Rain delay according to mlb.com scoreboard

Yeah, I just glanced out the front door and see a steady spring shower coming down. Not heavy, but enough to delay the game I think. Hopefully it will pass within the half hour or so. I'm about six miles north of downtown.

Wow, you started early tonight. Stop and take a deep breath. Janish is at SS. Good news. Hanigan is behind the plate. Good news. Brandon's starting to swing the bat. Good news. Hairston isn't at short. Good news. Bruce isn't still languishing in the minors. Good news. Arroyo's pitching and the sun's going down soon. Good news. And if all that's not enough for you to perk up....Joey Votto is still walking among the mortals. :O) Cheer up OBM...you're starting to depress even me. *grin*

You're still too young to realize it yet, but self-delusion is really the only way to true happiness. *grin*

Seriously though, I bet we put up double digits in hits and score 6 runs. Confidence on a young club is like a virus. As long as Bronson doesn't allow several runs early on, I see us dominating the Brew Crew tonight.

Rosales has looked really bad since he came up.

He has to earn more AB's. Of course, there is no way that McDonald should ever play.

A .618 OPS suggests he's been really bad since he came up. Zero power. He's been a ground ball machine. And lately he looks like he's been going to the Brandon Phillips school of swinging.

Like I said, he'll need to start earning some AB's. Becuase he giving the ones we give him away for free.

I gotta agree with OBM here. But this is kinda a silly argument considering the sample size involved. But if OPS is what you want to look at....His first 3 games, his OPS was sitting at 1.171, his last 3 (yes, we're talking 6 games TOTAL) he's gone 1 for 14 with no extra base hits. His last few games, he's swinging at HORRIBLE pitches WAAAAAY up in the zone. I think he's over-excited and has a case of the yips. Give him a few more weeks under his belt and see what we've got then.

One of the most inspiring "sports" moment's I witnessed was the The Macho Man vs Rowdy Roddy at the Cow Palace in 1988, Macho Man was the "Intercontinental Champion" and Roddy bloodied him mightily and kicked him out of the ring and stole his belt and when he held it up above his head 19 K stood up and screamed... it was electrifying and me and my hippie friends sat there and laughed.

Are people still sticking to the whole "hide Herrera cause people will eventually figure him out" thing? Cause six guys got to face him twice tonight, they went 1-6 on the second time seeing him.

Also DRH has faced 54 batters this season and allowed 1 extra base hit. Yes, you read that correctly.

Votto has not rested for an inning yet this year. Perhaps this would be a good night to get him a few innings off...

I was coming on here to post the exact same thing. And not only has not rested for an inning yet, it's hard to see how he'll ever be able to do so. Add in the wet conditions, and I'd take him out (unless the Reds put up 4 or 5 this inning).

Yea, this team has to have the lowest baseball IQ in recent memory. Parra couldn't throw 3 pitches out of 7 for strikes if you came up without a bat and yet we hack at pitches out of the zone in hitter's counts.

That's what bugs me about the run differential. For all its usefulness, you can be sure that the next game will change it. One game is skewed by a 6-0 win, the next is skewed by a 10-1 loss (so far).

Maybe this was brought up earlier in the thread, but why not (when you know the game is already over at 9-0) keep Arroyo in to get his 5-6 innings?

Is it about mercy?

I'm just curious what others think as leaving Arroyo in to "take one for the team" probably saves the bullpen being overworked in a game that now doesn't matter anyway.

I agree with you fully. Unless there is a need to bring back Arroyo on short rest, I would have left him out there tonight.

Bullpen had a fourteen inning game Monday. Let Arroyo throw his 110 pitches and save some wear and tear on the pen.

Maybe it's considered a professional courtesy not to embarrass a pitcher who doesn't have it. I don't know. But I don't see why the bullpen should eat 8 innings when the game is out of hand so early.

Arroyo is no longer allowed to pitch at GAB.

Speaking of GAB, opposing teams just come in here wailing because of the ballpark's history. A possible solution might be to knock a few guys off the plate in the first few batters to back them off instead of just letting them dig in and start turning on pitches. Just a thought.

No matter how many rep points he gets from announcers, Tim McClelland is not a good umpire. His strike zone is indecipherable and the little "look at me" delayed hand signals is annoying to everyone. I dread when I see that guy behind the plate. Tonight, it was no strikes at the knees, going both ways, that is, until I essentially quit watching in favor of Idol ;)

Got in late, turned the TV on at about 8:30 and saw the score was 9-0. Ate dinner and did a couple of things I needed to do to end the day. By this time, it's 10:30 or so and what do I see? Janish pitching. Good grief. Couldn't help but think about what we would do if he got hurt with Gonzalez out. Oh well.

This is a great reality check for everyone. The team is 14-13 and the pitching has been excellent, but blowups like this happen and that's why a complete team has hitters who can hit, not that it would have done any good tonight, but the Reds scored their usual 3 runs (yes, they ocassionally break out, but that's once in awhile). Never mind, just a thought.

The danger is it's our 5th starter going tomorrow night against a red hot team. We could be at .500 after tomorrow and all the air is out of the baloon. It's going to be like this all year, friends. I'm still hoping for 82 wins.

Janish still had a better pitching line than Arroyo tonight. He only gave up 5 runs in his one inning(Arroyo gave up 9 earned runs in his one official inning), and Janish struck out two, Arroyo none. However, opposing batters are hitting .625 vs. Janish.....lol.

Tough is right. The Reds could be 15-16 by the end of day Sunday (I pray they win one game). Proof positive that the pitching staff has to be nearly perfect for them to win. That's what concerns me.

Game Recap:

Bronson was all over the place, but when he did throw a strike, it was right down the middle, about thigh high, the same place where guys would want every pitch in home run derby.

Brandon Phillips popped up overswinging with the bases loaded, then took a nice, fluid swing with the bases empty and hit one in the upper deck.

JJ Hardy hasn't hit in a month but suddenly finds his stroke right the day before the series with the Reds starts and "muscles" an outside pitch to right for a 3 run homer to make it 5-0 after 1.

Quote from me in the 2nd inning after pitcher gets infield hit and Weeks reaches again, but before Craig Counsell hits a tracer to right for the second inning in a row: "I sure hope Dusty gets someone warmed up in a hurry before this one gets out of hand." Enter Ryan Braun. Fastball down the middle, thigh high, Grand Slam to deep right center. Game over.

Jay Bruce hits a home run. Paul Janish pitches and gives up 5 runs but strikes out two. Janish boards a plane to Sarasota to work on a second pitch as he converts to pitcher ;)

Really, the less you know about this game, the better. It was a bad reminder of hopefully bygone days, when the starters got rocked in this manner seemingly every other night.

Another note on leaving Arroyo in: my recent memory of letting someone get rocked "taking one for the team" was LaRussa leaving Jason Marquis in one time a few years back. 13 runs, 14 hits. I thought then and do now that unless you have absolutely no other options or you are looking to get rid of the guy, it is unfair to the guy who just doesn't have anything that night, which was clearly the case with Arroyo last night. Which is why it isn't suprising that it was LaRussa :)

I doubt an agent has any influence on how a player is used once a contract is signed.
