Boy that was a sweet swing from Dickerson.

No doubt. I only wish he had been batting leadoff, playing CF, and facing both RHP/LHP from day 1 this year. Having Dickerson's 370OBP on the basepaths ahead of Votto and company adds a whole new dynamic to this offense. It would be interesting to see how different the offense might have been if we had an actual tactician as a manager using a couple of true table setters at the top of the order, instead of Taveras/JHJ.

As an aside, nice hustle demonstrated by Phillips on the ground out.

Yes he did hustle Chip. Perhaps I should have said it was very poor awareness, as he waited over a second to run instead of assuming a pitch 3 feet in front of the plate wouldn't be caught.

He did rip down the line once he got going.

It's as if the Reds are making an instructional video this evening:

101 Ways To Consistenly Suck at Baseball:

#36: Make the 1st out of the inning at the 3rd base by getting thrown out by 8 feet.

#72: Pop up sac bunts 20 feet straight up in the air.

#81: Swing at any pitch that lands six feet in front the plate.

#19: Don't run hard/fast under any circumstances.

Chip R
07-22-2009, 11:31 PM
you mean EE should have listened to his little league coach in 3rd grade to learn that rule? :)

Two things: If you are a RH hitter and you swing the bat, where is your momentum going? Towards 1st or the opposite direction? You swing the bat, your momentum is taking you to your left and you are supposed to sprint to 1st the instant you realize you missed the ball?

Second thing, EE must have thought that was a decent pitch if he swung at it. You really think he realized that was in the dirt when he swung at it?

If he had stood there and waited 2-3 seconds before realizing the pitch got away from Martin or if he had jogged down to 1st like you do when you ground to 2nd, I'd be pretty upset with him. But that's not what happened. As soon as he realized the pitch got away from Martin, he sprinted to 1st. Martin made a hell of a play and EE was unlucky.

It wasn't crazy for JHJ to try and steal third. The eighth hitter could then knock him in with a fly ball. The pitcher's spot was next so I can understand an aggressive try there.

But the Reds' aggressive tries fail so often because of poor execution. It's really becoming intolerable to watch these games. Nothing ever goes right for this team. Bad execution, bad breaks, bad luck, bad ideas, just impossible to watch.

I don't blame Hairston for running, but he didn't have a good jump and it wasn't even close. The execution was poor. It's just becoming hopeless with these guys.

Edwin's got pretty good plate discipline. You really think he is going to swing at something that he realizes is 2 feet in front of the plate? My first question still stands: On strike 3, should everyone automatically sprint to 1st in case the catcher doesn't catch it? The batter's first instinct is, "Oh, crap, I struck out." Then a second or so passes and you realize the catcher didn't field the ball cleanly. So you run to 1st. If you want to kill EE for being a bad defensive 3B or swinging at a bad pitch, that's fair. But killing him for not immediately running to 1st after he swung is ridiculous.

Any batter at any level should know to be running to 1st on a strikeout anywhere near the dirt. Again, I'm not advocating sending him down or sitting him, but his awareness of the situation is indicative of the lack of baseball acumen this team has possessed for 10 years.

And the guy doesn't run again. I can't wait to hear this.

Since we can't define what a streak is, does 7-7 followed by 1-14 define it? It's a total of 8-21 (.381), but there is so much failure and stupidity between the two statistics. That's Edwin.

You're right. Standing there looking cool is a much better move. If any coach teaches you to not run on a dropped strike 3 under ANY circumstance....he's not too smart. You don't pick and choose when you run in those situations. You run like crazy for the 1 in 100 time the catcher can't locate the ball, throws one in the dirt, or chucks one in to right field. True. This script is getting old--from Dusty, from Walt, from Hairston and eveyone else on this team. Here it is 12:25 AM and I'm still up watching this train wreck like there is any chance that the Reds will score any more runs. Masset threw an absolutely STUPID pitch to Manny and erased a pretty good pitching performance. If the Reds were 12 under .500, Taveras and Hairston would start and do little or nothing to contribute to good baseball.

Masset thought he could throw one by Manny, when he should have been thinking how he could fool him. Bad move. As I've been told for a long time, the good players in this game know how to think before they act. Unfortunately, when you only have castoffs on your team, you don't get the most intelligent decisions. There's a reason why Masset was sent to Cincy for Junior--they no longer wanted him in Chicago and we're seeing why. There's a reason why JHJ is with Cincinnati and got no offers other than us over the winter. There's a reason why Willy T. is here. As Ross Perot used to say, "it's simple." Just like the Reds.
