I smell extra innings today: similar starters, similar offenses, neither team with much depth.

Gosh, this place is dead today.

5 pitches and 2 outs in the third. Ah, Willy T. flies out to short center. No wonder no one cares anymore. I may take a nap but not intentionally. The Reds' offense is the most boring one I've seen in nearly 50 years as a Reds fan.

Speaking of dead, have you seen the Reds' offense lately?

They now haven't scored in about 16 innings.

And Willy is not a terrible outfielder. I was there on Friday night and he made an outstanding diving catch in the first inning. Even if his jumps aren't the best, he covers a great deal of ground.

If he could only hit. If most of them could only hit.

Blitz Dorsey

Taveras is an absolute joke in CF. He thinks he can throw anyone out with that weak arm? How about actually taking the correct angle on a ball over your head for a change too. That might help.

Everyone talks about Taveras' inability to hit -- and they are right. But the guy is completely overrated defensively. He makes boneheaded mistakes all the time.

Just like last night. Nothing hit hard and mistakes made in the field. Boy does this team need an overhaul soon. Even the Mets scrubs made us look like bufoons. I still say the dive is overrated only because of ESPN's "Web Gems" crap.

Now 4-0. Game is probably over. How nice.

jojo
07-12-2009, 02:06 PM
Yikes...sheffield hits a grounder up the middle (which looked like wide expanses), two runs score and Sheff takes second on Taveras flaccid throw home which BTW, had zero chance.

Blitz Dorsey
07-12-2009, 02:06 PM
And if Hernandez knew how to block a ball, Sheffield's hit would have been a 6-4-3.

I feel sorry for Dusty at times. I mean, high school outfielders don't take as bad of angles on balls over their head as Taveras does. There are certain things you should just be able to do as a MLB player.

Mets announcers declare that Tavares made a terrible decision on that single.

I declare they are 100 percent correct. Even a CF with a good arm couldn't have thrown out Wright on that single up the middle, yet "Free Willy" thinks he can? I think the Reds need to start handing out IQ tests before they sign anyone. (Not unlike the Wonderlic in the NFL.)

Dickerson did the same thing last night. Defensively, this outfield on the field today is pretty flaccid. IF we had a shortstop, (and believe me, we don't) two of those grounders through the middle that went for hits might have been at least knocked down, but...we valued Gonzalez and Hairston, two marginal players, more than finding some good players, all the time giveing big money to a closer, a washed up outfielder, and offering arbitration to David
Weathers. Shameful.

So would I, but then you'd have a hole in your rotation and Dusty would still play Taveras somewhere.

The only answer is better players and you have to spend money for that and it's apparent that this franchise will spend more money on less than any in baseball.

I say eat some Double Whoppers and get your velocity at least back in the 90's. No good?

Welke is not a bad ump, and that pitch was close enough to call a strike.

But he broke a Cardinal rule of umpiring. He followed a batter, after the batter had already left the batter's box and was headed to the dugout. He even took off his mask, which makes it worse.

All he had to do was calmly explain why he thought it was a strike and get back to his job. But he felt it was necessary to go out of the umpires box and follow Votto as Votto walked back to the dugout. He was looking for a fight. That is inexcusable. And I am usually the first to back up the ump.

The whole situation was set up for tempers to flare. Reds are frustrated. Their best pitcher is getting bombed, they've lost and lost lately and then the umpire made a call on a pitch. Umpires should realize what kind of situation they are in. Instead of doing what you said, this guy 1. said something to Votto, 2. Took off his mask, and 3. folowed him to the dugout. All no-nos.

One of the best memories of the Reds season thus far is perhaps a trivial one. I was watching the Reds on Houstan's FSN feed while in New Orleans during April (the Reds were in Houstan). Weathers manages to cost us another one!

You could say the same for Josh as well. He just did it more slowly.

Tanning while gardening is always a good way to get both things done with minimal travel time.

Seriously, Willy Taveras is a terrible outfielder.

Willy Taveras is a spinning top in CF.

Not to pile on or anything, but it literally looks as if he has never played the position before this year.

I have to say that I thought Willy Taveras was an answer to a question the Reds had this offseason. I admit I was wrong. Enough pop ups and bad fielding plays like in the first today have tipped the scales. He does not deserve the regular beating that he gets on here because nobody does. But he is not a good baseball player. Bring on the rookies.

I came to this as a final conclusion last night when he failed to pull up short on a blooper into CF where I think we'd have had a chance to at least get the runner at second on a force. It was clear he was not thinking out there. He may a fine friendly guy, but the club made a mistake. I'm like you in that I thought perhaps the club was seeing something they could work with, but he's a huge drag at this point and should find a new home. He's not the sole problem with this club, injuries and all, but he's not part of the solution either.

This one was depressing.

At the ASB, 4.5 games out of first (with four teams ahead of them) and 6.5 games out of the wild card (with 7 teams ahead of them).

Assuming the Cards went .500 over their remaining 72 games, the Reds would need to go 42-33 over their remaining 75 games (i.e. play .560 ball). They'd also have to hope the other teams ahead of them don't surge.

It's looking like a real tough road to victory. Certainly, they could win-it's not impossible. But the division being theirs for the taking is more illusion than reality.

I was wondering Hernandez was at first and Rosales still in. So Rosales moved out to the outfield, Hanigan slid behind the plate? (I was out gardening)

Hanigan came in in the middle of the 8th. In the field Hanigan comes in to catch, Hernandez moved to first and Rosales left the game. Hanigan actually came into the batting order in the pitcher's spot.

I don't understand why Dusty let Rosales bat with two men on in the 8th with Hanigan's bat on the bench and then brought Hanigan if after Mendoza, oops, I mean Rosales strands the runners.

Replay of Vottos ejection from the Mets network:

They have an overhead view around the 1 minute mark that shows the ball was off the plate.
Mets announcers also thought Baker was slow to get out and protect his player from getting ejected.

Those backup pitches are causing problems for the umps. They are not consistently applying "where the ball crosses the plate." Many of these backup pitches, of which Weathers does not get consistently, seem to be moving into the zone AFTER they cross the plate. That pitch was inside, and that had been building for Votto, who has been upset about called strikes in every game of this series.

To me the overhead angle is the definitive answer. Joey was penalized for being a good hitter. I can see why he'd be ticked.

I'm with you guys. I was willing to give him an opportunity, and I'm still not going to pile on, but I have seen enough of Taveras. He reminds me too much of Curtis Goodwin.

Yup, he has a great eye at the plate. That is why when he starts woofing, the umps should listen. It works for Sir Albert ;)

I absolutely agree. I just watched the overhead and was horrified by the call. There is no way a major league umpire should miss that one. Votto should have walked away, but then again it has to be hard to show restraint when you've been rung up twice on questionable pitches.

I, too, love the homerism of the Mets announcers. "It was close enough." Riiiiigggggght.
