Good to see Dickerson still in there.

I have a feeling we either destroy Moyer or he no hits us.

SirFelixCat

Willy T crushes the ball about 130ft deep  and about a mile high.

Shocker, but 1 up, 1 down.

SirFelixCat

CD takes the first pitch the other way just short of the warning track, 2 down.

Votto singles thru the shift (why are they shifting???) just to the 1b side of 2nd base for a single. 2 out, 1 on.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:12 PM
BP working the count...

Takes the 2-1 pitch and pops it a mile high to the catcher in foul ground. That's that

Thru 0-5, 0-0.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:16 PM
Rollins does his best Willy T impression and pops it up a mile high about 45' in down the 3b line. Easy F-5. 1 down.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:17 PM
Shane "My team jammed the ballot box for me" Victorino draws a BB.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:18 PM
Utley lines a single over BP's head and SV goes 1st to 3rd. 1 out, men at the corners.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:21 PM
And....Howard walks.

Loaded for Werth.

Whew...

That could have been ugly.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:24 PM
Werth takes the 2-2 pitch and flies out to RCF...there is a near collision between WT and CD, but CD takes it and uses his howitzer to hold Shane at 3b. 2 outs.

Willy T should always defer to CD imo w/ his lack of an arm.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:25 PM
Dobbs grounds out to Votto for the 3-1 GO.

SirFelixCat

Thru 1 inning, 1 hit apiece

Moyer: 13-9
Owings: 24-12

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:28 PM
All the Reds are trying to kill the ball, popping it up a mile high. Razor Ramon follows suit, but, by the grace of something, it fades into the crowd.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:30 PM
After falling behind 1-2, Razor draws a BB. Nice AB, minus the overswinging part.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:31 PM
Gomes takes the first pitch and loops a single in between 3b and LF. Men at 1 & 2, 0 out for EdE.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:33 PM
EdE takes a reeeeeeeeeal close 2-2 pitch to get the count full....

Then drills it deep!

Off the wall in straight away CF for a triple!

Both runners score and the good guys are up 2-0, w/ EdE on 3b and no outs!

CTA513

EdE takes a reeeeeeeeeal close 2-2 pitch to get the count full....

Just missed hitting a 3 run homer.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:34 PM
Janish, just like most the other Reds, pops up harmlessly...F-6. *sigh* 1 out

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:34 PM
Owings facing Moyer...I like Owings here.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:35 PM
Moyer is not close vs Owings thus far. 2-0 count.

Then swings at one up around his shoulders and misses. I felt the wind from that here in Vegas.

2-1 count...

He drills the next pitch on a rope to LF but EdE tags and scores fairly easily!

3-0 good guys and a great AB by Micah!

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:37 PM
Moyer appeals to 3b and the call...

SAFE! he didn't leave early. The run counts!

(and all of a sudden, I feel like I'm doing pbp in OOTP Baseball. lol)

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:39 PM
Willy T doesn't quite reach the same distance as he did in the 1st inning with his mile-high pop up. This one only goes about 100'. And the black hole continues that is WillyT playing CF and batting leadoff.

But the rest of the team not named Janish helps out and get the good guys a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 2nd!

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:41 PM
Feliz doesn't stay long. 3 pitches and he gone!

1 down.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:42 PM
Ruiz smokes the first pitch on a line to DEEP CF, but Willy T got a great jump on it and catches it on the run over his shoulder!

Nice catch/reaction by WillyT.

2 down!

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:43 PM
Little grounder from Moyer to 2b for a 4-3 ground out.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:48 PM
Votto grounds pretty sharply down the 1B line, but Howard was stationed right on the line and it's an easy 3-1 ground out. Good positioning by Howard there. Else that's an easy double.

2 outs.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:49 PM
BP lifts the first pitch down near the RF corner, but Werth is there and makes the grab. That's it for the Reds in the 3rd.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:52 PM
Rollins takes the 2-1 pitch and grounds out to Votto, unassisted. 1 out.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:53 PM

Stand up inside the park HR by Utley.

Wow...just...wow.

Howard with a double.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 07:58 PM
Utley takes a pitch and drills it off the wall in LCF...about 15+ feet up and Willy T decides to run all the way to the wall, I guess expecting it to hit the wall and fall straight down?!?!

Instead, it, as physics dictates, bounces off the wall and Utley easily w/ an Inside the park HR.

Then Howard torches one into RCF for a double.

There is just no excuse for the idiot positioning by WillyT. You have to know it's going to bounce off the wall, so wtf do you run right up to the wall, time after time? Not the first times he's done it. Just use common sense!

Big Klu
07-09-2009, 07:59 PM
Where was Dickerson?

Coming over to back up the CF like he should, but the ball took a funky bounce off the wall, and bounced directly to RF where Chris would have been if he hadn't done what he was supposed to do.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 08:01 PM
Yes it took a screwy bounce, but Willy has to realize that running all the way to the wall is not the way to play the field. He has to stand a handful of paces away from the wall and play the bounce. I mean, they teach this stuff. I just don't understand his lack of using his head.

