Sure, Manny pounded that ball into the dirt got a good bounce, and Gomes butchered the play in left. Homer doesn't seem to get any breaks, just like the fact that either every runner or nearly every runner, he has left on base this season for the bullpen has been allowed to score.

That wasn't really a bad inning by Bailey. Furcal slapped a single. He went 1-2 on Hudson before giving up a solid single. Against Manny he didn't get two close pitches, took him full, and then made a really good pitch that Manny topped and just happened to smack right down the 3B line.

I'm happy with the way he hung and got himself out of the inning.

Rosales fights off a few as Wolf seems concerned about EdE's one stolen base in two attempts this season. On pitch #7, Adam hits a slow curve to right for out number two. Janish up.

Doc. Scott

Janish watches four straight out of the strike zone. Two on, two out for Homer.

Doc. Scott

Loney, the #7 hitter, leads off the bottom of 2. He runs the count to 2-2 without a swing. He punches the fifth offering directly up the middle for a leadoff single.

Kemp, the most dangerous #8 hitter in O.B., steps up.

reds44

Doc. Scott
07-21-2009, 10:56 PM
Homer throws Kemp a fastball down the pipe, then fails to get him to bite on two breaking pitches away as well as another heater. He throws a strike when he needs it to run the count full. Kemp then leaps on a hanging slider and hits it out of the ballpark. #13, 4-1 LA.

O-Dog in the bizzox. Fastball at the letters for strike one. More smoke down Broadway for strike two. Splitter in the dizzirt. Outside fastball is grounded neatly to Janish, who starts the 6-4-3!

Willy T leads off the Reds' 3rd. He takes one of each, then lays off high heat (for once). A "surprise" bunt is fouled off. He then freezes on a curve, strike three called.

Taveras really should give a Berenstain Bears-style series of hitting lessons. "I'm trying to show you what NOT to do!"

Doc. Scott
07-21-2009, 11:07 PM

Man-Ram shlumps into the box to leadoff the Dodger third. He, of course, hit a brisk bouncer into the left-field corner for a two-run triple last time up. He takes a fastball at his shoetops, ball one. Fouls off a letter-high heater (ut-oh). Homer pegs him with a fastball, and Ramirez is taken out of the game and replaced with Juan Pierre! Score!

It's time to give up on Bailey.

That said, I'm sure the no-no's will begin. Reds44 is correct. Anyone can have a better ERA than 8.51. Even Fogg and Belisle. Bring a kid or two up. Start Masset. Do anything, but do not do nothing. I was shocked that Owings will start on Sunday. Why?

For all the ballyhoo about Reds pitching, these two have been an embarassment.

I'll forgive Gomes for his piss-poor outfield play tonight if he can hit just one more homer.

Time to blow it up, but as always, too many bad contracts. Who would want Arroyo, Hairston, Taveras, Gonzalez, and Gomes/Nix? Nobody. Couldn't give Bailey or Owings away. That leaves the tradable as Votto, Ecarnacion, Phillips, and Bruce. That should be the nucleus for the future. It's going to be rough.

Should have padded those AAA stats and dealt him. Oh well.

Aside from a few minor bullpen additions, Walt's next significant accurate evaluation will virtually be his first.

He has a plus defender 370OBP CF and leadoff hitter in house, but he opts to spend $6.5 million to replace him with an erratic defender 290OBP blackhole. He gambles that career year JHJ is the new norm, and loses. Despite a desperate need for both a franchise SS, and a RHH big bopper in LF, he decides to stand pat (or rely upon reclamation projects). He accepts a low velocity, control-challenged Owings to be an acceptable return for a 900+OPS LF like Dunn, then doesn't replace the lost production. He errantly promotes Homer Bailey repeatedly, rather than trying to maximize his trade value at AAA. He fails to move Arroyo, despite Bronson posting 100IP of 3.47 ERA ball in the 2nd half of last year, and reports that teams were inquiring about him...

Welcome to the cycle of the Cincinnati Reds. Dunn and Griffey are gone, so now we'll start the cycle over with a new batch of guys. Eventually a few of the group of Cueto, Volquez, Votto, and Bruce will be gone and we'll find out if the next guys are worth anything. I'm done with the "play the kids" movement. If we get some top prospects like a Bruce, Votto, or Volquez then I'll count on them, and I am sure some of them will bust as well (like Homer). There's only one guy currently in our system who I'll rely on to be a productive major league player, and that is Yonder. If Frazier turns out to be Bill Hall I'll be happy. Draft and develop your guys, but don't count on them to do it all by themselves. Go out and sign some people. Until they do, they will continue to suck.

And for anybody who wants to show me the Rays, I'll show you the Pirates, the Royals, the Orioles, and (sadly) the Reds. If the Reds can somehow take the entire Florida Marlins scouting department then I'll believe we can win like this. Hell, even the Marlins signed Delgado a few years ago.

I'd be interested to see the most expensive free agent signings the Reds have had in the last 8 years. Milton and Cordero are probably the two highest, but who is next? Alex Gonzalez?

I love this team with everything I have, but I have yet to see a winner since I started following them day in and day out, and there is no real sign of that changing. The Reds needed a SS, power bat in LF, and another starting pitcher and they recieved Willy Taveras, Ramon Hernandez, and Micah Owings. If you took a poll on redszone they would have told you to let Dickerson start in CF and Hanigan behind the plate (for the record, I liked the Ramon trade and I still do), and anybody with a brain could have told you Taveras sucks.

Epic fail to you Mr. Joke(r)tty. The fact that redszone is still crying for the days of Pete Mckanin and Wayne Krivsky tells you the said state that Cincinnati baseball is in.

Oh and everybody lay off Brandon Phillips. Dude is the least of our worries. Maybe we can run him out of town too.

When I read on RZ that Homer had turned a corner, I didn't realize that it meant back down Mehring Way to get on I71 south.

Unfortunately he always turns the corner in AAA not at the mlb level. No confidence in his stuff, sad to see.

That kind of defines the season.

Maybe he'll make ESPNs not top 10 of the week?

:D

My internet is intermittent and i don't have the time to get it fixed. My wife is in the hospital since November 08 with leukemia. I have not played my drums (which I do very well) since then and miss it, and my Reds are proving to be the wikipedia definition of suck, lost... or clearly a ship unmanned by people that have their act together.

I have given much thought to my own personal survival through this and have decided to root for the Phillies. (while I live in NYC, and have for thirty or so years, I just can't get inside either of the NY teams) I will follow the Reds faithfully, but I NEED to follow a team like the Phillies right now. I'm still checking in here at least twice per day. I have to say (in light of my decision) that I hope the Phillies don't trade for any Reds' pitchers - but if they do, I do hope they give a whole lot up!

Sorry for the interruption.

There aren't words that can make a difference but just know that many will be rooting for you and your loved ones.....
