I hate seeing players with zeros for their stats. I just feel bad for them. We should help out Chris Carpenter and give him two "1" 's. 3-1, 1.62 ERA. :O)

Ankiel hits a single through the right side.

Harang seems to be relying on the fastball rather heavily again.

Blitz Dorsey
06-04-2009, 08:43 PM
Boy, Brantley is exactly right. Harang is not using his legs nearly enough and that's why he's struggling.

Brantley might be the worst PBP man in radio history, but he's a good color analyst on TV. He's hitting this nail right on the head. Harang is not pushing off enough.

_Sir_Charles_

Tom Servo

I am sorry. I know it's been said. By everyone. But, really, really, really, really, this is complete horse post-digestive matter that Grande is foisted on a partisan Reds fanbase with his excitement for the Cardinals. I hate it. Hopefully Harang pitching to Pujols with two outs didn't ruin your appetite. Ouch, not a very bright move there. I would be pitching around Pujols with two outs 100 times out of 100. Well, I guess if the bases were loaded I would consider pitching to him. ;-)

Phillips hits into his second DP. I hesitate to pick on Brandon too much. He's been VERY good lately. Carpenter's a tough matchup for anybody though when he's throwing well.

He's yet to give up a HR yet this season. Sick. We need to fix that for him...several times.

Phillips won't see his game go to the next level till he learns to pick his battles. You don't go head to head against Chris Carpenter. You just don't. All you can do is try to see as many pitches as humanly possible against him and pray something bloops in between defenders.

Actually, Phillip's numbers vs. a number of the NL's #1 starters for other NL teams are OK.

Carpenter .889 (before todays game)
Zambrano .719

That's funny, as I've been imagining that happening almost every pitch.

Carpenter is like Williamson when he pitched for us before his trade to the BoSox. Every pitch might just be his last. The difference is, Carpenter throws so much in control all the time, he never looks like he might ever get injured.

We like to joke on here about how stupid Jocketty was to sign Carpenter to a long-term deal. I'm guessing Mozeliak is kissing the ink on that contract right about now. Carpenter IS the Cardinals' chance for the postseason. No Carpenter; no postseason for the Cardinals. Simple as that.

Let's see how deep into the season he makes it. It was a good risk, but not sure if it'll pay off.

It still wasn't necessary to sign the deal at that time, but Carpenter certainly is worth the Cardinals money.

If you reconstruct the game based on walking Pujols each time, and we walked him in the first, they get two runs in that first inning.

Hey! Don't go using logic on me here. In my happy fantasy world this game would be tied. Just HAD to burst my bubble didn't you. :D

Cubs & Braves rained out
Pirates beat Mets 11-6 (nice debut for McCutchen)
Brewers lost 3-4 to the Fish
Astros down 7-1 in the 7th to the Rockies

Nice escape again for Aaron. I can't remember the last time I saw this many double plays in one game. That's 6 so far.

He would have gone on the open market at a time when he was recovering from a serious injury.

The Cards would currently have him signed on a much lower, incentive laden contract.

Why? He's at 110 pitches and he's been pretty darned solid since about the 2nd inning. When he's gotten into trouble he's worked his way out of it. He's on a short leash now though I say. 2 poor pitches since the 2nd...just both to Pujols unfortunately.

Split the series 2-2. Tough loss but the Reds acquitted themselves very nicely after the Brewers sweep. With Mil. losing we didn't lose any ground at least. Gotta find that silver lining.

Three observations:

1) Harang battled, but was outdueled tonight by a better pitcher. It's rare in today's game that you see two CG's in the same game, however.

2) The defense turned 4 DP's tonight. So Harang was throwing a lot of ground balls. (However, he also had to allow some baserunners in order to have the opportunity to get the DP's.)

3) What was up with the postgame interview with Carpenter? I guess FSN Ohio has become FSN CardinalsFanBoys. Seriously, I don't want to see a postgame interview with an opposing player, talking about "Albert". I can understand if it was a national broadcast, but this is the Reds network!

I remember Nux sometimes interviewing opposing players for the "Star Of The Game", so I don't have a problem with that in and of itself. But the problem I had with it tonight was that they have never done it for anyone else. Why are they doing it now?

Yeah, Carp looked nasty. The only thing I wish is that they'd have made him throw a few more pitches. He hadn't thrown more than 93 pitches in a game before last night. Tony wouldn't have let him go long.

But it still may be asking a little much. He was really, really good last night.

He was really, really good last night.Unfortunately, he was just pumping quality, barely hittable strikes in there last night, so there wasn't an opportunity to work the count but on a few occasions. I honestly think he would have shut down any team in MLB last night, as he has since coming back from injury. We are just the latest victim.

I haven't read the game thread but why did they even pitch to Pujols? He's easily their most productive hitter and the NL's for that matter. IMO,he needs the Barry Bonds treatment. IIB's every time up,especially if there are runners on 1st and 2nd or just a runner at first.

I am less tollerant of Reds announcers and internet forum members gushing like star-struck teenagers over the other team.

Carpenter pitched a stellar game (even if against an offensivley anemic team) and I think we all tip our collective caps to him in respect. Acting like a school girl who just got a class ring and a letterman jacket is a wholey different issue.

I went to baseball-reference to look at Aaron v. Albert and there was Pujols right at the top of Harang's list. Of course, that means he's faced Pujols more than any other hitter (59 PA's).

Here's his line:

.296/.322/.556 16 hits, 5 doubles, 3 homers
3 K's and 3 walks, 10 RBI's

but then I looked at the breakdown and Pujols had his best time against Harang in his first four years against him (although 2004 was down, just 1 for 7). In the last three seasons, he's just batting .185 against Harang. Last night Albert just beat Aaron - without last night's numbers, he was just batting .130 since 2007.

I actually like it when our pitchers go after the opposing hitters. I liked it when we challenged Berkman. I liked it when we challenged the guys in the Brewers lineup. And on the surface, I like it when we challenge Albert...but when the guys behind him are struggling as badly as they are...I disagree with it. I like the aggressive mentality, but someone's got to rein that in and look at the bigger picture. Aaron was struggling with his control early in the game and he's not had his best stuff recently. Giving Pujols the free pass and shutting down the rest of the team is the way to go there. Had Aaron been lights out and throwing his best stuff, I'd have no problem with him challenging ANY hitter regardless of that hitter's protection or lack of protection. That just wasn't the case yesterday. Walk him.
