View Full Version : Least Favorite Beer

I really enjoy reading through the favorite beer thread, so I thought I'd start one for our least favorite. Thought about calling it the worst beer, but that's too subjective and we all have different tastes.

I'll start off with my least favorite. Hands down, the absolute nastiest beer I've ever tasted. I normally like most of the cheaper nostalgic beers, but there is a reason why you can get Rhinelander 6-packs at the Liquor Barn for a total of $2.49 (up from $1.99 just a few months ago). Is there anyone here who has a liking for this swill?

This thread is blasphemy, jimbo.

Though I did have some utter swill not long ago, just wish I could recall what it was called. Weirdly designed silver can is all I remember. I guess it was so awful, I successfully blocked it out of my mind. Which goes to show the beer couldn't have been too good for it to keep my subsconscious working. Hah.

Old Dutch hands down.

Got a case for $7 (long necks) at a dorm party at Ashland college. The stuff was sewage.

There was a locally brewed beer in the Shenandoah Valley when I was in college called Break Beer. It went for $4 (four!) a case and tasted like liquid metallic fruitcake - repulsive. My friends bought 20-some cases, threw a party and as soon as the partygoers tasted the beer, they left. They had about 19 cases left over so they poured it down the dorm hall and did "beer slides" the rest of the night.

Ah, college.

As for the name-brand beers, I find Coors Light disgusting.

You think that is blasphemy, check out my answer - all of them.

Granted, I have not exactly tried a lot of varieties, but the few I tried just do not suit my taste buds. I just do not like beer, as un-American and un-manly as that may seem. I don't know why, but that' just the way it is, I guess.

(I'm not much into any kind of alcohol, for that matter.)

Honestly, I could drink any beer you hand to me. There are some brands that I prefer over others and some that I typically don't buy but overall I can drink pretty much anything. Picking a least favorite would be awfully difficult.

I always felt the same until I tried Rhinelander. I just can't finish an entire can of it.

Referring to your avatar, my friend and I bought a couple of cases of Old Style over the weekend in Lexington. We always buy some when we are down there.

Some of the best beer I've ever had and some of the worst beer I've ever had has been beer I've made myself. Nothing's worse than tasting a batch of beer you've spend the past month laboring over only to find out it's gone south.

Of the store-bought varieties, I've never been a fan of beers that use a lot of corn as a filler. I always associate Rolling Rock as a "corny" beer.

Worst beer ever though had to be the case of Schaefer Light we stole from the garage of a friend's dad. Warm, crappy beer is pretty disgusting.

Aside from warm beer, the worst beer I've had is a beer I had in college called "Glacier Bay." I thought I'd mentioned it before but a search turned up nothing. Anyhow, it was like $5 a 12-pack and came in bottles. The bottles never had the label on straight. The bottom of each bottle was recessed so you could pop open a "fresh" one with your empty.

The "day after" was not a pretty thing.

Budweiser pure and simple. For some reason that stuff burns my throat. I can't finish a can of it.
I remember a gig where the club owner was so proud when he offered us Bud, thinking it was better than the usual swill we got. I think we drank 3 and one of the guys in the band went to the liquor store down the way and got us a 12 of PBR.
Iron City is foul too.

Yes, it's a beer past it's prime, crafted more in mid century palettes. I can barely get one down, Budweiser of course kicked their ads up mightily in the 70's and Miller swung there ad dollars to Lite and the High Life vanished for a long time, only to be brought back as retro answer to the questionable reemergence of the dreaded PBR.

Blatz was the poor boy beer in Milwaukee compared to PBR and Miller, PBR bought them years ago and Miller now brews both (making the founders roll in their grave no doubt) , Blatz is pretty regional though.

I can no longer drink alcohol for health reasons but was a beer lover in the past. My least favorite macro brewed beers have always been made by Miller. I second the comments about corn and cereal fillers--yuck! After spending a lot of time in the English countryside sampling local brews it was really hard to find any bottled beer that truly satisfied me. Luckily--or unluckily--I don't have that problem anymore. :(

Hempen Ale was a specialty beer I was never fond of. Beer made with denatured hemp seeds in an attempt to cash in on the "legalize it" movement. The hemp seeds seemed to give the beer an astringent unpleasant bitter taste that would ruin the nice bitterness of the hops, in my opinion.

I didn't really mind the actual chili in the beer as much as the odd, chemical taste of the beer itself. I had forgotten about that horrible beer.

I love MGD & MGD 64 but Miller Lite I cannot stand, unless its free of course.

Olympia was pretty horrible. Used to get kegs of that stuff in college because it was so cheap, you get what you pay for.

Any beer that is brewed specifically to be consumed in abundance would be my least favorite beer. They usually have very little taste and leave me with a hangover, no matter how few I drink.

Also, any "light beer", because they are part of the above category, and because people who have weight problems should just drink less beer, not more worse beer.

Tastes like a gasoline fire.

I tried it once, had one gulp. I had to quit drinking early that night, because no other beer would erase that awful taste.

I just graduated from college this past month, and we were having a party at our house for one last hoo-rah. We had a few kegs, but one of our friends felt the need to bring a six pack of a special beer for us all to split for celebration. Well it turned out to be the absolute worst beer I've ever tasted. It was Old Leghumper from the Thirsty Dog Brewing Company. He says he bought it for the name, and I wouldn't recommend buying it for the taste.. that's for sure.

me neither. In my younger days, at parties, you'd see more warm Millers sitting around on tables then any other beer. Don't know if it was because people forgot where they set their beer, or once it gets semi-warm it's skunk brew.

I can drink about any beer but there are some really bad ones.

Stoneys - A Pennsylvania beer that really sucks. I think it's made from muddy water from the river that runs by the brewery.

Iron City - Good name for it as it feels like iron hitting your stomach.

Icehouse - Thought it would be good as it's brewed by Millers and was fairly cheap. Boy, was I wrong.

Burger - It was a good beer back in the 60's but it's rotgut now. Do they still make it?

Strohs - Used to drink it back in the 70's but they got bought out and changed the brew process and now it's really bad. Do they still make this?

Good Beers - Any German beer that's imported...Becks and Warsteiner come to mind.

It's interesting that some of the comments here incorporate the thought that 'it was good years ago, but......'.

I've noticed that my taste in beer, wine, food, desserts, etc. has changed as I've aged. I read somewhere that, like the rest of our body, taste buds change as we age and they pick up different flavors for better or worse. Maybe this is what's happening here.

I know that some foods I liked 20 years ago, I no longer eat 'cause they just didn't taste as good. Other foods from 20 years ago, that I didn't eat much, I now like. Maybe some of this is learned experience, maybe some of it a change in nutritional outlook but maybe, just maybe, the 'ol tastebuds have changed their focus. Same with beers and wines as with foods. (Who knew! Taste buds have a mind of their own!)

Milwaukee's Best and Burger = all-time worst.

I like the new Dundee brews well enough, at their price point ecspecially, but their Honey Brown still tastes like stale bath water, so I'm putting that up there on the recent list.

Bud Light and Budweiser round out the worst 5 beers ever for me. Their American Ale was a smart/obvious move, and is MUCH more tolerable, in fact I had it at a game recently and it was pretty good, for a cheap draft option.
