WASHINGTON, DC (Herald de Paris) - Future Hall of Fame pitcher, Pedro Martinez, worked out with the A.L. Champion Tampa Bay Rays, yesterday. An unnamed source close to the club said that team executives flew to the Dominican Republic, last week, and were impressed enough with Martinez to invite him to work out with the team. Another workout is coming. If all continues to go well, Petey could be in-uniform by next weekend. The story is also being reported on Listin Diario - el Deporte (http://www.listin.com.do).

Martinez, who pitched well in the World baseball Classic, pitched last year in the majors for the New York Mets.

Interesting. I've always liked Pedro, maybe if he can have another playoff run he will retire happily.

To add to the story, Cubs too:

8:03pm: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that "a source close to Pedro Martinez indicated" that the Cubs have watched him throw as well. According to Cafardo, the source indicated that "both teams have begun to at least explore how much money it would take" to add Martinez to their rosters.

Carfardo adds that Martinez was throwing his fastball at around 94 mph.

7:32pm: Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times confirms that a Rays staffer watched Pedro throw 20 fastballs, but writes, "Word is that it is 'very unlikely' anything will come of it." Topkin adds that Pedro's workout "may have been as much about getting his name out there as anything."

Knowing full well that it will not happen; It would be interesting to see the Reds make a move like this. Adding Pedro or Ben Sheets later in the year if they are still in the race to see if they could upgrade the rotation and gain whatever advantage over the other teams in the division.

I would be satisfied to see the Reds do this if it were to happen but right now I don't think we need to be looking to upgrade our pitching staff. Let's not try fixing something that isn't broke ;)

Unless one of them can play LF and hit clean up we don't need them
