Did Brantley really just say if half the Nationals played with the heart of Ryan Zimmerman they would be contenders? Is the game really that easy? Does talent really not play a part anymore?

All those crummy pitchers just need to try harder, play with more heart. Then they'd be a top 5 staff.

It would be nice if the posters in the game thread could try a bit harder as well. The effort has been, well, pathetic. If we put in the work Reds' Fanatic did to open this thread...we'd have a much better squad.

And yet we're still winning and nearly have a sweep...and nearly a 1/2 game out of first too.

If we were free-falling due to Votto/Encarnacion being out...I'd be more inclined to agree. But as long as we're treading water...I'm fine with biding our time until they get healthy. If they feel the need to add a bat temporarily, then I'd rather they dig down on the farm.

It probbaly depends on who's available in the bullpen.

I assume Cordero is not. Weathers, maybe he's closing. Massett pitched 2 last night, and may not be available. Hererra should be good to go, as well as Rhoades. You want the RH pitcher vs. Zimmeran, and than maybe Herrara vs. Dunn, so maybe Fisher for one batter and then Herrara.

I'm not saying it's panic time, but the Reds are going to face some hard going to stay in the race with lineups like they've fielded this week. Remember that we are currently playing an absolutely pathetic baseball team.

Votto is back taking BP. Though the Reds are obviously not setting expectations, Dusty Baker hinted his return could be real soon. Encarnacion should be back to taking BP this weekend after his MRI was negative, and could go back on a rehab assignment next week. These are not hard-and-fast timetables, but it's something.

Yes, we're facing a pretty bad club....and next comes the Royals IIRC. After that it's the Braves & the Pale-hose. None of those 3 teams are above average offensive teams. I like our chances in all 3 of those series with our pitching.

From what I've heard, Edwin should be ready fairly soon. There was talk of a relapse, but that turned out to be nothing more than his wrist being sore from pushing himself. He should go on a rehab assignment soon.

It is amazing how far Kearns has fallen over the years. I remember seeing him from his early days in the minors and he was dominant in the minors looked like a can't miss prospect and these days he is just barely in the league. On a better team he would have been cut already.

In 3 games we have scored 9 runs. That's nine runs against the worst pitching staff I've ever seen (against everyone else anyway). Our team has 20 hits. OTOH, the Nationals have scored 7 runs.

Simply this team cannot hit and they prove it every day. Everyone is euphoric about the pitching as we win 3-2, but it won't hold up as the pitcher's arms fall off from working under this much stress.

I admire your optimistic outlook and sunny attitude, Sir Charles, but it's not realistic. This team is hitting so poorly (and have all season), that even sterling pitchig performances cannot get them wins. Look at Bruce, Gonzalez, Traveras, Hairston, all of them are hitting very poorly and are almost automatic outs. Ecarnacion, I predict, won't play this year and Votto, who carried the team for awhile, cannot do it all. Major moves to bring some offense to this team is needed unless we want to finish near .500. Or just below. When you go into Washington against a team pitching staff with a team ERA of 5.41 and you score 9 runs and get 20 hits, red flags should go up everywhere.

Frankly I am tired of that excuse, we should sweep the Nats regardless of whether or not Votto and Edwin are in the lineup. What happens when they come back and we still aren't hitting, will the excuse be they haven't played in awhile and need to get back into the swing of things. Lets face it even with those guys the Reds are a good starting pitcher and a big bat away from the playoffs.

The Reds offense, yes it's struggled the past week or two, but overall it's really not anywhere near a bad as many here make it out to be.

Other than the top 3 scoring teams in the NL (Phillies 5.4 runs per game / Dodgers 5.1 / Rockies 5.0) all the other teams are pretty much neck & neck in runs scored at around 4.6 to 4.2 per game. The Reds are at 4.3 per game. So basically we're middle of the pack in the NL for runs scored.

In fact, we're pretty much right around the middle of the pack in nearly all NL team offensive catagories. One good game offensively pushes us up 5 or so slots in many statistical catagories, so I look at a good portion of the NL teams as a big grouping. Getting Votto & Edwin back changes things rather dramatically IMO. I know Votto is just one guy, but that one guy changes quite a bit. It puts players back in their normal positions for one, but it also changes the offensive attitude of the club from my perspective. Bruce can't struggle this badly all season, he's simply too talented to be hitting close to .200. Getting Edwin back also allows players to play in thier normal positions more too. I think it'll hurt us defensively...but if he's even remotely close to normal at the plate, it's a plus for us.

