Very light game thread. I guess with Taveras out there's nothing to say.

Reds down by two, Hairston up in the fourth, let's get that big offense going.

One out. Chisox shortstop Ramirez can move out there. Gets Hairston on a nice play on slow grounder.

Two outs. Nix doubles. The tension is unbearable. Can Hernandez knock him in? Yes, double to right. 2-1 Chisox.

It's kind of to be expected in a bottom-of-the-order inning. It's all the other innings that take their toll.

Hanigan shouldn't be hitting in the bottom of the order.

Arroyo pitches out of trouble with man on second. Arroyo's best ability as a pitcher, IMO, is working out of trouble. Along with durability. And probably the mental toughness to pitch for a team that doesn't score runs.

Going to the bottom of the sixth the Sox lead the Reds 2-1.

Reds have failed to knock in man on third with one out and then another with no out. Time to maybe score a couple of runs somehow.

What they ought to do is trade Hernandez. They won't, but they should. Bring up Tatum to back up Hanigan.

It's a risk, I know, but it would save a lot of money.

Hanigan has earned the starting catcher's job, it's undeniable. But they won't do it. They'll start Hernandez behind the plate and Hanigan will play twice a week.

Hanigan should be batting second in the lineup, even first until the team gets a genuine lead off threat. If Willy must play, hit him at the bottom of the order unless and until he gets going.

They will hit for Arroyo after this inning. Let's hope the Reds are still in front.

Second high throw by Hanigan and Sox steal second base. Maybe I awarded Hanigan the starting job a bit hastily.

membengal

By the way, reports of Mike Leake's demise may be exaggerated. He is pitching tonite on short rest for ASU. Either the reports of his "serious tendinitis" were wrong, or ASU is risking the kid's career.

Props to Dusty, by the way, for being ready with Rhodes here. Good move.

JHJ singles to RF, Dickerson held up at 3b. Surprised Dickerson didn't score on that. Not the world's best base-running from Dickerson there.

Just watched the JHJ and BPhill at bats. What a microcosm of this year.

JRJ swung at several horrible pitches and nearly fell down on one swing.

BPhil gets up and hacks away at the first pitch.

Yet somehow JHJ gets a single, Brandon eeks out a sac fly that scores a run.

Rhodes was brought into face Thome. It made perfect sense.

But why the double switch? So Rhodes could face Pods? It was clearly the right move to match Rhodes with Thome, but why take out the better defender?

membengal
06-19-2009, 09:37 PM
Not sure on that. Perhaps to keep JHJ's bat in the game? JHJ got a hit, helping to set up the fourth run, so it paid off.

Rhodes gets Podsednik to fly out, and now Stormy is being brought in with one out in the Chicago 8th.

Dusty loves the double switch, he put Rosales at third and move JHJ to short. I didn't like the move either as JHJ is a liabilty with the glove though I do like his play at short better.
