros have their 7-8-9 up in the 5th inning. Instead they'll have their 8-9-1.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 08:07 PM
I have been very unimpressed with Taveras' bunting ability so far. Has he gotten a bunt hit yet?

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:08 PM
Willy T lays down the first pitch, by bunting, and just puts it in front of the plate just a foot short or so and Pudge hustles and makes a hard, fast throw to barely get WillyT. 1 down.

Then Dickerson lines one past Kaz into RF for a single. Good to see

Redhook
04-27-2009, 08:09 PM
I have been very unimpressed with Taveras' bunting ability so far. Has he gotten a bunt hit yet?

I'm not sure about the answer, but wow is he fast. Can't hit for squat but it's actually fun watching him run.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:09 PM
Votto grounds to Redskiller sharply, throw to 2nd and Miggy DROPS IT! Everyone is safe, but he and Dickerson collide and bump heads...both still down...and being checked out by trainers from both sides.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 08:09 PM
Ouch. That had to hurt. Hopefully Dickerson and Tejada are OK.

Reds Fanatic

That is an ugly collison between Dickerson and Tejada as they collide head to head at 2nd.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:10 PM
And odd scene at 2nd right now...both guys on a knee and both trainers looking each over and it looks more like a boxing ring between rounds right now. I think they're both ok, but definitely have a face ache.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:11 PM
Both are staying in the game cuz they're hockey pla....wait...nm....

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:11 PM
1st and 2nd, 1 out for BP. Good time to wake up, Brandon, please?

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:11 PM
1st pitch is hacktastic and fouls it off.

I think this would be a good time for a double steal imo.

Strike two and Brandon was nowhere near that slider, down and away. 0-2.

Up and away 1-2.

They showed the highlight of Dunn stealing home back in '04 and laying out the catcher. Nice :)

2-2

I still think double steal here...

Jesus...

DP for BP 6-4-3.

For a 'small ball' team, they sure don't steal or try to, too often, eh? I mean come on guys...you JUST KNEW the DP was coming. *sigh*

Thru 4, 0-0.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 08:14 PM
So predictable. Phillips grounds into a doubleplay. Terrible. Move him to 7th where he belongs.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:16 PM
Roy O: 40 (29 strikes)

Cuet O: 68 (43 strikes)

5 hits, 1 error for the 'stros, 2 hits no errors (although one of the 'stros hits should have been an error on EdE) for the Reds.

OnBaseMachine
04-27-2009, 08:16 PM
You can see it coming every time. Runners on, Phillips up = automatic doubleplay. A double steal there would have been nice.

Homer Bailey
04-27-2009, 08:17 PM
Can't wait til we pay BP $12 mil a year.

The shame is I would love BP if he hit 6th, but we have the only manager in the world that would hit him 4.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:17 PM
Get ahead curve by Cueto on Pudge, 0-1.

Then 1-1, the lined to Willy T, 1 down F8.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:18 PM
Roy O with a dying quail in shallow RCF...both WillyT and Bruce converging, and Bruce gets it on a one-hop... mini-Godzilla up...1 down, 1 on.

Homer Bailey
04-27-2009, 08:19 PM
It's crazy how predictable that was. I've never seen a player as fast as BP ground into so many DP's

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:20 PM
At least Cueto is throwing more 1st pitch strikes now...good sign.

Then 1-1, then Kaz fouls off strike two...then up and away for make the count 2-2...

same area, full count.

Sick breakingball there! K. 2 down!

SMcGavin

Watching Cueto pitch is fun. Watching Brandon Phillips hit, not so much.

SirFelixCat
04-27-2009, 08:22 PM
Another 1st pitch strike for Cueto (3 for 3 this inning).

Then a nice block on a pitch in the dirt by the Latin Lover...then inside, 2-1 on Bourn.

Fouls the next one off, 2-2.

Another sick breaking ball down and in for the swinging K. Cueto is PITCHING very well. Not just throwing. Just like his last start. Well done, son!

Unbelievable. Encarnacion swings at the first pitch which was outside and at the ankles. Hit the ball maybe six inches. Inning over.

It's to send him to the bench for a little while and call up Rosales. I love the guy, but he's absolutely killing the team right now. A huge situation like that and he swings at the first pitch, which was NO where near a strike. Just an awful atbat.

Reds made some nice defensive plays tonight.

EE came up with 2 outs & the bases juiced. He hit a ball about 6 inches. Swung at the first pitch I believe. PLEASE give him a couple of days off.

The 9th was a bit inevitable. Bloop hit. Grounder past EE. then a hard hit double. tough to win when you score only 1 run.

Sometimes I wonder if the Reds even scout the opposition before playing them. Take the 9th inning for instance. Miguel Tejada and Hunter Pence, especially Pence, are both suckers for the slider down and away. Very rarely do they lay off that pitch. So in the 9th inning, Cordero had a 1-2 count on Tejada. A perfect chance to bury him with a slider down and away. Instead, Cordero throws a fastball and Tejada pulls it into left field for a single. Hunter Pence stepped in, Cordero quickly got ahead 0-2. Again, a perfect time to throw the slider down and away. Pence is an absolute sucker for that pitch. Instead, Cordero throws a fastball and Pence bangs it into right field for a 2-run double. I don't get it. A quality slider to both of those guys probably results in a strikeout or weak contact.

You have to wonder. Witness this. Over the last ten yars, hitters who have weaknesses have never been exploited by the Reds while our hitters are pounded in areas where they have little success. I used to think that Reds pitchers and hitters were just dumb, but it's continued through four managers (Boone, Miley, Narron and Baker) and there seems to be no end. In the meantime, opposing pitchers seem to know the weaknesses of our hitters. Maybe it's scouting, but it's more likely a lack of talent, and that's the saddest statement of all.

I don't disagree that Reds' pitchers often appear as though they're winging it. But in the case of Cordero, I genuinely think he doesn't know where the ball is going the vast majority of the time.

The presence of EdE and Phillips in this lineup right now would hurt an otherwise blazing hot offense; they are beyond drags on the offense--it is becoming almost absurd. Replacing the two of them with replacement hitters would greatly brace up the offense right now. They wouldn't be great, but they wouldn't be an almost-intentional-looking scuttling of the offense by EdE and Phillips.

I couldn't agree more, he seems to have an idea but the way he buries so many sliders in the dirt, you'd think he would just make an slight adjustment, but he can't seem to help himself.

Also can't help that your worst hitter's bat 4th and 6th. Why should anyone pitch to bruce, the guy ahead isn't likely to he on base and the guy behind can't hit anything right now.

Couldn't agree more. Having the two coldest hitters batting 4th and 6th is asking to lose. I know Dusty's hands are tied since he probably thinks he doesn't have any other options. To me he seems like the kind of guy that doesn't want to admit when hes wrong (Corey Patterson). Dusty has to do something with this line up and he has to do it now.
