And, like normal, Willy T fouls the first pitch off, then flies out weakly to RF. 1 out.

SirFelixCat
07-06-2009, 07:11 PM
JHJ takes an 0-2 pitch, breaks his bat and missed the LF line by about 2.67 inches...foul.

Then a lazy can 'o corn, F-8. 2 down.

SirFelixCat

Votto does what Votto does...single thru the hole on the RH side.

Then Victorino goes yard after falling behind 2-0 on him. 2-0 Phillies. This isn't going well.

Then Utley chases one about a foot inside and low, full count...

Fouls off the next one...

And the next...

And the next...

He gone lookin'.

One out, finally.

SirFelixCat

4 batters and he's yet to throw a first pitch strike. After his last outing, which despite the numbers, was pretty horrible, this isn't boding well for he or the Reds.

3-1 to Howard. He just can't throw a strike w/ any consistency...

W/ the shift on, Howard lines a shot to SS, which is really EdE, 2 outs.

SirFelixCat
07-06-2009, 07:26 PM
Yup, 2-0 count to Werth and obviously George and Chris oblivious to the game itself...just talking about the AS selections etc.

And Werth singles just in front of a diving WillyT, for a single.

If the future is anything like the present, it sucks.

The Reds is dead.

It can be fixed. But it requires two things the Reds don't have -- willingness to spend money and a burning desire to have a top ballclub.

Teams have to think big to win. The Reds think medium.

It's simply awful when you know you're out of the game in the bottom of the first inning. And we are. Game over. Sad.

The Reds really only have one dangerous hitter in their lineup tonight.

Fortunately playing in Philly is like giving a composite bat to a guy who normally has flyball out power.

Teams have to think big to win. The Reds think medium.

The Reds are perfectly content with drawing large crowds 12-15 times a year when the Cubs, Cardinals or Indians are in town or when they give away bobbleheads.

They seem as if they couldn't possibly care less if they actually win.

I don't know, Jocketty's always had cooperative ownership that understood that up-front investments could yield huge returns. Hence his traditional acuity for adding serious gamebreaking talent midseason.

Castellini looks more like Carl Lindner telling Bowden he couldn't bring in Scott Rolen because he needed the money to foment a military coup or something.

Confirmation bias is a powerful thing. It's one game. One guy pitched horribly, one poorly. That's it. It's not evidence of anything else but that. The sky is not falling. The Reds were a mediocre team with an an expected win total in the 74-82 range before this game and they will be afterwards.

Now wait a minute: I've been saying this forever based on the fact that they're not K'ing enough and they're walking too many.

And yes, it doesn't change my prediction of a .500 team (pre-season). Nevertheless, we're seeing some things that were coming home to roost doing so. The pitching was bound to head downwards, and I still contend that the offense will pick up the slack some.

Apocalypse? No. But who cares--same old thin-pitching organization.

Really the Reds could lose tonight 100 to 0 and it's just one loss.

If you thought they were in it or you thought they were out of it before tonight one loss shouldn't really change your view.

Really the Reds could lose tonight 100 to 0 and it's just one loss.

If you thought they were in it or you thought they were out of it before tonight one loss shouldn't really change your view.

Bruce pops everything up and doesn't hit enough homers to justify it. His LD rate is low because he uppercuts everything. He makes good contact, he just needs to adjust his swing.

Incidentally, I kind of further disagree with the it's just one game argument--this is a pretty strong RS/RA punctuation; while before the game it was borderline, this game's going to send that ratio into no-man's land.

It's going to be a difference of -50. I was predicting a .500 season, but now I'm probably going to have to adjust to some new data. .500's probably a pipe dream now without a solid infusion of talent. And that's not going to happen.

I can't blame the coach, don't know what he is telling Bruce, who is working with Bruce, whatever. He is a very young hitter, maybe they don't want to give him too much to think about just yet.

I just think the problem is fairly evident and is clear from any examination of his numbers. It's not just a general failure to hit. It's a fly ball tendency, without enough homers to justify all the flies, and a low LD rate.

He makes good contact, this should be fixable and eventually I'd guess it will be fixed.

It's wise to maintain good habits, if you have any, no matter what the score is, I agree with that. But I suppose when it's off-the-charts awful it's a lot to ask to maintain an equilibrium. The pitcher is just throwing it over the plate, the umpire wants to go home and no amount of small ball or big ball is going to help.

