True and Owings isn't a bad idea, however with the runner being on 2nd Dickerson was in no danger to hurt the inning and has better patience than Janish or Owings. I would have gambled that he still had a decent chance to get on base in this situation with a new guy coming to pitch. We've already took 2 out of 3 so the gamble makes some sense too me with Votto on deck.

I think the reason managers do that is that every pitcher must face a batter. So they tend to let the new pitcher come in and issue the walk. At that point, there's flexibility to remove that pitcher if need be.

Well, I certainly find it unusual. You're bringing in a closer in the 8th inning, and the first thing you have him do is throw pitches OUT of the zone. It just seems backwards to me.
