I'll go with a 10-1 rout for the Reds tonight.

With Garland hitting a solo shot? I took my Dad to the Father's Day game against the White Sox when Garland comes to the plate. I told a Sox fan next to me "Watch, this guy will hit a double" After the homerun, turned to the guy and shrugged. "Hey, it wasn't a double"

If Arroyo gets DL'd I would definitely move Massett into the rotation as I think it would be easier for the Reds to give Fisher and Roenicke his innings in the pen. Rather see that than Maloney or Lehr.

Terrible decision by Mark Berry. He has to know that the RF corner is closer in Cincy, Justin Upton and Felipe Lopez both have bazookas, and it's 1 out in the 3rd inning of a 0-0 game with the top of the lineup coming up. Just a brutally poor decision.

Well, the next starter to go out would be the second guy down. It would be better to have another good candidate at AAA. Lehr's pitched well though, as a stopgap he might be ok.

That ain't saying much.

The scouting report on Garland, who is 4-7, with a 5.07 ERA....

Garland has not won since May 19, a span of seven starts. In fairness, there were a few games during that stretch when he pitched well enough to win. His last outing against the Rangers was not one of them. The right-hander allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings in what turned out to be a 9-8, 12-inning loss. His start prior to that, however, was a dandy. He tossed seven shutout innings in that one only to walk away with a no-decision. There has been a significant home/road split for him this year. In eight games at Chase Field, he is 2-4 with a 7.51 ERA while in seven road starts he is 2-3 with a 2.60 ERA

Winnin' ugly.

That's what you get when you emphasize pitching and defense and forsake any semblance of offense. It's what you get when you value the Jerry Hairston, Jr's and Alex Gonzalez's of the world. The theory was to get away from the long ball as a weapon and use small ball to manufacture runs with a team of people who don't know how to do that (hackers do not apply). It works sometimes (like tonight), but when the other team scores 4 or more runs early, we are losers before we begin. It's also interesting to note that we've been searching for a bat since last October and so far all we've got is castoffs and callups from the minors.

Good win, but also lucky. One mistake from the relief corps and we lose again against one of the worst teams in baseball. The sad part is unless moves are made, we're stuck in this mode for the forseeable future. It's boring and you can see the attendance in the game thread to prove it. Same in the attendance at the park. People want to be enterained as well as watching winning baseball. They're winning more, but it just isn't very entertaining for the average fan, and that's the majority of fans.

Hardly.

The pitching is better than I've seen it since the 1970's or the 1990 wire-to-wire team. That said, those teams had offense--players who could hit and do so with consistency. This team, after the great gutting of offensive players has leaned on marginal players to produce runs. Witness Chris Dickerson, who has some potential, sitting on the bench while Willy T plays or bringing up hot hitting minor leaguers and expecting them to produce at MLB levels. And yet, we are at .500 and probably will be for the season unless the offense is addressed. The pitching is wonderful, but scoring runs is important, too. I want the Reds to win and to win you must score runs and not 1-3 runs on three nights and break out for seven the next against bad pitching. It may be a work in progress, but progress is something I cannot see at present. Can you?

Scrap Irony
07-02-2009, 02:51 AM
.500 is better than this club has been for almost ten years now. And, personally, I like winning much more than losing.

Do they have an offense? Dunno. Not all the parts have been there enough to tell. So far, they have enough of one to go 38-38. And that's better than all those supposedly great offensive machines have done for a decade.

Can you?

I agree 100%. I was being sarcastic.

As it was pointed out yesterday in another thread, obviously, it's the pitching on this team that's the problem.:rolleyes:Except that is a complete misrepresentation of what was pointed out in that other thread. Concerns about the short term stability of the rotation and its ability to keep the Reds in contention because of individual issues with the members of that rotation is not saying that "pitching is the problem on this team," so your sarcasm is misplaced.
