This game was the most unlikely game they would win of the entire series. With that in mind, they will probably win.

Gallardo is dealing, nasty heater, devastating curve, Dickerson and JHJ have Kd in short order.

Not a pleasant start to the game. Crowd roaring already on every pitch.

membengal
05-31-2009, 02:12 PM
He Ks the side. He may K 27 today if he pitches like that the rest of the game.

Owings had best be ready to meet the moment or this will be over quickly.

Fielder flies to short LF, runner cannot tag.

Bloop single scores another, runner from first to third.

2-0 Brewers.

And...I am having a tough time working out a scenario where the Reds have a shot in this one.

Gallardo is close to unhittable in day games, particularly day games at Miller.

Ramon works a BB. Nice at-bat.

Alex G up.

Why is he hitting ahead of Hanigan at this point?

membengal
05-31-2009, 02:39 PM
Alex G on a 1-0 pitch chases a ball he couldn't hit with a boat oar and flings his bat 4 rows up in the stands while flailing. He does that a lot.

Bases loaded, one out. Hanigan up.

5th K in 5 outs for Gallardo.

Tough for the Reds to come back against this pitcher. Big opportunity wasted last inning when Hanigan couldn't make contact with bags full. Seemed like a great fastball by pitcher struck him out, but it 's a big play.

A longball by Bruce would help. If he isn't going to get on base much, he needs to hit the long ball in a game like this.

Now pitcher Gallardo has to remove a band aid on his arm that was distracting Reds hitters. That explains everything. Nice work, Dusty.

When Volquez returns tomorrow Burton should go down.

I wouldn't dump Owings over this, let him work through it.

Lincoln threw pretty well last night, maybe he'll come back. With the two year deal I don't think he's going anywhere.

If Owings continues to struggle, then Maloney takes his spot. Next time Reds need a replacement starter, it should be Maloney. Next replacement reliever should be Roenicke or Manuel.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving Maloney a shot but I get visions of Phil Dumatrait when I think of him. I have no observations or numbers to suggest that but it just pops into my head.

As for Alonso, he needs to grow his game and the Bigs isn't the place to do it.

That's their fault. If they had started him in AA, he would be OPSing .875 or better there too. He's just a natural hitter. He can help this team. Now. And they need his help. Now.

This season can slip away in an eye-blink this next 15 days with Votto gone, against this particular competition.

Rem

Maloney and Dumatrait both tall lefties. But I think the comparison ends there.

Dumatrait always had trouble with high walk totals. Maloney hardly ever walks anyone.

And Dumatrait got his AAA ERA down in the mid-3 range. Maloney is at 2.33 this year, and has been far more dominant at this level than Dumatrait was.

My guess, based on the public reports and following his progress, is that Maloney could be a left handed Bronson Arroyo type pitcher. If he can get his fastball up to respectable levels, say 88-90 on a regular basis, he can be successful using an assortment of pitches and command. If his fastball is mid-80s, and hitters don't have to worry about it, he will get tagged.

Without Votto the Reds need an offensive threat. The only options I see are Alonso -- or possibly using Gomes at first base on a regular basis and hoping he hits all kinds of pitching.

Probably good to stay conservative with Alonso for his own development, but the Reds need a threat, particularly from the left side, and I don't see other options in the organization.

Let's not get carried away on Hanigan. First off, in this game he fanned with bases loaded one out opportunity earlier. Then, on third base, Brewers handed the Reds a run there -- Dickerson ground ball, not even a look to third base, Brewers go for DP but fail to turn it. Hanigan left standing on third. Brewers announcers could not believe he stayed at third, nor could I.

Brewers pitchers may be good, but this game has been one missed Reds opportunity after the other.

Hanigan is a very good backup catcher. He's not the team MVP.

By the way, I don't know how Dusty could leave Dickerson in that last inning against Setters. He had Gomes and Rosales from the right side. Bring in Rosales, Hairston can move to CF. Or Bruce can play center if Taveras is unavailable.

I assume Gomes will hit for Nix, but then the Brewers will go to a righty. So if he was saving Gomes, it will not get him an advantage next inning.
