Per Fay:
Bit of a shakeup:

Chris Dickerson 8
Jerry Hairston Jr. 6
Joey Votto 3
Brandon Phillips 4
Laynce Nix 7
Jonny Gomes dh
Jay Bruce 9
Ramon Hernandez 2
Danny Richer 5

Bronson Arroyo 1

Wow. No matter how you shake it up (and I like what he's done), there still is no answer at third until Edwin comes back. Guess that's normal...

Btw, I haven't been keeping up--didn't I read where Edwin in on the 60-day DL now? Putting it August until he returns?

At this point, the only options at 3B are:

Adam Rosales
Danny Richar (a converted 2B)
Jerry Hairston Jr. (with Paul Janish taking over at SS).

I don't mind giving Richar a look, but I would also like to see that third option at some point.

As for Encarnacion, he was simply transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. The time he spent on the 15-day DL counts toward his time on the 60-day DL. It's a procedural move to open a spot on the 40-man roster.

No, EE's 60 day DL is retroactive to when he originally went on the DL. He's eligible to come back Saturday, and is currently rehabbing in Louisville.

I actually like tonight's lineup.

I also like option3. Of course, I'm not sure better defense at short and worse at third is any better.

But the Reds need some modicum of offense, as well. So Hairston (as pedestrian as he is) has to start somewhere on the left side of the infield for now. The Reds can use Rosales as a late-inning defensive replacement at 3B.

Actually, I think there will be plenty of opportunities for all four of them to get some playing time (though JHJ will likely get the most PT).

I'm shaking my head. Yep, many thought the offensive doldrums would be over when Votto got back (and always when Edwin gets back), but I doubt it. Four (count 'em) hits? Then again, I doubt the Reds could have won with Arroyo's performance anyway. When the other team scores 5 runs, we're pretty much sunk, and it happens more often than not. Base your team on defense and pitching and you'd better have lights out pitching and defense if you ignore the offensive side of the game and put your faith in AAAA players lilke Jerry Hairston, Jr., Willy Taveras, as well as unproven players like Jay Bruce, Dickerson, and has beens like Alex Gonzalez. Now. we're looking for a bat and after trading half the offense last year (and yes, that's an exaggeration, but not much of one), they look around and wonder why.

Madness, I say. Madness.

Remember that story that said the Jays have no pitching and the Reds are so stacked with starters they could trade them one? Good story.Maybe Cueto can shut them down today. The Jays can score runs and they saw the back of our rotation. The offense has been making bad pitching look good for weeks now.

Blue Jays had some scouting advantage against Arroyo tonight, as told to Welsh.

Reds outsmarted, yet again.

He's going to throw a curve and a fairly flat fastball. Maybe they can tell a grip or something

His repetoire doesn't really require great advanced scouting: it's pretty much, "here it is, hit it" with Arroyo anymore.

The biggest thing with Arroyo was the loss of Volquez. Your stuff looks a little more deceptive when you throw the day after a 94mph fastball. Having him and Owings throw back to back really hurts this team.
