Per Fay:

Hairston 3b
Dickerson cf
Phillips 2b
Nix lf
Hernandez c
Bruce rf
Gonzalez ss
Rosales 1b
Owings p

(Owings 0-2, 6.75 ERA in career vs. Cubs, in 16 innings)

-Nix batting cleanup (has done so once previously this year)....Bruce batting 6th (3rd time he has hit there this year). Bruce was 1-for-27 on the road trip, and is on 0-for-17 skid. And in his last 13g, is 5-for-47 (.106).

Dusty Baker, pre-game, discussing Bruce hitting 6th: "We're just trying to take a little pressure off him. ... He just needs a little blooper, a little bleeder to come out of it ... rarely do you see a guy come out of it with a home run."

Also: "Nobody's pulling harder for him than any of us are."

-- Baker said he had talked again to Joey Votto, but Baker declined to provide details. We saw Votto in street clothes in the clubhouse, but reporters had already been told by Reds media relations director Rob Butcher that Votto is not yet ready to speak publicly. Votto went on the DL on May 30 because of stress and is eligible to come off the DL June 14. Baker said he does not have a timetable on Votto's return.

--Willy Taveras (hamstring) could be available in an emergency tonight, Baker said. Taveras has missed five of the last six games with a tight right hammy.

Cubs lineup:
Soriano lf
Theriot ss
Fukudome cf
D.Lee 1b
Hoffpauir rf
Fontenot 3b
K.Hill C
A.Blanco 2b
C.Zambrano p
(Zambrano is 14-10 career vs. Reds, 3.06 ERA, in 32 g (28 starts)

I had tickets to tonight's game. I was going to bring my parents (Cub fans). Unfortunately, we couldn't make trip, so we're stuck watching on tv. Is it wrong that I was hoping for a rainout;)

I certainly hope the Owings experiment is over after tonight. Please be good, Maloney.

If Hairston had any kind of arm, and the umpire had any kind of eyesight, Owings retires 6 of the 7 batters he faced, 4 on strikes.

I hope we get the same strike zone.

Cubs 1, Reds 0 after 1.

1-2-3 inning for Owings. Cubs still lead 1-0 middle of 2nd.

Bob Borkowski

So, at the middle of the 3rd...still Cubs 1 and Red Stockings 0. Owings has settled down nicely.

We are patiently waiting for the fireworks.

After a shaky first, Owings has settled down nicely. 5 k's. Nice play by Rosales at first to end the inning. 1-0 Cubs after 2 1/2

How's this for surprising...3rd inning, Greinke's allowed 4 runs already. Including his first dinger in I don't know HOW long.

Okay, make that 6 earned runs in the 3rd.

1-2-3 inning for Owings. How about the offense gets something going now?

_Sir_Charles_
06-05-2009, 08:15 PM
1-2-3 fourth for Owings. If not for that leadoff single off Hairston's glove in the 3rd, Owings would've had 3 straight 3 up's 3 down's. I don't know what it is with Reds starters and rough first innings, but it's certainly becoming a trend.

I know Owings isn't that stellar...but he's actually looked really good tonight (sans the 1st inning). Even with the jack to Zambrano.

His pitches have really good movement and he's not making many mistakes. It's like he's playing to keep his job (which may be the reality upon Volkie's return).

Zambrano looking to pull a Rick Wise?

_Sir_Charles_
06-05-2009, 08:35 PM
Wow, MLB Tonight is showing highlights and I've seen 2 HORRIBLE defensive plays by Dunn. A pop up he lets fall that shouldn't even have been close. And now a line single that goes under his glove as he covers his eyes as he tries to make the grab. I don't know if it was insects or what, but I didn't see any sun around there. Really, really bad. The immediate quote they used "he seems to be allergic to leather". He's having a fantastic season, I'd hate to see him blemish it with a lack of focus on defense.

He swung at a borderline strike .....more of a pitcher's pitch.

It's like 1 batter does it right....then the next is not watching and is just ready to hack.

Like in the 8th...Nix and Bruce did the same thing. More Nix then bruce though....and so did CD as well. You watch the other hitters....wait out the pitcher and then you think he is just going to groove one to you.

It's a pattern that happens from game to game..... different hitters each night.
It's amazing that they could look so impatient even with all the walks.

Just not enough offense.

Understatement of the year.

I hate to say this (and I'm really embarrassed by saying it), but I don't watch much anymore. Yeah, I listen and follow and rejoice when they win and grieve when they lose, but watching this team try to score runs is simply too much for me. This team was based on pitching and defense and with the problems we've had with Volquez, Harang, and others this year, it hasn't worked out. I've always said that you must score runs to win regardless of what ace or another is on the mound for another team. This team can score on the worst of the teams, but has a real problem hen the going gets tough against good pitching. That's always the case when you depend on a lot of young guys and marginal offensive players.

It's a whole lot of the reason why .500 + 1 is a good goal unless Walt finds some offense and quits depending on the likes of Hairston, Dickerson, and Gonzalez to provide some offense. They can hit mistakes, but some pitchers don't serve up mistakes on silver platters. Besides Gonzo's .209 average, Dickerson's .241, and Hairston's .253, you got the all-world Bruce at .215 (with a .298 OBP--yuck) and Rosales, the star of AAA at .232. It's unreasonable to ask this team to score runs. Time to make a move, Walt. That is, unless you want to go 82-80. I think we're on track for that.
