The Oxiclean guy. What the heck is going on with everyone dying?

DEVELOPING: Television pitchman Billy Mays — who built his fame by appearing on commercials and infomercials promoting household products and gadgets — died Sunday, MyFOXTampa.com reports.

I just saw that too as I was watching him on Pitchmen. This has been a crazy week. Billy was only 50 years old. RIP Billy. I'll miss watching your commercials all night long when I can't fall asleep.

Me too. Kind of creepy when you're watching something on TV and then find out the person just died as you're watching their show.

This honestly depresses me more than any of the other recent deaths. Billy was a cult icon in my various circles, especially between my Dad and I. He was damn entertaining.

Happens to the best of us.

All joking aside, he was darn good at what he did, and too young to go. Condolences to his family.

I had a thought of this happening yesterday. Swear on my father's grave.

Maybe it was because everyone was dying and I saw him on t.v., but I was thinking about this yesterday.

Well, obviously Swayze is in bad shape and I read where Walter Cronkite was on his deathbed a few days ago. While we're at it I haven't heard or seen Gene Hackman in awhile. You hate to be morbid about it but you do start guessing who's next after awhile.

I had a friend do the same exact thing. When there was stuff being said about the celebrities dying, a Billy Mays commercial came on TV and he was like "Well what now? Is Billy Mays going to die next?" Kinda creepy.

All kidding aside, Billy was a superb entrepreneur. He made himself who he was and had a very healthy family life. I feel so bad for his family.

His son, Billy Jr, is also on the path to being a pitchman, may see him sooner than he expected.

Some of that stuff he hawked was actually effective. Fifty is to young for anyone.

I was also really into his show on discovery. It really showed a different side of him that was very entertaining. This one really also has me most depressed than the others. He was really just beginning to enjoy the fruits of his life's labors. He glamorized the art of product pitching and seemed to enjoy what he did. I would say Anthony Sullivan is now the best in the biz. Vince is a one hit wonder so far.

The funny thing is most of us make fun of or laugh at what these guys are pitching, but it always sticks, and eventually starts to sound like a good product.

According to IMDB.com, Hackman announced his retirement in 2008. He is 79 years old now.

I don't think Hackman started acting until his late 20s or 30s....

Agreed. My wife and I were big fans of "Pitchmen." Everyday folks had their dreams and life's work realized with the help of Billy and Sully. Every interview I ever read about Billy said that he believed in and used the products he pitched. His style was loud and obnoxious but it got results. I mean, the guy gave OxiClean to his wedding guests!

I heard that Billy's son, Billy III was or is about to become the national pitchman for Taco Bell.

MSNBC is reporting Cocaine use contributed to his death.

update:
Autopsy: Cocaine Contributed To Mays' Death
TAMPA, Fla. -- An autopsy report says cocaine contributed to the death of TV pitchman Billy Mays.

The 50-year bearded TV personality died of a heart attack in his sleep. His wife found him unresponsive June 28 at their condo in Tampa, Fla.

A release from the Hillsborough County medical examiner's office Friday said Mays had last used cocaine days before his death.

The report said that although Mays died from heart disease, cocaine use was a contributing cause of death.

Statement (http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20090807005720&newsLang=en) from his family:

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--"We are extremely disappointed by the press release released by the Hillsborough County medical examiner's office. We believe it contains speculative conclusions that are frankly unnecessary and tend to obscure the conclusion that Billy suffered from chronic, untreated hypertension, which only demonstrates how important it is to regularly monitor one's health. Given the hectic nature and pace of Billy's life, especially during the past 10 months of his exhaustive travel across the country, it was not surprising to hear that hypertension was the cause of his death. We were totally unaware of any non prescription drug usage and are actively considering an independent evaluation of the autopsy results. As those who were close to Billy knew, he had been in chronic pain for more than two years and was about to have his third hip surgery in 18 months. His use of prescription pain medication for his hip condition was guided by his physician and was at recommended usage levels. This has been a very difficult period for our family and we appreciate the respect for our privacy that Billy's many clients, fans and members of the media have extended. We appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers for the family and will not have any immediate comment beyond this statement."

I'm not a medical person, but I do know that when I broke my nose playing softball many years ago, the ER gave me a pain killer that included a tiny trace of cocaine (that's how they put it). It kind of freaked me out rally, but they gave it to me (I think the term he used was "one grain" - it was 29 years ago).

No joke actually.

I like it for a burger press. Put the ground beef in with the little scoop, and then press, and you have 5 patties.

A lot better than I can do by hand, and more economical for parties.

That's really not uncommon in situations like yours. Cocaine is a great vasocontrictor and helps minimize bleeding
