I know folks get a lot of big LOLs out of raking the Reds' offense over the coals, but I look at the Royals' offense and see a similarly cruddy collection. Yet the Reds' pitchers have surrendered 11 runs to them in two games. Team failure effort, IMO, this weekend.

FCB, I know your thesis to start the year was that the Reds' pitching was a problem and the offense would be fine, but, man, you've just been flat wrong. Wrong as it gets. And re-writing what has been happening to lay it on the feet of the staff is silly. Piling up inept performance after inept performance like this team has on offense puts inordinate pressure on the staff to be near perfect.

The pitching has been really quite good for this team, all year. The hitting has been far from that. That is the sum total of the 2009 reds to this point in time.

The Royals have 5 unearned runs but Cueto got hurt by poor location on two hits last inning (which knocked in 3 runs).

It's not as simple as blaming Hairston. But still, two errors, a papercut difference on a potential double play and a wallbanger in and out of Bruce's glove...

The worm has turned on this one through the smallest of margins.

VR
06-14-2009, 03:29 PM
But the one error opened the floodgates.

27 pitches extra, with the primary cause being the 2 errors. Yes Johnny had chances to buck up....but it's not reasonable to ask any starter to put up with 4+ out innings.

Cueto isn't on today....but if he gets through the 5th without allowing a run....he will be leading the National League in ERA. I'm not thinking he's the problem.

I disagree with this. I just can't point to ONLY the pitching. Johnny's certainly not on (or at least he wasn't the first half of the game). He had opportunities to overcome the errors & other miscues and he didn't. So you can certainly point to the pitching...but so far this season, the pitching and the defense have been the biggest bright spots overall. I know you like the offense (or at least the offense's potential...as do I), but it's pitching & defense that's keeping this team afloat right now. Just not today. Today we're struggling at the plate, in the field and the pitching isn't lights out. Not a good combination.

It's hard to argue that the hitting has been better than the pitching. It hasn't. But it's similarly hard to argue that any team missing its two biggest sluggers (Votto, Encarnacion) for weeks/months would be performing at its peak.

Take Braun and Fielder out of the Brewers' lineup and see where they'd be. Yet for all the Reds' troubles on offense, they're still in a cluster of teams in the middle of the NL in terms of runs scored. Realistically, they're probably ninth.

Is that the same Encarnacion that was hitting .130 and committing two errors a week? Hardly the same as relieving the club of a talent like Ryan Braun. The Reds' offense looked okay at the beginning of the season because Votto was playing like the Venegeful God of the Old Testament. The Reds aren't as bad as they've been the past two weeks, but they aren't a whole lot better at full strength, in my view.

Who knows what either EE or Votto will do with the rest of the season assuming either plays significantly....

That said its a safe bet that Votto's numbers will regress. One could look at it this way-the Votto led offense was playing over it's head with Votto's numbers.

True, but still with us missing two of our biggest pieces for a pretty big chunk of the season it's not as bad as people make it out to be. With those 2 bats in the lineup, we're most likely right in the middle of the NL in offense. Nobody thought this would be a great offensive team, it's too young and it has too many holes, but if healthy....they're good enough to win a pretty good portion of thier games considering our pitching.

The fact that we're in a hitters paradise only helps us if we have long-ball hitters. We do have some, but two of our top 3 power hitters are out...so that hitters paradise is only helping opposing teams right now...only our pitching is offsetting the noticability of it.

Folks are acting like this offense is one of the 600 run Pirates' offenses of this last decade.

I think this team is roughly a 700 run offense-Not much different than last year.

If the goal is the playoffs, that's not a good enough offense to get it done.

It doesn't matter why does it? You're arguing it hasn't been a problem. It has been a problem.

Who knows what either EE or Votto will do with the rest of the season assuming either plays significantly....

That said its a safe bet that Votto's numbers will regress. One could look at it this way-the Votto led offense was playing over it's head with Votto's numbers.

Arguing "what's" been a problem? Of course missing two big bats is a problem. And yes, the offense has hardly been good. It's just the constant shrill harping on how historically bad this offense is that is flat-out nauseating.

It's nowhere near as bad as all that; hyperbole exists when this pitching is praised as much as the offense is bad. I'm saying--and have been saying--that by year's end the offense and pitching will be NL average.

600 runs? This team looks like the 1968 version of the LA Dodgers.

I guess this would be called a harping on the historic hyperbole?

Let's get back to the game at hand. Most of the last two pages are discussions for ORG.

The Reds have more errors than runs scored, you really want us talking about this one?

Reds get a walk.

Reds have played a ton of games on the road recently. I'm guessing they start to hit when they get home again.

Err...no. I said Votto was playing over his head and singlehandedly dragging a completely anemic offense up to merely below average.

I don't mean to call you out dsmith, but I've seen this stated a lot by different poeple and I have to wonder just how true it is. His OPS the last four months that he's played (345 PAs):

.954
1.123
.979
1.274

I'm not sure if Votto's truly a 1.000+ OPS monster or not, but he's been awfully good for quite a while now. It's tough to call it a hot or lucky streak when he's been doing it for this long. Given his excellent plate approach/discipline and solid power, perhaps he legitimately is a ~1.000 OPS player. What worries me, though, is how he'll respond to this latest bout of infections and severe stress. Tough to perform at such an exceptional level with that much bringing you down.

Well, at least we are leaving some teams thinking that they are making progress when, really, they are just playing a team playing like the worst team in the league right now. The Nats and Royals starting to think their pitching staffs are coming around...

True indeed. And if GABP is, as jojo says, a hitter's paradise, then why expect him to "regress," necessarily.

The fact is, even if Joey's is truly *just* a .950 hitter, taking him out means this offense collapses.

Rhodes coming in to replace Masset.

You want to see something that'll make your head spin...check out the current box score for this game. Now look at the ERA's for the pitchers the Reds put in this game. Simply stunning.

~for those too lazy to look....

2.17 Cueto
1.90 Herrera
0.74 Masset
0.86 Rhodes

Bound to happen without Votto and the starting becoming increasingly suspect.

The team's definitely unstable right now, and certainly not very deep.
