View Full Version : Bakermetrics: The Thread

Obviously only Dusty has complete knowledge of this rather complex and mystifying subject, but I thought we should have a thread dedicated to its study.

When you see a principle of Bakermetrics in action, you can post it here. Also, some of the generally more accepted principles can be knocked out right off the bat. For instance, one of my favorite BM's is:

"Centerfielder bats leadoff, dude."

Texasdave has also suggested that we round-table suggestions as to who will play Dusty in the movie.

So, SunDeckers, let's have it.

The closer must ONLY be used in save situations, even when he is fresh and the game is 16+ innings

A good way to get inserted into the lineup is to mention to Dusty that you got Hank Aaron's autograph when you were a kid.

No one has suggested any actors who could play Dusty in the movie "Bakermetrics."

I will suggest two:

James Earl Jones. I have no idea why but the idea of JEJ as Dusty just cracks me up.

The second one is actually impossible, but Sammy Davis Jr. as Dusty Baker alone would be worth the price of admission.

I'd go with that rotund dude who always plays a cop. Was in Die Hard, Family Matters, Turner & Hooch, etc. Played Big Mike's brother on Chuck last season too.

Funny you mention him. When my wife first saw Dusty on TV, she said "Is that the "if you build it they will come" guy?"

Mehki Phifer as Corey Patterson
Jeff Goldblum as Paul Bako

There's no problem with putting your pitcher back out there after a long rain delay.

Starting pitchers, no matter how many millions you have invested in them in long-term contracts, can be used as relievers in between their starts.

He's never said that, has he?

He's referring to this quote from Dusty about Willy Taveras:

"His role is he's our center fielder and our leadoff man," Baker said. "The fact that he's so young, he's going to get better. A lot of people talk about his on-base percentage. I like to think in terms of him getting into scoring position." If you're curious, the "so young" Taveras turned 27 last month.

One of my favorite Dusty memories was when the Reds were playing up in Wrigley and Dusty messed up a double switch. LOL. He came flying at the umpire. I thought he was gonna swallow his lucky toothpick.

That is also sad in a way if one of your favorite memories since the turn of the century of the team you follow is of the opposition manager messing up a double switch.

I think I'll have another beer.

On the relative importance of walks for a leadoff man:

"It's really noticeable when your leadoff man isn't hitting," Baker said. If he's not getting walks as non at-bats, the at-bats mount up quicker than anybody else on the team."

What a managerial dilemma! Your CF isn't hitting and he's not even drawing walks to hide the fact that he's not hitting.

Soooo you admit your leadoff guy can't hit OR draw a walk meaning he makes the most outs AND HE IS STILL THE GUY GETTING THE MOST AB'S?!!??

What the hell, Baker has three right handed batters in a row in the middle of the lineup tonight. I thought it was sacrilidge to stack the same side batters together. He wouldn't even put Votto and Bruce back to back.

Incredible, isn't it?

Not an inkling of the value of walks as they relate to OBP.

But instead, simply as a batting average buffer for a hitter in a slump.

But that's to be expected from the genius who gave us this:

"Do you ever see the top 10 walking (rankings)? You see top 10 batting average. A lot of those top 10 do walk, but the name of the game is to hit.”