Just dumb.

SirFelixCat
07-09-2009, 08:02 PM

Yes, that's it. I suggested Kent Tekulve and she said that was the one they mentioned. Actually Fenton McAuley could sort of sound like Kent Tekulve. But she was thinking of Sullivan and I'm saved.

Manuel wishes he was back at Louisville after that side swipe by EE.

Two under .500 after tonight with Bronson Arroyo pitching tomorrow.

Maybe Walt's "waiting" was wise? I'd hate to have sold off some young talent for some rental property.

Huh, now our son is calling from DC and the first thing my wife asks him is about the side armer we had and he says "Scott Sullivan" and I was mocked. I guess I'll have to pull out Fenton McAuley from time to time.

Gotta love the look on Manuel's mom's face after he got the strike out.

Traderumor...I agree....when I see JR, with his stuff.....nibble with paul Bako and not be able to put that guy away..I just think the crowd and the situation got to him.

I guess Danny cannot have a few bad games...he has to suck, no other way around it.

How is Manuel getting even AAA batters out? He doesn't seem to have anything and he is getting guys out from the back of the bullpen. Not sure what I'm missing, but I don't see anything that makes him a part of the future in the pen.

There's two shutout, no hit, one BB inning from CHAN HO PARK.

From the back, with the haircut and the build, Manuel looks like Danny Graves, the early years.

Rollins robs Hernandez on a soft liner, Bruce hits his nineteenth consecutive nubber off the handle to first. But he did hustle, if anyone wondered.

That would be three scoreless innings from CHAN HO PARK. My "bold" prediction is 3/4 of the way home. :(

Nothing long term....just enough so he does not make his flight out. ;)

Not surprising, like all reds opponents, just before the reds were due into town, their lame and old took Flubber, and are completely rejuvenated and ready to go.

Flubber is not on the list of banned substances. You'll have to rewrite the collective bargaining agreement.

Even worse for the Reds, it's the old school Disney Flubber Fred MacMurray version that opponents are using, not that updated Robin Williams stuff.

Why is Dusty Baker blaming Chris Dickerson for Willy Taveras playing shoddy OF? Is Chris also responsible for Willy's inability to reach 1b?

Because if Dickerson does what he's supposed to do, that's not an inside the park home run. It's more likely just a hard single, at worst a double. It's a team and if it fails to function as a team, then things like this happen. I agree with SirFelix that we've seen enough of Tavaras, but if Chris Dickerson backs it up (as he should), that's just a baserunner with a chance to leave him there. The same is true of Roenicke not hustling. I expect Baker to call those players out. This club does not have the depth that allows for such mistakes. The team can help make up for deficiencies such as Taveras playing a ball incorrectly. It would be nice not to have that in the first place, but if it happens, someone else is supposed to help minimize that mistake. Team effort - as simple as that.

Why is Dusty Baker blaming Chris Dickerson for Willy Taveras playing shoddy OF? Is Chris also responsible for Willy's inability to reach 1b?I agree with Redsmetz, but I want to add that backing up on a play is learned at the Little League level, and my thought was the same as Dusty's as the ball was rolling forever on the warning track: "Where's the RFer on that play."

When you are a major leaguer, being paid six and seven figure incomes for your unique talent, and you enter a visiting ballpark for the first time that year, your butt better be out there surveying the ballpark and picking up on quirks of the park to minimize the home park advantage of knowing nooks and crannies and funny bounces off of fences just like that. The only excuse I have for Dickerson is that he is not accustomed to playing RF anywhere, but that is really a very poor excuse.

The plays that Dusty was upset about were both valid points, regardless of what anyone else did on the play. Just like the RFer is to blame if a guy gets two bases on an overthrow of a bunt. Yea, the guy who made the overthrow is to blame, but the extra base or bases is on whoever is supposed to be backing up.

Of course, it is all hot air from Dusty if he does not reinforce the standard with an organized practice on these types of things this afternoon in New York. If the players are not executing fundamentals, you refresh their memory, no matter what level they are playing.

I'm not sure if the Dickerson failure is something you can practice, but it makes me wondering why this funky wall hasn't been brought to the player's attention prior to this. We have advance scouts. We've played in this park before, etc. But our offensive woes are such that we just can't put ourselves behind the eight ball with shoddy play. I understand no team is ever perfect, but we have little margin for error.

I understand no team is ever perfect, but we have little margin for error. The practice would be focused on where are you supposed to be on any given pitch and ball in play. I wasn't saying they need to practice funny bounces off of walls. But that should be a part of surveying the landscape as you enter a visiting ballpark rather than playing cards or video games in the clubhouse, or standing with legs crossed chewing fingernails in the outfield during BP. Not saying that is what Dickerson's habits are, BTW, because I don't know, but that play indicates that there may not have been appropriate pre-game preparation.
