Another update on Phillips
Posted by JohnFay at 5/29/2009 7:05 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com

Brandon Phillips hit and took groundballs on the field before game. Phillips was unable to do anything on the field Wednesday because of the weather, so this was his biggest test since suffering the hariline fracture of the tip of his right thumb.
"It went great," he said.
No pain?
"I feel it," he said. "It's all about manning up. I felt more throwing than hitting. When I hit in cage the other, it swelled up on me."
Barring more swelling, I'd think Phillips will be in the lineup tomorrow.
"It's up to Dusty (Baker)," Phillips said. "I can play through the pain, but I don't want to mess up the team.
He hit several balls out in the BP session.
Phillips hasn't played since suffering a hairline fracture of the tip of his right thumb Saturday.
"It looks ugly," Dusty Baker said. "It's turning colors."
"Oh, yeah, it's ugly," Phillips said.

Agreed. If he had simply stopped, the dp is not completed. If he continues in a straight path, he might have gotten an obstruction call.

The baserunner must yield to a fielder who is attempting to make a play. Otherwise, the umpire can call interference against the runner and award the DP. I think the other baserunner would also be sent back to second base.

Now Rosales could have stopped, and forced Counsell to come to him to tag him.

If Phillips is able to hit, why in the world would you allow Chris Dickerson to hit if your choice is to swing away? I understand it's righty/righty but Phillips has been on fire.

Phillips attempts a bunt and grounds out to Hoffman. A player with Phillips power needs to be swinging in a one run game.

Just a poorly managed game in the last two innings. If you are not bunting then phillips should have batted in the 8th. I bet the bunt was all Phillips, because they wouldn't expect it.

Talk about one of the biggest mismatches ever. A kid who currently can't keep from diving at everything and a pitcher who just so happens to be one of the best ever at taking advantage of that sort of thing.

Maybe Phillips should go on the DL no reason to bunt in that situation.

Who cares about the past? My point is--everyone thought Burton was the heir apparent to the closer's role while Coffey was junk. Nope. Wrong again (myself included). Tough game to figure out.

If hitters keep hitting .275 off him this season he won't have a 2.70 ERA for long.

.305 career average against him.

we could be looking at 2-5 easily. Just glad Cueto settled in after the first two innings tonight. He really seems to be maturing.

That's what you call jumping the gun on Coffey and now jumping the gun on Burton.

Nah, just poor baseball IQ up and down this roster.

As evidenced by Bruce trying to yank three Hoffman pitches out to right....instead of trying to take them to left center.

Ramon's single won't be a big deal in the boxscore....but it should have some sort symbol next to it showing a highly intelligent approach. He's been doing it all year....it's fun to watch.

Burton's toast--unless someone's going to perform surgery on him soon. Not saying Coffey's going to be great for long, but boy, you just don't know what's going to happen with bullpens.

I love winning the first game of any series. Tough losing a game giving up only 3 hits. Of course, all 1 run games are everyone's fault, low baseball IQ's, poor managing, trying to do anything to get on base...back off the ledge and enjoy the game.

1)I put this lost squarely on Dusty b/c of his awful managing in the last two innings.Runners on 1st and 2nd we are down by only one the bunt play should have clearly been used.I could see letting the batter swing if we was down by more than three runs but we was only down one with NO OUTS.

2)If you are going to let your batter swing a way at the plate with runners on 1st and 2nd then Gomes should have been up there batting not Dickerson.Gomes has played great since coming up to the majors.Dickerson,on the other hand has done nothing and should be sent to the minors.

3)Why in the world was BP up there bunting when we need a homer? If he was up there to bunt then he should have batted in Dickersons spot If Dusty was going to bunt to get the tying and go ahead runners in scoring position.

All of this adds up to is Dusty is the main reason the reds lost the game tonight.

I still say Burton is hurt. There has to be some reason that he lost 6+ MPH on his fastball from last year to this year.

But overall I agree this is a tough game to figure out.

I disagree. Even though I thought the same last night (when BP bunted), and was thoroughly upset, we don't know that wasn't BP doing that on his own due to the fact his hand is not 100%, and he was trying to catch them off guard?

This entire team last night was up their hacking away (a lot of 1st pitch swinging) on Looper. No patience whatsoever. Ridiculous. Again - Brandon Lopper!

Gomes over Dickerson as a PHer for Cueto? On the surface, one might agree. But Coffey has been pretty much lights outs vs righties ... .231 BA .259 OB% .288 SLG% .548 OPS

Vs lefties.... .333 BA .381 OB% .487 SLG% .868 OPS

The thing that made no sense to me was the whole 9th inning sequence. Hairston, Hanigan and Hernandez coming up and Hairston makes the first out. Now Hanigan, who has been one of the team's better hitters up there and he's taken down for Phillips. The only reason to do that would be to play for the Home Run. If the team is just looking to get a baserunner, Hanigan is a much better bet to get on base than Phillips is (especially since Phillips hasn't played in a week and has the broken thumb and all). So with Phillips up there, the expectation has to be that he'd be swinging from his heels trying to hit one out. Instead he bunts. What?????

I can't complain too much about Dickerson. I'm not a guy who likes giving away an out by bunting unless its an automatic out like the pitcher or some one up there, so I have no problem wuth him swinging away. If Rosales plays under control and makes the right play on the bases, it would not have been a double play. Dickerson was probably the right choice with Coffey out there pitching. If the bunt was the play, I'd have let Cueto hit for himself.

And in one month (or less) it could be reversed again.

Coffey has pitched well before. Let's see if can do it over a long period of time. He's not missing bats and his HR/FB rate is about 33% his usual rate.

I still bet Burton long term.

But then you telegraph the bunt for sure. Even if you had Dickerson bunting, there is some uncertainly which increases your chances of something good happening.

Agree, but I'd have saved Dickerson to hit for Taveras to get the run home. Cueto is a good bunter but you make a good point, perhaps Janish to bunt may have been a better choice.
