How about 6-0?

Anything less than the 3-3 would be a big disappointment, IMO. I'm hoping for 4-2 or better, but 3-3 wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Tonight is the big game of the series.
Game #2 is Owings vs Haren (ouch).
Game #3 is Cueto vs a rookie.

We win tonight & there is a very good chance to win 2/3 & hopefully 3/3 if we get lucky against Haren.
Lose tonight & then face Haren tomorrow. No good.

I'm getting real tired of it, to be honest.

He needs to be in the #8 hole -- he's swinging at bad pitches, making bad contact and hurting the team.

He is a liability at the plate against RHPs, and has been for the better part of a year now.

And, let's face it -- when a team is giving Joey Votto unintentional walks in the 1st inning with no one out to face Phillips, that tells you everything you need to know about the awfulness of your lineup construction.

BTW -- how many times have we seen this: Reds waste golden scoring opportunity and then don't dent the plate again all night?

OnBaseMachine
05-11-2009, 09:51 PM
Brandon Phillips needs to bat 8th. He's a liability in the cleanup spot. Bases loaded, nobody out, and the cleanup hitter up, and you score one run? One run? Unbelievable. They should have scored at least three runs there.

What does he have to do to prove he's not a #4 hitter?

No knock on Gonzo, but the Reds have been a much better offensive team since Hairston took over at SS. And Hairston hasn't been a liability at shortstop, he is a natural infielder, although he certainly is more of a second base type.

With all the posts about Hairston's struggles in the earlier years, the guy proved himself to me last season.

Until the Reds get a top tier shortstop, I'd leave Hairston in the position. Maybe a contender with shortstop problems would trade a decent kid for Gonzalez.

I said all winterthat they needed a LF to hit between Votto and Bruce. I was thumping the deal Phillips drum also. The reason for both was that I had no problem with Phillips returning as long as they batted him in the bottom third of the order, but knew that Dusty would hit him cleanup all season.

Love BP's defense and his smile - dispise his plate approach though. Thing is, that approach might actually change somewhat if you put him 7th or 8th. Of course, we'd have to put up with Uber pouting and whining

Nix is a classic Walt flier. Ludwick scraped up off the refuse pile, ends up St. Louis a failed former prospect, and blows up. St. Louis specialized in that in the last several years.

To hope that Nix goes nuclear like Ludwick did is too much, but Nix's minor league OPS eerily tracks Ludwick's, and Nix does have injuries to help explain getting derailed as a prospect. But could Nix give this team 15 homeruns this year in a heavy platoon in LF? Maybe. Maybe. And much props to Walt, who while doing nothing to fill the gap in LF that was major, did at least hedge his bets a bit on the back end...and, yeah, I am loving Nix's D as well. Not a complete surprise to me though, as he came up a CF with decent skills.

He's showing more raw power than I began to suspect he had...

If Nix goes all Ludwick, Jocketty will be Executive of the Year and the Reds will be in the playoffs.

Yup. Again, that's not realistic (in my view, but, hey, yaneverknow), but for Nix to be available to this club to help stem the bleed from Dickerson's slow start was a nice back end gamble from Jocketty.

What happens when Votto slumps (which is likely), Tavaras, Hernandez, Nix, JHJ revert to form and Gonzo is back at SS.

Several of those games were without Votto. People here have repeatedly given very little hope of Taveras, Hernandez & Hairston doing anything worthwhile because of their career histories. And I've repeatedly said that their previous years not indicative of what they're capable of. Taveras had a HORRIBLE year last year. A career low year. Very probable for a rebound year. Hernandez was sick of being in Baltimore & its horrible staff....he's proven he can swing the stick over his career. A new home is just what the doctor ordered for Ramon. And Hairston...he was flat out SOLID last year and because of his early season slump everyone wrote off last year as a fluke. I disagree with that. What he's doing now and last year are closer to what he's really like I think.

Another thing to remember is that Phillips still hasn't hit his stride yet either. Same for Dickerson. Is it a powerhouse? No. But it's FAR from the black hole of offense that many here make it out to be. Players slump...but they also rebound.
