Awful start for the Reds. Matsui singled, stole second. Bourn hit a routine groundball to Votto. He botched the grounder, then threw wildly to Harang allowing Bourn to score. Jeez.

Just out of curiosity, anybody know who's doing the play by play with Marty? Is that Kelch from last year?

Reds Fanatic

The first up till now:

Matsui singles, steals 2nd
Bourn reaches on a bad throwing error on Votto. 1-0 Astros
Berkman and Lee fly out to center.
Bourn steals 2nd. Astros are stealing easily against Harang
Tejada grounds out. 1-0 Astros mid 1st.

The cosmos was so thrown off by the delayed game thread that Joey Votto committed a double error that allowed Houston to take a 1-0 lead.

I guess they are ruling that he would have scored from third on the next batter or two. But it was a clear bobble that let Bourn on, and a throw away on the same play that let Matsui score on the play.

That first inning was a microsopic look at the 2009 Reds so far. The misplays cost the Reds a run in the top half. In the bottom, the Reds get the first two on, hit into a DP, get a double and a weak groundout.

I don't know why I bother. Unless the starter allows less than 2 runs, this team will lose. I guess that's what happens when you lose a third baseman and replace him in the lineup with a career minor leaguer. The Reds always seem to have one "veteran" reliever each year - sometimes more than one reliever - who is a microcosm of their season.

Majewski and Coffey in 2008
Saarloos, Stanton, Coffey and Majewski in 2007
Hammond and White in 2006

It goes on and on and on ... and this year Mike Lincoln really wants that award.

Remember that time when we won by all those runs? This is like that only opposite.

This team--organization?--needs an exorcism.

it's what happens when you don't understand how runs are created.

Is it me or is it Mr. Jocketty? :)

I guess on the bright side, despite having a bad homestand, the Reds can still have a winning April if they beat the Astros on Wednesday night.

Yes, and that's a start. But my frustrtion level is getting to the point where I just can't watch. For the first time since I was...heck I don't know how young (maybe 6?), I could care less about watching the Reds. I hate that. Even in those awful years where we lost and lost and lost, I still watched every game. Now, this offense is so frustrating, i cannot watch. It's incompetence at its highest level. I can't take it. Seeing Hariston out there when I know he'll bomb this year, watching Phillips hack just hacks me off so much, watching Edwin just flog away just made me want to clean the garage (and maybe he was hurt and if so, I apologize), and seeing McDonald on this team--even on the bench makes my blood boil.

And yet, we're still at .500 (until tomorrow) and maybe better after tomorrow night (or not). Regardless, this is the most boring team this franchise has fielded since 1982. You may like pitching and defense, but this team is a horrible defensive team and the pitching is spotty at best. And the hitting sucks.

I hope for better, but even if they finish 82-80, they will be hard to watch all year. And when the seats are empty for most of the year and they say, "but we had a winning record," I hope they realize that winning fills the seats, but you have to generate some excitement to keep them coming back. And this team generates little excitement.

You echo my thoughts exactly.

I took my son to a game Friday to the new Huntington Park to watch the Clippers. It's a beautiful park and I had just as much fun walking around and enjoying the sights an sounds of the game with my boy as I do at GABP. And all at more than half the price and 100 miles closer to home. I usually venture down I-71 to GABP 4-5 times a year, but I don't know now. Something about this club just doesn't do it for me. I see Dunn (my son's favorite player) tearing the cover off the ball in Washington and here we are (like most of us knew we'd be) with this hideous offense. I enjoy watching Votto turn into a star and Bruce and Cueto mature, but everything else is just so frustrating. With the exception of tonight's game, it's been almost unbearable to watch Brandon Phillips at the plate. And he hits cleanup. Same with Edwin. I'm tired of defending him. He is what he is, which is average and it appears he's already hit his ceiling. This team makes stupid base-running mistakes. Plays horrible defense and with the exception of Votto, can't hit it's way out of a wet paper bag.

The thing is that 10-11 or 11-10 doesn't look too bad, but you watch and you realize that this team is way worse than it's record. Pythag has them at 8-12, but they even seem way worse than that. I don't know, maybe I'm just getting old and cranky, but I find myself looking for other things to do with my time. It's not a conscious decision. I just find that I'm not enjoying following this club like I used too.

At least my wife and I spend a little more time together. She loves that I watch more Dancing with the Stars with her now. In the past, I'd be in another room not missing one pitch of a Reds game. As I said, maybe I'm just getting old.

I still care about the Reds, but I feel like I'm watching the game on an old black-and-white, becobwebbed TV. There's a marked distance in my emotional investment.

Once the other team gets to 2 runs I know I'm good to find something else to watch.

The offense has been bad, no doubt. What's scary though is that I really don't think the other shoe has dropped with this pitching staff. I think they are due, sadly, for a correction (Harang and Arroyo no longer K batters, Volquez's control has been and probably will be a continual problem, Owings looks pretty flimsy). (And the offense for only a modest improvement). Both will be in the bottom third of the league--but more important, irrelevant.

Same here.

I missed the first two weeks of the season because of vacation and a week of recovery and it didn't bother me in the slightest.

That's sad.