If people find this team boring, fine. If you think it's boring to win games 3-2 or 2-1 compared to losing 6-5 or 7-6 then we'll never agree on what's exciting. This team won't put up the big scoring games we've seen in the past 10 years, but I think it'll win more games than those teams did...and in my book, that's all that matters.

Winning.

And thus far, this team has done just that. Get healthy, and we could see this team take off!

This is about a putrid of an offense since the 1982 Reds. Just no pop at all in the lineup. Even with a healthy Votto and EdE its no great thing. If Jocketty and Bobby C are serious about staying in the playoff they need to something very soon. There's no way they can stay in contention with as poor an offense as this is.

Sorry, I'm just not buying that. Yes, several players are slumping right now AND we've got 2 pretty big cogs out of the lineup. And guess what...we're STILL winning ballgames. We're just winning them in ways Reds' fans aren't accustomed to seeing us win them in.

Predicting Edwin out all year is a MAJOR stretch IMO. He's just about to go on a rehab assignment most likely this week. I agree that Votto can't do it all. Nobody expects him too. But he DOES help.

If sterling pitching performances can't get this team wins...then how come they have done exactly that most of the season thus far? We're getting enough offense to win and that's with us struggling offensively and playing shorthanded.

I've got nothing against us going out and adding a bat. I just don't see it as a "do or die" situation at this point. For this club to make the postseason this year...just about EVERYTHING has to fall into place just about perfectly. The odds of that happening are VERY slim. As long as we're making progress...I'm perfectly fine with the way things are.

I think a serious run at the playoffs this season is just gravy. I don't think the organization wants to part with big pieces to try a run this year. Certainly with just Votto around, the offense still was weak, but we can't say what a healthy Encarnacion would have meant to the club's complexion. His approach at the plate at the season's start was real good, even if he wasn't hitting. And we now know his hitting was down because he was injured. Had that not occurred, things might be more interesting.

I can't go back and look, but I think it was WVAFan who suggested it's likely (maybe not the right word I read) that EE won't be back. I suspect that they're trying the non-surgical route because surgery might well mean he's done for the year (I'm not a medical person, so I really don't know). A bat with some pop would be nice, but I'm not willing to sacrifice a big piece to get that bat for a season that might well not be a playoff year. But that's just my opinion.

Well wait a minute. I'm the one saying that losing this game is no big deal. I'm not gnashing my teeth here. All I'm saying is Owings was lucky enough not to have given up 6 runs instead of one (he was bailed out by good defense and heavy hacking by the Nats); expecting a sweep is the silly approach, not claiming that Owings is what you say he is, a fifth starter, who today got very lucky and probably didn't deserve to win in the first place.

Heck with it. Sometimes you just get beat, it happens.

That's my take. It was disappointing and folks are right that Owings walked a tightrope and was lucky to have had a chance for a win. But frankly, it was the defense that kept him in the game. And, of course, it was the failure of the defense that led to the loss. This one is the counterbalance to the game some weeks ago that we had no business winning.

I can't remember who said something about losing one game to the Nats, arguably the worst team in baseball these days, and yet it happens. I went back and looked at the Mets' 120 loss season and they even beat the Giants (that year's NL champs) twice that season. I assume the Giants hung their heads in shame. :)

[As an aside, the Mets that year only had 4 shutouts, all pitched by Al Jackson. They included a 1-0 besting of the Cardinals with Bob Gibson giving up one unearned run. Jackson went 8-20 that season, half of his wins were shutouts. Any team can win on any given day.]

The thing that gets me is that so many games, it is as if the other team is the Washington Generals and the only way that the Reds lose is if they mess up, or if Walt Jocketty had made the right moves in the offseason, we would nary lose a game. There seems to be a disconnect to the fact in MLB that at some point in a game, each team is seemingly "in the game" and has a chance to win, and it doesn't always have to be "we suck" to explain a loss.

I don't think Phillips' error cost them the game. The Nats already had a tie if Brandon had kept the ball in his pocket like he should have and still had runners on 1st and 3rd. As long as this team only scores runs once or twice a game, the pressure will build on the pitching and defense and they'll remain at best a .500 team.
