Should be an interesting night. Former Red comes back to the place that traded him and our No. 1 starter faces their best pitcher again. Someday, Aaron Harang will get a break. Probably not tonight, though.

And once again, Phillips back in the four hole is not a good idea, especially since he's been sick.

We shall see what we shall see.

Okay, that's a SICKENING stat. Last night's o-fer from Albert Puljols....it was the first game all year so far that he didn't reach base via a hit or a walk. That's un-real!

Ugh, I don't get the bunt.

I've read that bunting a guy over to third is a much better percentage play then bunting him over to second. Dusty wants to get out in front, that's all there is to it.

And now that Bruce homers, it probably is a moot point. 2-0 Reds.

Who is this team?

My point is that Taveras can score from anywhere. Hairston can work a few pitches, throw off Lohse with his long ritual between pitches and maybe get on base. I just don't get giving away an out at the top of the order in the early innings.

I understand your thinking. On the other hand, you've heard the old baseball adage that a man on second, no out, the batter's job is to get him over to third. It's playing for one run, and if Bruce's fly ball stayed in the park it would have paid off with a sac fly.

On a team that emphasizes pitching, which doesn't have a lot of offense, it's not crazy to push along individual runs rather than playing for a bigger inning. Two different approaches, both understandable.

Reds hitters helped Lohse out there. Nix is a lefty hitting fifth, his K hurt that inning.

I'm happy to have Nix, Dickerson and Hairston on the team, but as for a starting left fielder I think the Reds should be talking some trade.

The speed of the baserunner isn't particularly material here. Taveras can't score from 2md on a groundball or a flyball. He easily can from third.

I wouldn't have a hitter like, say, Votto, give himself up in this situation. Hairston? I'n not so sure that a bunt is such a bad idea. And it wasn't like Hairston simply sacrificed, per se. He could have potentially beat out a bunt try.

Sac Fly, Ground out when MIF are deep, wild pitch, balk, squeeze. Many ways to score from third that you can't from second.

Oh, I'm not saying I like it either. But if you are going to bunt early in the game with a runner on second and zero outs, that would be the situation I would consider it.

My being able to stomach it would be based on the hitter attempting to bunt for a base hit, as opposed to simply sacrificing.

FWIW, I just googled a run expectancy map by Tangotiger based on data from 1999 to 2002:

Runner on 2nd none out: 1.189 runs
Runner on 3rd 1 out: 0.983 runs

There's a lot of circumstances to think about (ie. hairston being at bat instead of someone else), but based on that, even getting the bunt down successfully makes it a poor play, and there's a decent enough chance he doesn't even get it down. Looks like you were right.

One side note to this series thus far, anyone who has watched Schumaker (and yes I know his story) play should be grateful of our 2B defense. He's made a lot of poor plays but more than that his lack of range has caused the Cards staff to give up way too many hits to that side.

Why are the Reds running up by 5 in the 7th?To score more runs? Did you see how quick a 6-1 lead evaporated last night? Bruce had stolen easily off Reyes earlier in the inning and this time he held the ball, so Phillips looks bad.

I just got home from the game. Fantastic crowd tonight. Over 40,000 with over 9,000 walkup tickets purchased today. Hopefully they get another big crowd tomorrow as they go for the sweep.

Great game tonight. Serious props to Hernandez. While he's no gold glover @ 1B, he has done a FINE job filling in for Votto and Hanigan has looked great behind the dish. Loved the game.

But for the love of all that is good and holy, I loathe George and Chris. You're telling me Cincinnati doesn't deserve better than these two?!? They forget FAR TOO OFTEN THAT WE ARE CINCINNATI REDS FANS, NOT FANS OF THE OPPOSING TEAM! ESP. WHEN IT'S THE 'REDBIRDS', RIGHT GEORGE?!?

Great game tonight though!

The game was televised on MLB Network last night. It was great to see the stadium full and rocking.

I was at this game too. The crowd was awesome. The ballpark was rocking after Harang's huge 2-run single. That was a lot of fun.