But maybe this game extracted all the runs from the Phillies' bats for a while.

what's the worst all time loss for the Reds?

That was it last night. The 21 run defeat was the worst in franchise history that goes back to the 1880's. The last time they had lost by 20 runs was 1892. Nothing but a complete embarrasment for the whole franchise. We will see how they pickup the pieces from here. But that was probably the season. I hold no illusions now about this team being in the playoffs or being a mild contender from here on out this season. What was the Reds strength, the pitching, has imploded on them the last few days. Starting with the bullpen on Friday night and continuing on with 32 runs in two days. The hitting has been subpar the whole season and couldn't support a team pitch pretty well and so now with pitching dying there's no way the hitting can keep up with that.

Watching the pronouncements of the season being over is quite comical, using everything from Pythagorean to consecutive blowouts to poor offense to franchise embarrassment to Friday's loss as evidence. Is a 22-1 thrashing really indicative of anything? Are consecutive blowouts indicators? Heck, lets throw in that 15-2 Milwaukee loss and you have 47-4 in three games. You can pretty much throw that indicator out for a .500 team with those kind of run differentials in three games, unless you are going to use it later as some kind of self-fulfilling prophecy.

More to the point, no pitching reinforcements on the horizon and the bullpen experiencing a due regression.

It's not rocket science. What I find interesting in the reactions is that when the Reds have a winning blowout game, folks have perspective and don't really make anything of it, knowing that it is just one game. After a blowout loss, pronouncements of doom are commonplace and provides a basis for dire predictions from that point forward. That is rather hard to take seriously.

Sure, the Phillies' offense is very good (though they were horrible against AL pitching). My guess is that Phillies' offense feasted on subpar overrated NL Central pitching. It's not like they stopped at whipping up on Cueto.

Would anyone here lay $100 on the Reds coming within 5 runs of the Phillies tonight?

What I find interesting in the reactions is that when the Reds have a winning blowout game, folks have perspective and don't really make anything of it, knowing that it is just one game. After a blowout loss, pronouncements of doom are commonplace and provides a basis for dire predictions from that point forward. That is rather hard to take seriously.

It's not really a pronouncement of doom. I think that's an overstatement.

I saw a .500 team, but really, considering the injuries and the failure of Bruce to be what was projected pre-season, I should probably adjust that prediction down a bit. Probably a 75 win season or so.

I think that when the facts change, the conclusions should too.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Reds won tonight 2-1 or 3-1.

Just sayin'

Actually an analogy like this is perhaps apt in looking at the long haul, statistically speaking. If the conditions indicate there's a 50% chance of rain and it rains, then perhaps the next time those conditions may indicate there's a 51% (or maybe a 50.6% or whatever) chance of rain the next.

The drubbings over the last two days are troublesome (and including the Milwaukee beating adds fuel to that), but it's still just one game. Interestingly, the last time the Phillies scored this many runs or more was back in 1985 when they smacked around the Expos, I think. The previous day the opposing team held them to three hits. It's a roller coast ride, at times and these things happen (even historical games like last night - for both teams apparently).

This team will experience some bad games, no question. I think we'll still see some gems too. Such things happen in long seasons.

We can look at last night this way. We got to see a bit of history in the sense that last night just doesn't happen very often.

Maybe the Reds will turn a triple play tonight.

Reds are now 10th in the NL in runs allowed.

Don't let my previous comment about Pythagoras taking one to the chin steer you wrong, my feelings on this game are no different than if it was a 2-1 loss. Because it was just that, a single loss. However, beatings like these are an indicator of something greater. As it stands now, the Reds are 4 wins over their Pythagorean win total. Not good...

A week before the All-Star break is no time to panic. The bleeding can stop but the Reds need to establish an inflection point in performance soon if there's hope for October.

The Reds need to have a boat full of talent waiting for them when they return from the AS break. At least one TOR starter, one big time bat, and one guy who can man third.

Anyone remember the Jimmy Haynes start against the Phillies? I left to take a shower, came back, and it was 14-0 Phillies after they had entered the inning in a 0-0 tie. So, tonight was bad. But not THAT bad :). As far as one inning is concerned anyways...

I thought Ryan Dempster started that game.

I understand the diagnostic benefit of Pyth., but I think using it to make a diagnosis immediately following a loss of historic proportions is stretching the application of the principle.
